For clarification purposes: JK has ARMY tattooed on the back of his hand and that's why in the choreo there's the part where he kisses it as in "he's giving a kiss to ARMY". And even though only he has the tattoo, they all do it as a fix part of the choreography and therefore metaphorically doing the same. For everyone else it's meant to be just a small dance move, but if you know - you know👉🏼👉🏼 Also - I know it's going to sound so weird - but I love the way they bend their backs when they sing "high like the moon" (12:30min) like... I just love the shape. They do it so well, it's so nice. Am I the only one? I just enjoy it so much

I totally see JHope as the "Hype Man" in this song both in his dance and vocal parts - which suits him. PDogg also said this song was a challenge to feature all the members because of how short it is.

Not a professional dancer, just gonna share my opinion as an amature dancer and avid dance lover! I also sometimes think what it is that makes Taehyung an interesting case in all the dance practices for me. I think that for me, he plays the role of the mediator. Jhope, Jimin and Jungkook all had a background in dancing various styles so they had already their own signature aura from their early trainee days. On the other hand RM, Jin and Suga didn't have that much exposure with dance and expression of this kind so, in the beginning mostly, they focused on technique and being is sync with the rest. Taehyung, as someone who could easily learn choreos and who had an ease moving his body to the rhythm, develloped his own style from early on; his moves were never using perfect lines or impecable technique but always had this groove, this interpretation that only he could give! And this didn't pose any threat in their group performances as, in the early days, Jimin Jhope and Jk would be responsible for the 'more challenging stuff'. Maybe in another format, in another group where they would focus on technical performances and a perfect image, his style would not be that much ''accepted''. But, especially nowadays, that as you very well said, everyone feels comfortable and presents their own elements and clearly has fun dancing, I think this uniqueness of Taehyung shines even more and glues, in my opinion, everyone's individual style together! Another reason why I love these boys so much! Everyone has a different colour and somehow everything blends together so well! What a fantastic group of artists! Again, thank you for an amazing video, I really enjoy your work!

SO FUN! Nostalgia! Yes! I had the same feeling of being reminded more of War of Hormone or Danger or 21st Century Girl or any number of other choreos from back in the day. Danger might be too intense. But yeah, having more of the individual groove moments and 'comfortability' seemed to be what made me feel that way. J-Hope fingers down the leg part... when it was first released I literally played that part over and over trying to figure out a way he could do that and make it more effective visually. Like there isn't a problem. It doesn't need to be changed. But it felt like such a cool thing that loses some oomf because of the angle. I couldn't 'solve' it though. Turning sideways more seems like it would be too cheesy or contrived or something. Dunno. Had a similar reaction to you regarding Taehyung. He's kinda just doing his own thing. There are a couple times when he is dancing opposite or with the other maknaes and Jimin/Jungkook tend to match their movement more carefully while Tae doesn't. I can't figure out if that bothers me or if I like it. Both? Neither? Lol. It's very him though. My favorite part in the choreo is the bit with Jin singing and the three maknaes around him doing the swooping knee-knock thing. LOVE. But it's super clear there that JiKook are on the same page and Tae has a different kind of energy for it. Still love that bit regardless. CUTE KITCHEN! It was very nice getting a full shot down to your feet! And I've been on a mental health rollercoaster where I feel productive and great and then become a complete mess and have to check out for a while. I feel ya! Wishing you well on your particular journey!

Riki, thank you as always for an intelligent, enthusiastic analysis. I adore the Butter choreography for the little moments and for how at ease and confident the members are. You can tell they are in the moment and loving being there. I think it also points to the maturity of BTS as dancers. Each one of them knows who they are as dancers and sit in that space so well. There is a swag, a suaveness that comes from experience that just can't be choreographed. In fact, one of my favorite parts of this dance is when they are just traveling forward at the end and there is a sense of gravitas but in such a relaxed way (from playful to sexy depending on the performance). I don't have the words to explain it.

