In Fellowship of the Ring, Sean Bean has about 25 minutes of screen time. In that time, Boromir is initially established as a dutiful servant of Gondor, a battle weary warrior fed up with the lords of the lands kept safe by his people, a doubter of Aragorn, and someone with honorable desires upon The Ring. He's dismissive, weathered, prickly, and even a bit defeatist when the scale of the task is laid before the group. He's then shown teaching Merri and Pippin to fight, through encouragement and light-hearted instruction. He's horrified when he accidentally hurts Pippin, because his intention is to teach not humiliate or discourage them. So he's absolutely joyous when the hobbits gang up, shrug it off, and tackle him in good humour. This tells us a lot about Boromir as a person without needing to lean on dialogue-heavy explanations. Heck, it isn't even the main focus of the scene, but it's there, happening nicely in the background, laying the groundwork for his and the hobbits' characters. It shows us, gently, that even though he's doubtful about their mission, Boromir takes the initiative and recognises where his party needs to level up, and does it without making them feel small. He builds bonds that he knows will make the group stronger. Bear this moment in mind when you consider Galadriel's scene in RoP, where she, as the superior swords person, is tasked with instructing the Numenorean recruits and what her actions tell us about her character. Anyway, Boromir falls deeper under the influence of the Ring, but the film also shows him standing his ground and being brave against the Moria hordes and at every turn when the group need him. When the Fellowship is fleeing the Balrog and the staircase is collapsing, he instinctively grabs Merri and Pippin and, without a word, he leaps them both to safety, again establishing his big brother relationship with them. It's such a small detail but it's so consistent as it quietly builds his bond with those hobbits in particular and it's especially interesting to see him do it after Legolas, and even Gandalf, have jumped alone. All shown to you through small details and interactions that involve very little dialogue. All action. All intent. All with purpose and meaning. After Gandalf falls, Boromir pleads with Aragorn for more time just to let the hobbits grieve. He's compassionate, emotional, and caring. He is miles away from the dismissive, prickly presence he was at the Council of Elrond. He's truly a part of this Fellowship now, and he has a bond with the hobbits that goes beyond duty. It shows Boromir, while a good leader, also maybe thinks with his heart when he should think with his head, whereas Aragorn is more pragmatic and, in a way, ruthless. Both display different sorts of strength, but the situation calls for one over the other. And while Boromir protests, he doesn't argue further once Aragorn has made his reasoning clear. THAT also tells us a lot about both men. Boromir is revealed to be an incredibly layered human being, one who is brave, loyal, caring, passionate and patriotic, but the burden of his father's failing rule and the pressure of protecting his people is crushing him. Haunting him. That is on full display at the Council, during his first temptation on the mountainside, and when he breaks down after Galadriel looks right into his soul and shakes him to his core. And it's that very thing, that incredibly noble desire to see darkness and ruin expelled from Gondor that is his undoing. That desire is the ring's way in. He finally falls to temptation and this one moment of weakness almost destroys him, but rather than wallow in his failings, he rallies. He does all he can do to repent, and rescues Merri and Pippin in a desperate attempt to regain who he was. And he is struck down. His first words to Aragorn while he lies dying are to alert him that the Uruks have Merri and Pippin. His second statement is his confession that he tried to take the ring. He is broken, dying, and guilt-ridden, but still trying to protect the hobbits and act with honor. Then before he dies, in his last breath, he accepts Aragorn as his king and makes sure Aragorn knows it. Because Boromir has only ever wanted one thing - the strength to defend his people. And now, he sees that strength might exist in Aragorn, and he knows saying the words will help make Aragorn a stronger leader going forward. He now has hope even in his darkest moment, when he began the story defeatist, bitter, and hopeless. Boromir does all he can until the end, despite his flaws and failures. He's no longer the dismissive and doubtful captain of Gondor, but a man who calls Aragorn his brother, his captain, and the king he trusts to bring glory back to his people. It's a breath-taking moment. Resonant. Earnest. Earned. They accomplish all that, that entire emotional journey, that rise, fall, and rise again for his character, in 25 minutes of screen time. Now look at RoP. Galadriel is exactly the same callous, single-minded, revenge-driven asshole at the end of the series as she was in ep1. Actually, no. She's worse. Because now, she has actually discovered who the enemy is and smoked out his intentions... and chooses to tell no one. All to protect her own reputation. All so she can maintain an air of authority and superiority over her peers, because if they knew the truth, her name would be mud, and she'd be nowhere near the decisions taken to forge the rings, how many there'd be, and who'd get to bear them. She shouldn't be like this. I don't think they meant for her to be like this. Her character writing feels shallow, rushed, and poorly thought out and now, there's a big disconnect between how the audiences feels about her and what the writers intended. She tells other characters to be humble, while she's brash, condescending, and arrogant. She tells others not to pursue vengeance when that's all she cares about pursuing. She talks about the importance of saving lives in the Southlands, but she's never shown saving a single person. She's shown threatening to torture and murder Adar's orcs if she doesn't get her way and she's shown walking away from the volcano blast when others are screaming around her, begging for help. Then the showrunners assert that if you don't find yourself liking her, or find yourself uninterested in her character, it's your fault. You're the problem. She's not like Boromir. Not written like him. Not developed like him. Not treated with the same care, thought, and humanity his character was treated with. She's a statue, standing still in spiteful, vengeful self-righteous self-service. Just like she was at the beginning of the series. Nine hours ago. With over THREE hours of screen time just for her where her character barely moves at all, and the actress is given nearly nothing to do in terms of range, humanity, or even basic heroism. This issue isn't unique to Galadriel. In fact, no characters in RoP have changed or grown or shown any depth at all throughout this first season. How could they? We know so little about most of them to begin with, never mind how they might have transformed or grown, that they come off as one-dimensional NPCs who exist to move the plot along, who make baffling decisions because the story has to happen, with no agency or impetus to their actions. Except maybe Durin, I'll give them Durin. He does seem to go through something of a journey with his father, Disa, and his place in the kingdom... and then his storyline is ignored in the finale. And then of course, there's the bloody bad guy. Sauron gets more development and "growth" than Galadriel, Elendil, or Isildur. That's... wow. Some of the actors are trying their hearts out and their natural talent and charm helps elevate the material, but the writing itself is a anchor around their necks. In a world and with characters created by JRR Tolkien, the characters are being failed at every turn, and so is the story. That's criminal. That's a fucking criminal excuse for storytelling when a prestige franchise is in your hands.

