There's something so freaking cool about actually seeing Sauron - who was so shrouded in mystery in the movies - on screen being played by such a brilliant actor. The mix of supreme arrogance, cunning, rage, and even sadness and regret - sometimes displayed within seconds of each other - must be so difficult to blend together, but Charlie Vickers just kills it in every scene. In particular, I love how he pulls off Sauron's insane displays of power without seeming goofy or unrealistic while doing it. Also, I thought Sauron's response when the orc asked if he is Sauron was really telling. The way he says it - blankly, not even looking at him - is almost like an automatic, or subconscious coping mechanism. We've only seen him use that name a few times, and even then, in each case he uses the third person, not actually claiming the name for himself. Since Sauron literally translates to "the abhorred", it makes sense that his warped savior complex would lead him to reject it. Anyway, psychoanalysis over, loved the reaction!

I see Sauron's crying as a reflection that, as powerful as he is, he is truly alone. The only two people he has ever admired have rejected him, and it pains him to tears. The fact that he says the line "I have many names" at the end sounds different. The previous times he said it as an act of superiority. This time he says it as if It were a burden to him.

I actually liked this better than HOTDs season 2 finale. What they did to Alicent Hightowers character was a disgrace. I think Sauron still actually has a soft spot for Galadriel and while he definitely doesnt love her, he is definitely fascinated by her. Love your reactions Catherine!

"I am their creator. I AM THEIR MASTER!" "No. You are their prisoner." - dang, after the opening with king Durin and the Balrog I didn't think I could cry more, but Celebrimbor´s strength freaking broke me 😭 (and yes, Sauron´s tears were genuine) Also, seeing at the end Galadriel dressed in simple white, marking her first step of becoming the White Lady of Lotlorien was just perfect.

Thanks so much for all your reviews and positivity Cat! So glad to see the transformation in the comments and to see so many more enjoying it this season (felt we were pretty alone last season! “) PS - apparently the Sauron crying wasn’t scripted but was Charlie Vickers’ natural reaction. How many hands up for the old King Durin? 👏👏👏 Brave. Sacrifice and Honour 🔝🔝🔝 Admire it, to take face to face with Balrog without fear and aim perfectly with his axe at the Balrog's flaming sword and hit the target heart! AMAZING! ❤ Let's not forget about another character (who I really liked). Applause must also be given to Adar who, despite all, he is not so bad... Indeed in the end he comes to his mindness to help and take the side of the good. Yes Adar was a really pleasent surprise! Too bad and sad that they are betrayed and murdered him (and so brutally) he absolutely not deserved this. Even just before he dies, his last loving thought goes to his Uruks, even though they betrayed him 😢 Making them understand their mistake and that they do not know what they have just done by siding with Sauron. Damned Sauron! Thanks again Catherine 😊

Love all these points! Particularly your notes on Adar still loving his children even as they’re literally stabbing him to death - I imagine any heartbreak he might’ve felt in that moment was at the thought of them becoming servants to Sauron rather than the loss of their trust. Makes it extra tragic - he really did love them to a fault, and in the end he still failed to protect them

I don't really understand why people say that. This Season flew by with 1 battle in the last two episodes. Gandalf went to the desert, didn't get very far past there and found couple guys and some more halflings. It felt like he went on such a bigger and longer journey of self discovery last season. Elendil and Isildur move back and forth between Numemor and The Southlands without accomplishing much with Numenor's leadership just switching back and forth, stalling the story development in ever changing Queen good Queen bad Queen good Queen bad in the eyes of the people. The Harfoot culture and community last season had SO MUCH going on and so much new info about how they live. We had multiple fights constantly last season plus Mordor's birth. Sauron and Celebrim stayed mostly in one place all season. I enjoyed it all immensely, but it felt like this season less happened. Story wise, it felt like half a season to me.