the canon probably messes you up because it only has five beats and they have to get through six members so that's why RM always seems to be offbeat cause he has to share the beat with the person next to him

I really love to see you talking about their dances, because every first time that I watch by my self, my eyes never catches those things, so is amazing to pay attention to everyone particularities. And all off yours dances break downs made me appreciate a lot more tiny things that was hard to see as someone who does not dance at all. One of my favorite parts is when Jungkook plays the guitar and the move fits sooooo perfect, also Jimin's part in the Cooler Remix, that gave me goosebumps. 🇧🇷

First of all I love your videos so much. I am a huge dance enthusiast and an even bigger ARMY so it's just *cheff's kiss. One of the most fun things about your break downs for me is how I usually agree with you, but have very little technical knowledge, so they explain perfectly WHY I like something so much and I love it!!! Also, the fact that you notice and point out the tiny details that make the coreography more nuanced and tied together help me a lot with learning them. Tysm ❤ Second of all, one thing I really noticed and enjoy about this coreo is how (wink) smooth it is. Like, - except for that "know that i got that heat..." part in the chorus and Suga's rap, I guess - every movement is anticipated by something in the previous step. Jin's head at the beginning, Jhope's arm movement pulling the others to join the dance during the dance break, etc. It just makes SO MUCH SENSE with the whole concept. Genious. And I also go absolutely crazy with the boys themselves being so comfortable and fully embodying the coreography, as you pointed out, as a fan it's so warming to see them showing their individualities and it just gives so much more flavour to the whole performance idk. Like, in RM's part at the very end, Taehyung (the king of style as always) bends a bit when everyone it standing straight, and it makes such an interesting diagonal line that makes the whole picture more dynamic and fun and distressed????? Idk. Anyways I've written a lot already dkkdks I just love it so much.

I love the beginning 'smooth like butter, like a criminal undercover' part because they dance the lyrics, they're movements are so smooth and they were actually moving like criminals/robbers. Dunno if I'm making sense lol but I just thought that was a nice touch. I think there's a name for it, lyrical dancing/literal dancing? Dunno but I like it. The whole choreo is like that tbh

As other people have pointed out, this dance is very leg heavy. If you notice there’s barely any shoulder raises and I think that’s cause they were being cognizant of Yoongi’s shoulder. But even though the dance is mostly leg movements it doesn’t feel close to the ground or bottom heavy at all. In my opinion it’s due to the bounciness you mentioned, coupled with the bubbly nature of the song and the happy vibe (especially of jungkook). I agree sooo much that Hobi was underutilized in butter in general. He could have slain the concept but what can you do🤷‍♀️. As for the old school bts vibe I half agree. I see where you’re coming from, its like the movements are sharp and synchronized like danger but instead of that extreme intensity and need to prove themselves, they are completely comfortable in their skin and they way they move. None of the tension, all of the playfulness.

Hey Riki I’m glad you’re back😂💜 uhm don’t have much to add to this circle time except to say I didn’t really love the song when I first heard it but the dance changed my mind ngl...there is something about the rhythms that they chose to dance to throughout the whole thing that made me lose it when I first watched the live. I will say about the end of Hobi’s dance break section that when he does the crotch grab there is this swing in his shoulders that is one of my favorite things in the dance 22:43 ... you talk about how the hip swivel with JK later on changes up the rhythm in a satisfying way but I think the part with Hobi is a really smart small foreshadowing of sorts...like it’s not the same movement made bigger but to me the energy of the two moments is similar...it feels like the energy of Hobi Tae and Jimin swinging their shoulders gets built on so we get a bigger moment when they all swivel their hips....I agree with you that Hobi plays to camera more during performances so I always really look forward to that small parts...I hope all of that makes sense😂 Love the reaction...you managed to look somewhat summery I guess😂😂😂