In Chapter 1 of Book VI of _The Lord of the Rings_ Sam asks Frodo, “Don’t orcs eat, and don’t they drink? Or do they just live on foul air and poison?” Frodo replies, “No, they eat and drink, Sam. The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own. I don’t think it gave life to the orcs, it only ruined them and twisted them; and if they are to live at all, they have to live like other living creatures. Foul waters and foul meats they’ll take, if they can get no better, but not poison. They’ve fed me, and so I’m better off than you. There must be food and water somewhere in this place.

Sauron was basically the only likable character in this story thanks to Amazon, he wanted to live a peaceful life and mend the damage he did as the Dark Lord but thanks to Galadriel constantly using him and then rejecting him; he’s going to go back to the old ways and try to conquer Middle Earth once more. Then again if he does manage to put the Harfoots on the endangered species list, he would have unironically done more good for that world than Galadriel did throughout the entire season.

The ring forging scene almost killed me. They didn't even need to melt her dagger, and she gave it up immediately lmao. And they didn't even remove the steel blade! They could have just taken like 1 inch off the end of the butt and used that. They didn't need like 5 pounds of gold and silver to add a few grams of Mithril. And they just melted it all together, and somehow made 3 rings that are clearly made of different metals... They wasted like 99.98% of the total metal. And they call that forging. No songs of power, no spells, no chants, they literally just made rings and that's it. They clearly had enough mithril to just make three mithril rings lol. They didn't even consult a high school level jewelry shop teacher before making this....

And let's not forget how woefully horrendous the gemstones look. They didn't even cut them to fit each ring, nor have purpose-made facets carved in them. When they placed Nenya next to the other two, I almost laughed as it was like a Jewellers ad in the style of Burger King. Furthermore, the idea that they needed Mithril was bogus. That resource should've been aplenty because of the good relationship Celebrimbor had with the Dwarves. They made the rings not because the Elves were dying or fading, but because their realms were diminishing due to the marring of Arda after the wars of the 1st Age. It would've been far more compelling to see the elves making rings to solve all their concerns and sate their desires and build the tension that this may be a terrible hubris they are delving in. This whole season should've just been set in Eregion and Khazad-dun.

