Animal beds can be made from different materials, not just cotton. You have plenty of leather that can be used for that. Mechanoid corpses don't decompose nor do they break down in unroofed areas. Best is to add them to your normal stockpile or make a stockpile specifically for them because they're using a decent chunk of space in your already tiny freezer.

I started a game in far north as well and actually it is easier. Just a tip: you always want to keep inside warmer. Therefore, why the heat output of the refrigerators is pointing outside? build it inside and let the heat disperse through vents to the base, same, as steam geyser. There will be no issues with high temperature, so it's win-win, as well, potential weak points are non existing.

Mini guns are great for people with no shooting skill. The key is they always miss what they are aiming at (so stand still when someone is shooting you with one) but have a random chance to hit anything in the squares around that. Spray and Pray!