Hi Riki, This is my first time in Circle Time, yay! I don’t have any knowledge of dance or anything, but I love to watch your take on it and have learned many terms and motives to look out for. Btw love your effort in making a summery buttery outfit and hope you’re doing well mentally. Sorry, I’m a bit late in terms of commenting, but happy BTS 8th anniversary. ^-^ Though this is definitely not my favourite dance of BTS, I do think it suits the song and is similar to Dynamite feel and casualness. I do indeed think they are much more comfortable doing this dance, perhaps due to the lower amount of complexity and more playful aspect of the song. I also really think they did this more easy-going choreography, because of Suga’s shoulder operation and maybe because they are getting older and were a bit out of shape due to lockdown? (But I’m just speculating here.) So, I really like the start. The beginning is very clean and reminded me of the starting position of Fake Love. I also love the head-turn as a foreshadowing of Jungkook popping out the next beat. I especially like the movement they make with their arms, like they are actual smooth criminals creeping around. I like the small section between Taehyung and Jungkook, but on the other hand I find it a bit awkward with the other members just standing there completely still? Perhaps it’s just a tad too long for me to be nice? Idk. The section of Taehyung’s part is just so swag. I noticed the lazy head as you called it as well, yeah I love that laid-back aspect (similar to him pretending to chew gum at moments). I also agree with you that Taehyung is trying out persona’s or playing around during the dance, seeing what works in terms of energy, swag, sexiness and playfulness (for example in throwing his glasses away to the camera). Also, a note on how Jin is just doing so well here in framing Taehyung opposite to J-hope. It looks great and not at all sub-par compared to our dance leader J-hope. I find the “mirror” an interesting choice. It seems more TXT style to me in terms of framing someone, but I don’t know who choreographed it. The canon as you called it, I do like the idea of shooting and throwing their hands up, but it seems a bit messy or rushed to me. Maybe because they are not exactly on beat or the move that RM makes which is at the same time as Taehyung and not entirely clear to me. As for the chorus, I really like the way they use their legs for the sliding. The slower movement really resets the eye and draws the attention for the main event of the chorus. Body rolls and hand-kiss, simply said: I’m a fan. I also really like that Suga is partly in front in this atypical BTS formation in my opinion. It’s just nice to see him more clearly. The “quiet stepping” is also a really unexpected interesting choice to me. I like that they are tip-toeing in as sense, making it light, but I wonder if it’s entirely effective in how it was meant. The move that J-hope made that you pointed out Boogaloo Rolls/Old Man was also memorable to me. (I actually wanted to ask you if that move Jimin did in the Cooler remix had a name, so thanks for that XD) J-hope’s move also works really well with the camera perspective in live performances in revealing Taehyung and Jimin. As for that duo, I love that part and (unlike Black Swan) it really upheld the energy. I think as for the shuffling, you really pointed out to me why their movements felt different to me. They were probably given the same instruction but executed it differently, showing a bit of personal style. I personally like the clean version of Jimin more, my eyes are just drawn to him during this part. It just looks so cool. Then with Jin and Jungkook added, this part of the four of them is another favourite moment of mine. Indeed Jungkook really represents the “bad”-run in the song with his spin. I really like the sweep downward the three of them do especially in line with the lyrics “sweep you up like a robber”. I do notice the same that Taehyung seems more to have his own personal touch, while the combination between Jungkook and Jimin often seems more compatible and in tune with each other. My eyes really are on Jungkook in this part, the way he does the sweep and holds his hands after crossed close to his chest is just so smooth, just ugh, no words. The bit of the heals off the floor really reminds me of their earlier choreographies like Danger and War of hormone. I do find it distracts from Jin a bit, but I noticed that in the live performances they barely show the three in the shot perhaps to counter that. Again the mirror frame and the bullet-canon line, nothing further to add there to my earlier comments, except Jimin’s hairbrush and powerful pop when he shoots the bullet, which is extremely satisfying. On the chorus, I agree with you that I favour Jimin’s bodyroll in this particular case with the way he uses his shoulder in a countermovement to enhance the contrast with the shape of his body. Then on the breakdown, I think you mentioned similar concerns to me like the visibility of the finger movement of J-hope and the small time he got for his solo. Also the frame of the others standing back reminds me of No More Dream and We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2. Love the leg slide, repeating the chorus movement, the air guitar and the slow hip roll they make. Jungkook really has got my attention there, he holds the space so well by the way he drags it out, just a total reset of the fast pace before, again ugh, no words. Love the small double bounces they make, typical framing BTS style - simple yet effective. Suga really has his swag moment here and love that he remains in front for a while. RM’s moment of pointing up and down really reminds me of younger BTS and also underlines the lyrics here. Don’t get me started on the ARMY in the back, it legit made me cry when I saw it in the MV and especially when I realised it was part of the choreography and they’d do it so much more often on stage. The performing in a singular line at the end, which is just also very BTS e.g. DNA, IDOL, Not Today, Boy With Love (or maybe that is just a common thing in K-pop idk?). Again, Taehyung is just having fun here with the shuffling, which I’m here for. With the change of the centre-position, I find it a bit of a missed opportunity the way Jungkook switched to the front by just side-stepping, since all the other position alterations in the dance were very unexpected, smooth and cleverly constructed. Like why couldn’t Jin just stay in front for that singular line or something? Yes, the ending part, I really loved seeing the hyped moment and J-hope in front, the best man for the job. I was a bit disappointed that the MV moment was also the choreography, since I would’ve loved to see him dance more. But I must say, that I really do like the contrast it, along with RM’s similarly casual part, makes with the sharp ending move. Yes, the thumb-swipe reminded me of Blood, Sweat and Tears, but the overall sharp leg movement to the side with RM in front really reminded me of younger BTS like Danger. Sorry, this has become a complete essay, but congrats and thanks if you’ve made it this far. Overall the dance has the feel of Dynamite for me, but more comfortable and casual for BTS themselves with more room for personal style and perhaps less pressure of a full English song, while also referencing BTS older choreographies. It is not my favourite, though certainly not the worst, but works well with the music and has good parts in my opinion. Surprisingly, the chorus is for me the least interesting part of the dance, it feels too similar to Dynamite for me, so I really enjoy the smaller moments during the verses with only a couple members, the beginning and the breakdance. Okay, that was it for me, it became far too long, but I hope you found it interesting. - Joey -