@rafaelsousa9447
@rafaelsousa9447 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that scene was pretty dumb. Rewatching the scene, if you stretch your imagination a lot, Halbrand suggests using the right alloy to amplify the powers of mithril, something Celebrimbor hadn't considered because he assumed mixing the metals would dilute its power. If you look at it this way, Celebrimbor doesn't come out as dumb. Still, this is a lot of gymnastics we as the viewers need to make in order for this making a minimum sense. In any case, independently of Celebrimbor knowing what an alloy is, Halbrand explains what an alloy is. Why? Because the writers believe the viewers are so dumb that they need to be explained. I guess it's the right move, because only dumb people can view this show non-ironically.

But they say in the beginning of The Fellowship that he returns to the Shire, it's been 30 years or something, while Frodo is just living his life and Gandalf is out hunting for the truth of the Ring, that he "looks a little bit greyer, a little more bent, but the same Gandalf" or something like that. I remarked on it because I was thinking it's kind of weird that he would age visibly at all if he is really as old as he's supposed to be. I don't think it says anywhere that he has always looked like an old man either, just that he is very old.

This is one scenario in which the writers actually do have some grounding in the lore. Saruman, when he initially arrived in Middle Earth, originally had black hair. By the time of the Fellowship of the Ring it had grown white, except for some black remnants around his mustache and lips.

One more part of established lore that the rings of power writers completly ignored is this: In the source material sauron did approach the elves of eregion under the name of "Annatar" which roughly translates to "Master of gifts" and he brought many gifts. Especially gifts of knowledge. Celebrimbor at the time was the master of goldsmiths and he was esepcially thirsty for knowledge and skill seeking to rival even his grandfather Feanor in his craft. Feanor as a sidenote was maybe the most gifted elve in the entire history of the world, the creator of both the Palantiri and the silmarill. Sauron lived in eregion for almost 300 years before he approached them about forging the rings of power. And when he did he did as a respected teacher, a skilled craftsman and a benefactor to the elves of eregion. And so the elves forged the rings of power under saurons instructions and with his help. However, the three rings of the elves were forged by Celebrimbor alone and while sauron knew of their existance, he never even saw them once and that's how they were kept pure of Saurons influence.

@justforever96

I mean at least that's a useful thing. If you have firehoses that need drying and a pyramid, I guess you might as well use it. Although it's really not ideal for the task. Kind of a weird smile you came to with there, is that like a regional saying where you come from? Firehoses are important, and they do need to be dried however, and you can do it with a pyramid. This is like being given the Mona Lisa and scrawling some graffiti all over it and claiming you updated it for the modern world. Although fortunately they didn't get the actual painting, they can't actually ruin Tolkien until they start literally chopping his work up and "updating" it, and even then the originals will still exist. You can ignore the rest, it's not the real thing, it's a cheap counterfeit, nothing to worry about.

Its why prequels are an inherently bad idea imo. How the hell do you give the impression that characters you know for a fact are alive and well later on are in any danger at all? Its as stupid as the prophecy genre (looking at you specifically, Mr Eddings) where the writing skill appears to be entirely based around plausibly getting the indestructible hero-on-the-way-to-godhood out of the impossible scrape youve written them into. That said, Patrick Tilley's _The Amtrak Wars_ is awesome and should totally be on the shortlist for a TV show.
@Kali-bs7oj
@Kali-bs7oj 2 жыл бұрын
@@elLooto they’re not inherently bad, you just have to be a good writer. I realized this after watching better call Saul. You gotta focus on character writing, and showing how a character became who they are, not on “oh my god they might die !!”
@elLooto
@elLooto 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kali-bs7oj Its not just death, its that any failure cannot lead to a catastrophic consequence. Saul cannot screw up so badly he loses his license to practice law, for example, so we know that when hes doing his usual dodgy shit he must, ultimately, get away with it; no real danger, since he must still be practicing law when Walter encounters him in Breaking Bad. While Sauls story is an amusing collection of anecdotes and good light entertainment as a result, nothing of consequence can happen. Its a ridiculously fine line between a failure so bad that it makes the character sit up and take notice enough to change their ways while still being plausibly recoverable and a shattering defeat. In RoP there is no way in hell Guyladriel has enough introspection, is way to self-righteous and pig-headed to make writing this outcome possible. This isnt true in an original series; see The Walking Dead, which killed characters continually, and even main characters are not immune (Glenns exit was masterfully executed [please excuse both the pun and the spoiler], given his end in the comics, or Andrea and Carl who both had, when compared to the comics, premature exits). The characters maintain a plausible level of danger, even though its based on a body of work years more advanced than the show. This 'lack of real danger' is even exploited by Patrick Tilley in his book series _The Amtrak Wars_ to make character exits much more shocking and impactful, although there he was writing a prophecy epic and not a prequel the same question of 'how much real danger are the characters actually in' still applies and the treatment Tilley gives it shows he was very aware of the problem.