Cat - You definitely have my vote for a Season 2 review! With Celebrimbor's final words to Sauron, I didn't take them as taunting Sauron so he would kill him. I took it as Celebrimbor having the clarity of death as he is effectively laying the guilt Sauron tried to place on him back. He's seeing clearly how much Sauron has chained himself, by placing his essence in the rings, how that will ultimately destroy him. I thought Galadriel's internal struggle with the guilt of aiding Sauron in Season 1 was well played out. Especially since she seems to have taken Celebrimbor's words to heart at the end of the episode, that it is light that defeats the darkness, not pure strength. As to your question about her nearly being pulled into the shadow realm after being stabbed with Morgoth/Sauron's crown and the lingering effects. My mind immediately jumped to a line from, I think *Return of the King*, Frodo about still feeling the Witch-King's blade long after Weathertop. My guess is that while she is free from it, she will still bear the scars of it. Sorry for the long reply! Thank you for reacting to this season!!

Nerdist: Why does Sauron cry at Celebrimbor’s death? Charlie Vickers: I don’t know. It just happened. And that’s the honest truth. As an actor you just put yourself in the moment and if something happens, it happens. It never happened to me before as Sauron and I didn’t want to block that. If they use it, they use it. And they did use it. But you can justify it so many different ways. He had a great partner in Celebrimbor who was the greatest of Elvin smiths, someone he revered and respected. They could have done really great things together. Celebrimbor could have been an amazing tool, but he killed him. And I don’t think he wanted to kill him in that moment, but he lost control, which is very Sauron. If anything, the tear (he cries) is probably more about his own reflection un himself, what he has become, and his history with Morgoth. Morgoth was very nihilistic and destroyed everything. He was out of control all the time, wrecking stuff. Sauron didn’t want to be like that at all. And then Celebrimbor says to him, “You’ve become a slave to the rings. They are your master.” Sauron loses control and kills him when he in fact needed him to tell him where the nine rings were. There’s a lot of sadness and anger and grief at the fact, that he’s seeing reflected in his own actions. Exactly what he doesn’t want to become. But then, interestingly, when Glug (the orc) comes in, you see this really quite fast transition into, “How can I twist this now?” And he calls him an Uruk to try and get him on side, which I think is really cool writing. That transition is quite un-human.
@tobbi11
@tobbi11 8 күн бұрын
Yes, Sauron is indeed different from Morgoth, but it's hard to sympathize. He used Celebrimbor's body as a war banner, so I don't know what respect you're talking about. the only evil in the one ring is Sauron's malice, hate and will to dominate. fair play to the actor for trying things out but he's playing Sauron, the most Evil being in middle earth second only to the "devil" him self, genocide is just another tool for him to use. he BREEDS half Orcs... to have a better SLAVE army. And he isn't "cool Evil" like Thanos. He is a coward that attack's the defenseless while avoiding fighting anyone that can even hold a weapon except in desperation, and when defeated, he begs and grovels, and your reward for showing him mercy would be a knife to your back and everyone you love. he is a walking talking metaphor for Evil. Galadriel , on the other hand, Tolkien wrote as the personification of truth, every time she speaks, it's not only the reader that knows it's true but every character that remotely knows her in the Legendarium never even questions her. They aren't main characters and they aren't relatable, because they aren't human. but humanizing them a bit for a new story in the legendarium sounds pretty good to me... cut to Galadriel being arrogant, rash and completely clueless (in armor for some reason). Sauron a humble drifter with the "bad boy that you could fix" vibe. and why does it make me so angry? because Tolkien spent almost his entire life working on his legendarium, lived through two world wars, an incredible a language professor, the father of modern fantasy, then these two young drama students decide to ignore pretty much all of tolkiens work and do a drama set in middle earth, give each other high fives, and just say "deal with it". this comment will be deleted I'm sure, and you can call it hate but I love Tolkien and everything he stood for while this show openly mocks him. fans of the show don't want to hear it because it could ruin their fun. it's a descent dram... dwarfs don't beg!?!? what does that even mean? Dwarfs have had to beg more than any other race in middle earth and when they literally got their souls through begging. like begging is a choice. so noble! only other option is starving or stealing you boobs, pride is a sin not poverty. if someone is still reading this I have only love for you no matter your opinion, love to the actors, love to the production team, love to every one that is put in the work.