ok firstly, i LOVE the orange slice earrings they are So cute and fun and making me miss summer here in the cold cold south :( about the canon part, i'm not sure if anyone else mentioned it bc i haven't been able to read all the comments, but i noticed that rm has that 'do the boogie like' line that he's moving with, rather than moving with the canon? but bc he's so physically close to the others who are doing the canon, and he kind of prepares for it in advance(?) it ends up smooshing with it in an interesting way (not a negative either just, interesting haha) i'm also so glad you mentioned how Underutilised j-hope is for this Whole Song bc that has been my feeling ever since the song was released (as someone who is definitely biased towards j-hope, i just think he kills this concept and i wish there was Moooooore!! (and as someone who is Also biased towards jungkook it pains me to say that... perhaps he should let j-hope have a longer turn maybe 👀)) this whole concept is just so fun and groovy and funky and it brings me so much joy like, when they said they were doing another english single i wasn't sure if they would be able to top dynamite (or like, if it would just sound like they're just trying to do the same thing again?) but from the composition to the choreo to the mv and the Fashion, everything is just, very well executed i'm so impressed (i only wish the song were longer, as did like, everyone involved, so i don't understand why they didn't just, make it longer......? who cares what the 'market trend' says, can we have songs over 3min again pls 🥺) also i feel like i say this every time you post a video, but thank you for doing what you do, these videos always make me so so so happy, i love seeing your enthusiasm for dance (and learning a thing or two, as someone who has never really learnt dance, but has always been very interested)! i always get so excited when i see you pop up in my notifs (usually around midnight here, so i have to put off watching so i will be able to fall asleep sjkdhf). i hope doing this continues to bring you joy for a very long time, and every video is worth the time between, so never feel bad for spending the time you need to take for yourself 💕