The funniest part was in an interview after this aired, the showrunners basically admitted that they fucked up but it wasn't in a humbling apologetic manner. Instead they came off more as abusive ex's. They lied and attacked us fans for months but eventually it became clear that everyone saw them for what they were, and you just know that Bezos came in and kicked their asses because the numbers were nowhere near what he wanted or needed. So now they are coming out and saying "We'll do better in Season 2. It's gonna be more faithful to the canon and lore. Dude seriously please trust us. We're gonna give you what you wanted this time for sure. Please keep watching. We can change". But we all already know that's more lies. There is no fixing this trash outside of a complete redo. But more than that, this is Modern Hollywood we're talking about and given how gleeful they have been to attack fans up until now, there is no way they're legitimately going to improve. They of course do not feel like they did anything wrong so you just know they're gonna double down out of spite because they feel like it was WE who were in the wrong to not fully embrace this travesty. Furthermore, I suspect part of the reason they aren't gonna have season 2 come out for another year or so is because they are waiting for the heat to die down. They're gonna try using the Masters of the Universe strategy and wait for apathy and indifference to truly set in. Season 2 will likely have better audience scores than season 1, but not because it was actually better. Instead it'll be like I mentioned with Kevin Smith's Teela show when part 2 came out. The reason for the relatively higher ratings is because no one bothered to watch it. The only ones who did were the small minority that 'liked" the first part as real fans have had enough and refuse to waste more of their time in the hopes it actually does improve. Then because the ratings are relatively better, Amazon will use that as proof the show is getting better and more people are warming up to it. Mark my words, this IS their strategy now. There's zero doubt in my mind because this ain't going to get better unless Amazon fires the current showrunners and brings someone on who can try to at least salvage the damage. Do not let up. Do not relent. Make sure that until either they get through all 5 seasons or they reluctantly cancel it, we cannot let them use this strategy to win. Keep letting them know what we think of them and make them hurt. We know that they've admitted they'll do anything to keep this from being seen as a failure so we need to ensure that everyone knows for a fact that it is indeed a failure and no amount of spin can change that,

Galadriel is like watching a bully in high school getting slapped on the wrist for beating up people and generally being an obnoxious asshole. And then getting rewarded with a new car, an early scholarship to the career of their dreams because their parents were made out of money, and you still being told by the high school counselor to just forgive and forget and that “they’ll learn the lesson eventually.”

England continues to amaze. Your entire country is about the size of 1 1/2 average US states, yet you have so many dialects and accents that you can tell almost what street one grew up on by their accent. Yes, we have different regional accents in the US, but it's on a larger scale, over hundreds of miles, usually. Just something I've always noticed but never voiced before. I really did expect Halbrand to be a good guy in the end because of how obvious he was supposed to be Sauron. I just thought, "There is no way that is going to actually be 'the twist'. People picked up on it right away. They had to have written it that way to make you think he's Sauron but then someone else actually will be. One of the Harfoots for instance." I actually did think that Gandalf might have ended up being Sauron and that would've been a decent twist. Instead, everything happened exactly as everyone expected it did... But the writers actually thought it was going to be some big reveal... Which is sad.

The whole thing is to make her look like some Jeanne d'Arc. But in the LOTR books and movies she was a shy druidess healer type in a deep forest. The comical part is that even the ultraf..minist obviousness of the script is no-where looking cool or natural. But I mean what will you expect from having a bunch of rich-suburb DemoBrat party types writing the script and doing the coreography. But there isn't so much about it being worse than Jackson's first cinema version of The fellowship, looking like a trailer teaser happening to be longer in duration that a typical one.
