Anna Tomowa-SIntow was the first soprano I ever heard sing this and it is still one of the best, in my opinion. And I love having the lyrics underneath. I've attempted this difficult aria myself (with varying degrees of success it has to be said!!), so having that prompt there is lovely. Thanks for this upload.

I remember watching (and recording on Betamax!) the whole concert. IIRC, she had been singing non-Italian roles at the Met, and prepared this difficult aria to show Levine that she could sing Verdi very well. She then sang Aida at the Met, and other roles too.

Saludos.

Wrong. It's in Bb. The music below it shows the key of Ab. Remember when there are flats, it's always the penultimate flat that determines the key. In this case the Eb refers to the 5th of the chord, the tonic being Ab. Still bring it up a whole step and it is actually sung in Bb. I've never seen it in Ab.

@@cavaliothorson7755 That's not a fair comparison either. What Callas could do in her prime, nobody else has been able to do, including Tamowa-Sintow. And Callas could never produce the classically beautiful sounds that Anna does here. Anna was a wonderful and amazing singer, but Callas was a genius. You can hear the difference just in the way they say Ernani involami. Anna sings it; Callas caresses it and almost whispers it in his ear.

La Tomowa-Sintow oaveva problemi di estensione e tenuta e arrivava al Re tranquillamente. She is struggling to sing Italian with a Russian-Ukrainian type accent! Everyone! Please do yourselves a favor and listen to the version of Leontyne Price singing the same aria! Not even Maria Callas has ever come close to Leontyne in any vocal articulation, or tone quality! Also, listen to Leontyne Price's other concert and operatic work on line, also! She is still alive at 93 years old, living in Maryland with her brother, who is a retired serviceman! He seems to be a wonderful and true and dedicated brother, who looked out for her by welcoming her to move in with him from her former NewYork House that had been deteriorating for many, many years! Long, Happy and Healthy may she Live!

@@shirley9529 Your first post is uneducated, and shows, to point out the least, full ignorance of history, or linguistics, or phonetics. (Sintow, with several slight vocal hurdles here and there, is magnificent in her rendition, and most certainly has _great_ Italian) Also it is rude and I won't stand self-entitled bigotry entering discussions of Opera. Trampling the work of an amazing singer, who gives, at 40+ years, with more than 20 years of career, a great interpretation of virtuosic material, with among others, a beautiful integration of a beautiful, creamy, ringing uppermost register within the rest of the voice. Also, Leontyne Price is possibly the first one who will tell you her own Italian diction is very far from perfect (and I like Price a lot, but you yourself decided to bring her into this) And as it is a public forum, I take your "Begone" and give it back to you, written down on paper and slightly soiled.