I'm so happy whenever I see a new video from you :) This choreo was an interesting one for me because naievely it looks simpler than some of their other ones, and you can tell that they are so much more relaxed with it. I was curious about whether they deliberately wanted to make something we could all have an easier time dancing along with (especially perhaps as it's one of their english releases so targeting a wider intl audience) but I really appreciate you pointing out how it also lets each member's personality and dance style shine through more too. The canon was a bit confusing to me too but I think it's because they have 5 beats, and 6 people in the line, so you have to do something with two members somewhere in there... (PS. your patreon link in the description seems to 404 at the moment :/ )

Can I just say something about RM in the Butter era? Are we calling it the Butter Era? Anyway, I have been noticing how comfortable he has become in his own body. For a guy who started out with 2 left feet, he can now groove and spin and is ssoooo much more flexible. One thing you didn't mention that is so satisfying for me is when they do the head spinning in the Usher verse. I'm not a dancer so I don't know if that's a dance thing, but it always brings a smile to my face. Yes, I like the way the dance concludes as well. It seems very hiphop, kind of like the opening scene of Mic Drop.

Hi Riki! Hope you’re having a great day💞 As soon as I saw the choreography I wanted to hear your thoughts on it, because it is always interesting to see a new perspective, especially from a dancer. (and I generally like hearing your thoughts, even if I sometimes don’t agree with them, since you explain your reasonings so well) To be honest, I was not quite sure if you would like the choreography because of the subunits, since you mentioned for the last few choreographies that you did not enjoy them that much (cause of various reasons). But after watching your video, I can see why you liked them in butter. The energy didn’t drop for the units and they worked as great transitions for the next part of the choreography. I’m not a dancer myself, so I don’t have much to add on the dance, but I totally agree with you that the energy the members execute is different. They just seem more comfortable (and confident?) in their own skin which is also reflected in their dancing and therefore their energies make the performances more enjoyable? Well, to conclude this mess of a comment, I just want to say that I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the choreography like always and the little bits of information you shared about dancing. Take care💞

So my thoughts! You looked so excited breaking this down, I am glad you really liked it!! The part that you call the cannon and I don't have any reference for what that is but to me when I watch it, it's like the one person is shooting a gun and the others are jumping out of the way but Namjoon either reaches up and grabs the bullet, or like when he made slicing motions with his arms that he was slicing the bullet in half. Maybe I'm crazy? But that is what I see when that happens in the choreo, they often make gun gestures so I guess that is why I see it that way. I can see what you're saying about being nostalgic for older BTS' dances. It is just little things here and there the first one some of it made me think of was Blood, sweat, and tears, like you mentioned but there are just little parts that are like.. just BTS movements, that is the only word I can think to describe? It's the little things that make each person stand out just being on full display, and that reminds me of some of the older stuff, not that they ever lost it, it's just like that they pulled a bit of this and that and it gives this feeling of like older BTS choreo. The small dance break though, it was just.. So awesome. I LOVED seeing Hobi turn to face the camera then Tae and Jimin turn and dance with him. I love that staggered bit of the choreo then how Jeongguk, Namjoon, Yoongi and Jin flip do it as well. I had more I wanted to say but I so forgot and it is very frustrating! I love watching new releases of songs and such because you get to see new sides of them but they always come back to their roots. Which I really like, even if the song is completely different than anything they done before, dance included, it sill feels like it is a BTS song/dance. **Edit* Okay at around the 1 minute mark they do this part where they bend their legs and are on the tips of their toes and they do that move like a couple of times and I just really love that move! Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5vJZJyApLyaqK8 Sorry for the long link I don't know how to make a time stamp link. Also at about 1:57 seconds, they do a sweeping motion with their legs during Yoongi's rap and that is so satisfying to watch. And also when they slide their thumb along their lip and then do kind of a flicking motion, that is also something I found fun to watch. I really hope this makes sense!

