This version is by far the B-E-S-T. The RANGE, CONTROL, MODULATIONS, QUALITY OF THE VOICE, AND EASE--are unmatched. A singer of that time, (1965), had no electronics to rely on to mask errors or enhance the voice---a singer had to have pure talent, which Bobby Hatfield had. And his performance was so powerful, that one could concentrate on the song without being distracted by him gyrating all over the stage.

I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Yes, I'm 65 and I get really tired of people referring to this song as the song from Ghost movie [1990]. Yawn. I saw the 1955 movie "Unchained" and frankly, that was a yawner too lol. The song and this artist existed long before some corporate owned movie and publishing outfit did the movie and pilfered this song through legal means. Bobby re-recorded it for Ghost, I don't blame him, for the money. But the performance here, and on the original recording in 1965, the song stood on it's own merit long before "Ghost" existed. And stood on a much higher plain than "Ghost" or "Unchained." Since MTV, generations have learned to listen to music with their eyes rather than their ears. Sad. You can close your eyes and be taken to a different world and level when listening to this live performance, better than the recording he did. You don't need a video to legitimize this performance. Amazihe ng. in 2003, Bobby hatfield died about 6 miles from my house, in Kalamazoo MI in a hotel. Very sad. He and Bill Medley were going to do a Righteous Brothers show that of course never happened. They need to do a movie on these guys...they were highly ignored, when you have all these biopic movies out on Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and others in the past like Ray Charles and Johnny Cash.

Bobby was flexing his talent here to impress his parents. He was nervous about them liking the performance. He showed the world exactly what he could do in this performance. Those soaring high notes at the end weren't on the original recording. Bobby was a countertenor. Those high notes were in his natural vocal range and not what is considered falsetto. For example Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees had a fantastic falsetto range but his natural chest range was in the 2nd tenor/baritone range. He had to work to make those high notes seem effortless and easy. For Bobby, those high notes were just part of his vocal range with no effort.

Hi, It's me again...Bobby Hatfield (R.I.P.) of The Righteous Brothers had such a smooth voice that I've often said it was smother than "melted butter!!!" The original audio version was used in the movie "Ghost," but in my humble opinion, this live performance was his best because he took this song to another level, especially with how he hit those high notes at the end!!! If my memory serves me correctly, the original audio version doesn't end that way...The Righteous Brothers music is pure, soulful FIRE!!!

Firstly, the original take the Righteous Brothers released in 1965 was excellent. Secondly, it's rare that a brilliant track can be improved upon, and the fact that the same artist Bobby Hatffield did it better than when he recorded it, and on TV in a live performance with one take is just incomprehensible.

Little did they realized their song would be sung by over 1000 recording artist worldwide. Little did they also know that it would become one of the most listen to and performed love songs in music history. Ten years after in (1965) on the NBC 'Andy Williams Show. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers along with the NBC Orchestra. Perform the best (Live) version of 'Unchained Melody' better than any other singer or orchestra before or after. The string section alone was to die for. The music was arranged by Phil Spector.

"The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 73 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century. "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965. Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby's use of "Runs" is brilliant. He is the master of the technique and started the trend. 7 notes just to say the word "I".... Their name came when they did a show in a smaller venue and a black man told them…. You two Brothers are Righteous. They created the sound and set the table that all Soul Music fed from for decades to come. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin’ Feelin‘" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

Bobby still giving us chills after 60 years with those dulcet seductive tones, and he certainly trimmed this version up with all the extra runs, trills and fills, and the crescendo at the end, but kudos should go to the Andy Williams orchestra too, they certainly kept up with him and applied the pressure. Amazing performance by everyone concerned. If I could only listen to one singer for the rest of my life , it'd have to be Bobby.

@@psycheinc-theSLC I always say Bobby was a real life siren, if he'd laid around on rocks singing, ocean going liners would have beached themselves to listen ;) but have you seen the clip from the Andy Williams show just after this? You see another side to the RB, joking about with Andy and Bobby busting his moves, and letting rip on What'd I say? Also listen to some of their early stuff like Justine and Little Latin Lupe Lu, they could rock out as well. I suppose it's because I'm old now, but somehow the music today just doesn't have the appeal that the 60s and 70s music did. When I get to RocknRoll Heaven, I'ma heading straight for Bobby's cloud :D And if he's' not there, I'll be catching up with (the) Sweet for a bit of Action. Thanks for the nice comment and your reaction and happy 2022 x

According to Bill Medley’s Bobby threw up before this bc of stage freight Bobby died of cocaine abuse Bobby could have been a professional baseball player
@rubydazzler2 жыл бұрын
No he didn't, jake, he took cocaine that day to perk himself up for the show, because he had advanced heart disease, the marching powder just finished him off. He was a beautiful, gentle, humble soul, please don't make him out to be a bloody dope fiend!
@vallee31402 жыл бұрын
@@rubydazzler I was upset when I read thats what he died of, according to the report he had other drugs in his system too. Hope maybe the report was wrong. Dont like to think of him taking stuff.
@Aurora-tp3dy2 жыл бұрын
@@vallee3140 You don't have to think of him taking stuff. First, was that trace amount of cocaine actually there? It seems like no one has heard of false positive drug tests. Secondly, the other drugs were his medications for high blood pressure, angina, etc. They were all valid medicines for real health issues. Hope I haven't come off as snarky because I didn't mean to. Anyway, hope this helps.
