Great Job Jeff, thanks for the detail. I have been planning to get the Ring Pro, but was hesitant because of the additional power unit supplied with it. I have an electronic bell with three different chime units on three floors. After watching you install the new transformer and attach the supplied power unit. I checked my transformer and found a way to attach one wire to the transformer and fish it to a chime unit. Solving my problem of presenting a way to make it work. Never sure until the bell rings and the phone chimes.

None of my nearby Home Depots had a 24V 40VA transformer, but I just ordered one from Amazon with next day delivery. I've had a Door Bell Pro for about a year. My old mechanical bell rarely worked, and the Door Bell Pro just stopped working. I've dropped both of the little security screws and lost them among the landscaping stones next to my door, and I was just waiting for you to drop yours! Also, the transformer can be mounted directly to the hole in the junction box by putting the wires through and tightening the long diagonal screw from the inside of the box to secure it.

What you called the Self-Leveling tool is the conversion plate from the Original Ring to PRO. It covers the holes, as the Pro only needs two screws and they are in the center vs the corners.

Hi Jeff, I am adding this comment so that the safety issue in your video stay’s current. Ideally, you would update the video. The transformer you’re installing in the video CAN BE installed using the knock out where the previous one was located. In fact, it must be as per code. Instead of a lock nut, this particular transformer uses a small bolt as seen at 9:01 - 9:15 to secure the transformer - after the wires are fed through the knockout and the transformer is flush against the device box, tighten the small bolt against the inside of the box. I hope that others will see this comment and the others that have been posted as there is so much wrong with this -- those wires are not rated to be free-aired, should not be unprotected passing through the knockout and an opening that size should never be left exposed.

Jeff, I would put a bead of silicone around the Ring casing since the wiring is just attached to the back. I haven't had a called back water damage for my installations. Other installers have gotten callbacks.

The back plate would not fit where the old doorbell was. I just used caulking to fill in the holes and caulked over the wires after tucking them in.

I just wanted to say very detailed information. Like you I research Ring Pro like you before I purchased 18 months ago. I knew I had to replace my doorbell transformer which I knew was not a 16 24 transformer. I never heard of a Edwards, but bought the HeathZenith transformer. So far it has worked well, but I have to wonder if Edwards is better? I do see Amazon sells Edwards, but no problems with the Heathzenith to date 2/10/19. I am only 5:15 into your video, but I give you 5 out of 5 stars for being so interesting. Good job feeding wires on angle for doorbell. The only thing you didn't cover was pairing to app by pressing setup button on doorbell before placing cover on. I like Ring products and occasionally refresh my memory on install and operation. My three Ring cameras, doorbell, floodlight and spotlight are over a year old now and I needed to press setup button on all. I think with new Ring products including in house security, you just scan units now. I have been playing with idea of buying Ring in house security. I don't know if you ever saw him, but I also watch LIFEHACKSTER on KZbin and he reviews all Ring cameras, plus other things. He's very informative too on his reviews.

I suggest you measure the voltage before going to the effort of changing the transformer. It's simple. Measure the voltage at the doorbell switch wires. It must be 16-24VAC, which is correct. If less, The Ring won't work reliably. Yes, replace it with a 24VAC transformer. Ring does make a "Plug in Adapter" transformer for US 110v power only, just another transformer option.

Thank you Jeff for this video. I’ve just installed the Ring Doorbell Pro and new transformer, but I only used a 16v - 30VA transformer. Seems to work great for last week now. I initially wanted to go higher with a 24V - 40VA transformer, but heard going too high may damage the doorbell. Is that not accurate? And is there any noticeable advantages going higher (e.g. faster/clearer live video feed)? My live feeds loads in about 3-5 seconds and pretty clear - which I assume is normal. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hi Jeff You certainly have some scary wiring in Canada compared to the UK by the way. I bought one of these to increase the security around our home, it does work well, I would advise going on the ring website as there are some small software issues for fine tuning the cam. I bought a plug in Transformer as I have a socket (Electrical outlet) near the front door (from Amazon) Christmas greetings

Jeff your no electrician and you screwed this one big time. The 2 black wires you ran in the open air thru the old knockout hole in the fixture box in the basement, carry the 120 volt power to the transformer and CANNOT EVER be run like that under any electrical code anywhere for safety sake. That's why they make this type doorbell step down transformer with the threaded nipple attachment like you removed so all the 120 volt wiring would be contained inside the fixture box. What you have demonstrated is very dangerous because of the possible wire chaffing against the raw metal knockout hole and the shorting and electrocution hazard that creates.