Can we just....TALK. ABOUT. THE. HIPS. 'Cause I absolutely died during this song. The song has this sort of "cool kid being silly" vibe to it but then suddenly there's the moments of pure SEXINESS that makes the combination so satisfying. Like I truly don't know how they pull both of those off, but the JK/Suga/Jin/RM air guitar part that transitions into the OT7 slow-mo hip thrust is the perfect example of this cool/silly/sexy energy. Jung "HIPS of MADNESS" Hoseok. It's interesting that you mentioned boogaloo, because j-hope specialized in that form of dance when he was with his hiphop crew growing up. He really shines in Butter, and I can't help but have my eyes drawn to him constantly. Also I'm absolutely O B S E S S E D with the way he "pulls" Taehyung and Jimin in I will never stop yelling about it. Another thing I noticed was how although BTS is maybe less "sharp" and "EXACT. WITH. EVERY. MOVE" like they were in their earlier years, it seems like they have moments where the members' personalities and styles can shine through a bit more. They come together in sync when needed, but members other than just the 3J dance line get more chances to shine. I recently watched a couple of their early dance practices recently and compared it to this one. Jin and Namjoon are just........like the improvement and the way they can *express* themselves in a less-structured way is SO HEARTENING to see. Like more than just executing the dance, it seems like they can have moments of fun, joy, and even improvisation on stage.....and you have no idea how much that makes my heart sing because it can be nerve-wracking to improv with your performances if you aren't confident. Also this dance is interesting because I think it's very foot-heavy due to the fact that Yoongi just had major, major shoulder surgery and months of rehab. Even the arm movements are more limited to using the right side more than the left. Just found that little details interesting and kudos to Yoongi for looking like an absolute boss after going through all of that. Also also, a little part I cherish is when the "to remind me you got it bad" because if you look at Jimin and JK, their head roll is just so perfect and epic and I love it so so much. One thing in Jimin's dance I noticed a lot is that he REALLY emphasizes things with his head/neck to the upmost dramatic effect, and JK matched him perfectly at this part and it was just such a little scrumptious part. Also also also, love the spinning in this dance and the fact that THEY'RE SPINNING CLOCKWISE (except Tae who is ambidexterous, they're all right hand dominant and so counterclockwise spinning would be more natural but they all spin clockwise so well I'm jealous). Ok, I'll stop now. As always love your videos so much and your energy and insight.

Hobi didn't write his part, he just rapped what he was given. Trust me, many people are upset about it too. I wanted more too, but they've all stated in the past that members are given the part they fit best.

Hey! I think this was choreographed by a Japanese dance crew named GANMI. Arata Dance School has an interview with their main guy, but it is all in Japanese

…ahhh! And yes, I felt nostalgic too, during RM’s part at the end because yes, it’s familiar. 😉 I noticed it right away but no one else has mentioned it anywhere, so I thought I was imagining things. But I’m pretty sure it’s a throwback to his part during the beginning of “Not Today”. 😍

You were a bouncy fruit salad today Riki lol. I kinda hate that not many mention the "like a criminal under cover" bit because I love it. I like how they are creeping after JK but when he turns toward them they all look away and act nonchalant. It totally subverts JK's statement of being a criminal undercover because he has so many people tailing him. With the canon maybe the concept of it is making it weird for you. It's a bullet and on each end of it RM is meant to do something. It has changed a few times to him slicing the bullet, catching the bullet, letting it hit him in the heart etc. Some of them have changed what they do during the canon hand/upper body wise because the only really important part I believe is making sure they take the step back to prep for the chorus dance. I agree with you about Taehyung. I think during Dynamite he found times to play around A LOT and I loved seeing all his little differences. So I think he is carrying that along. He has kind of a messy precision and I think that is just his style and I love it. I get you with RM's arms because I love Suga's hands when he raps. It's the old hardcore rap feels when you see those type of moves and their rap is what brought me to BTS in the beginning. This choreo felt very comfortable to me, they all felt in a really good space with this dance. I know they love their hard performances and so do we but just watching them groove and play with the movements felt good. Always fun seeing you Riki!!