@bobrub Must be some code issue up there in Canada, I not only see that none of the NM (non-metallic sheathed) wire has plastic clamps at the metal box knock-outs, but it also looks like insulated staples were not used to secure the NM wiring to the framing.

You definitely need a knockout grommet to run those wires through but I do agree that having exposed 120v wires is a no no. Just get a different transformer they are pretty inexpensive.

The main concern for me and what's keeping me from buying one is that because of its location, pretty much anyone can do something to blind the camera by covering up the lens with tape, or smear it with something. I wonder if this is a problem?

I guess is someone is there to do something wrong they could do that but camera are everywhere now. Most likely if someone is there they won't even waste their time blocking the camera they will just do whatever bad they are trying to do. In the end I think having is better than not having. That's the way I look at it.

Hi did you know you didn't install the transformer correctly. You can't mount it to the wood beam it get hot. And could cause a fire. The correct way is to still connect it to the box. How you do it by putting the piece of metal that is sticking out next to the wires into the box with wires. After the you put one screw into the piece of that came with the transformer. And tighten the screw. It'll lock the transformer to the box correctly. After that connect the wires.

Love to move the Ring to the brick front but it leaves wires exposed from entrance into brick, an easy clip for bad guys an unsightly as well. Jeff never shows us what he did to address the problem at the close of this video. Please advise.

You should be able to do so on the app but if you are having an issue with that you might have to call Ring Support and have them clear the Mac ID # from the system and start new with a new scan or set up!

Jeff one more question... my current doorbell looks like it’s using a thin “Telephone cable” wire. There’s like 4 thin very flimsy cable encased in a larger cable and it uses 2 of those 4 cables... would those be ok with the upgraded power adapter you’ve shown in your video?

Yeah that sounds like they used telephone wire or something like that. The good news is that the door bell runs on low voltage so you would be ok to use the existing wires there with an upgraded transformer.

Thanks for watching! Depending on how much voltage amps your doorbell transformer is putting out now it may work or you may need to change. Everything would be the same only that your transformers input would be either dual or it would have to be 220-240 volts with the same output needed to run the ring doorbell. I can see some of them on amazon even if you click my link you can type in the search the proper voltage transformer. If you can't find one let me know I will find a link for you.

I would like to ask you one question if it is possible. I saw your KZbin video about ring alarm system. I want to ask if this system can be connected with wired sensors. I am asking that because I already have an old security system in my house and I have already installed sensors motion detectors etc. thank you in advance

Thanks Jeff. I just replaced my transformer, which is attached to a smoke detector. Now I am not getting AC to the smoke detector and am not sure why. Black to black, white to white and green to ground. The rest of the smoke detectors are working but not the one with the transformer. I noticed the old transformer has an additional black wire coming out of it which was attached to the white wiring...not sure why. Suggestions anyone?

I'm having an issue with the wires being stuffed behind the door jam. Guys who installed the door put the wires behind it. Also I have the same issue with the doorbell being too wide to fit it in between the door and the brick.

As long as you can access those wires you can always extend them to where you are installing the unit. You might have to drill like I did to extend the unit if its possible.

Quetion i put another transformer but i don't remember the voltage i charged my rig door bell but as soon as i connected the door bell it last like 30 seconds and then it dies does that mean i have the wrong transformer?

Hey Jeff. How do I wire the doorbell chime to the newly installed transformer? Your video was obvious when it came to wiring the transformer to the Ring Doorbell. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Otherwise great video.

+Quint Yates your door bell is it mechanical or digital. Thats 1 thing i forgot to go over in the video.

Just a heads up people: if you do not have an existing chime, you will need a resistor inbetween the ring device and the transformer.

Does the doorbell need to be at eye level or can it be lower and still capture a face in video?

Nope, you can install the doorbell higher or lower as you need it. The range of view is excellent it really captures a wide view so you won't have to worry about that.

I'm getting a reading of 37 Volts at the door, when pressing the button I get 18 Volts....will this setup work with the ring pro???

That sounds like you have lots of power going to the door you should be fine!

If you already have a transformer you don’t need to shut anything off. A doorbell is a max 24 volts. That’s nothing. Didn’t shut mine off when I installed. If you have to install the transformer then definitely shut the breaker to wherever you’re installing.