Did anyone else feel like it had a special significance that Poppy's speech ended with Sauron looking very contemplative? Like the line that roughly goes "Sometimes you just have to accept that some things can't be fixed and all anybody can do is try and build something new" could indicate that Sauron realises after his confrontation with Celebrimbor and Galadriel that he can't fix Middle Earth (as he has said he wants) but he has to destroy it first in order to build it anew? I kinda got that feeling🤔

I reply you here it's better. Thanks to you to share all of these! 🤗 It's true! Also, I'm sure (although obviously we could never know since his character is out of the picture) that Adar would most likely have remained on good terms with the elves, dwarves and all the other people of Middle Earth. All to try to save and keep the Uruks protected. And also most likely, Mordor, with him would not have been the same land administered by Sauron (because now we have clearly understood that Mordor would have been the rightful land of the Uruks/orcs led only by Adar and not by Sauron who is the usurper) and as he himself had promised with his last words when he gives the ring back to Galadriel, promising that there would be a new beginning for everyone (in a good sense of course). How can you not love him? As for the old King Durin i have already expressed what i wanted to say. Beautiful and touching his exit from the scene. It could not have been interpreted in a better way, tragic and heroic at the same time. From there in fact also in the story the Balrog who is also called the Bane of Durin, making the name of the old king immortal, associating it with his heroic sacrifice and openly challenging the Balrog, contemptuous of danger and fear to save Khazad dum, his son and all his people by going to reseal the opening in the rock with the explosion of the shock wave caused by the collision of his axe with the sword of the Balrog, so the collapse of enormous stones occurs that go again to close the breach opened in the mountain by himself, thus remedying all his mistakes. It was really intense. I could go on and on about the other characters, all of whom were played, i mean ALL OF THEM, with their respective stories, their emotions masterfully. So i'll stop here. Last consideration, applause to all the actors, every single of them! Really good! Sorry if i write so much but you know how it is... when you really like something and you can't do without it 🤭😃 See you in your other videos, rest assured i won't miss them! @@YodatheHobbit yes I also like Arondir and Disa. Honestly I rated this season 8/10. Last one was 6/10. There problems with Numenor story telling and Isildur's company only points I took away. They needed 10 episodes and at least 1 more episode to make developments in Numenor more grounded. Everything they did with Harfoots reduction, Eregion and Khazad Doom was perfect. Tom Bombadil was done modestly with style.

I still don't understand why the creators of the series decided to hide who Sauron was at first, and now they've revealed who Gandalf is, although everyone has already guessed who the character is, and it's even clear that the Dark Wizard is Saruman. I don't understand why they had to hide it.

Dang, great call on the returning orcs being a trap. I didn't expect that tbh even tho we knew that was the endgame from the in-world history. I also thought he wasn't crying over celebrimbor but over the fact that he will be Lord of his rings and not the world in that prediction about his future. Yet he still makes the one ring after that, so didn't get what they were trying to say? That's a retcon I didn't like. That whole sauron reveal and war is supposed to take place over a couple years IIRC, but at least they didn't drag out the ringwraith rings across seasons.

I got a little miffed in the first season because of timeline issues and out of order issues, but I re gathered myself and went into this season with a more open mind and for the most part I was liking it. I overlooked all the little timeline issues and was just having fun with it. That being said, I'm have a real hard time with Gandalf being introduced so early. Gandalf didn't come to Earth till after Isildur had been dead for 998 years, and 1000 years after Sauron's defeat in the war of the last alliance. Gandalf was specifically sent to investigate why Saurons influence and power was on the rise again. The writers were doing so much better this season too. All they had to do was make him a powerful blue wizard. That would have fit perfectly!(they were supposedly badasses)

I really don't get the hate. The two main reasons people hate this (being "woke" and not faithful to Tolkien) are quite weak, IMHO. 1) I don't generally like woke stuff, because I don't want any social message to be unnaturally forced into the viewer or reader; storytelling first, message later. But not everything with a female lead or with different "minorities" as characters is woke. 2) Is this faithful to Tolkien? Hell no. Does it matter? Hell no! Way more influential and important literary works have been adapted without a lot of faithfulness. When directors or videogame companies adapted the Divine Comedy while changing it on a fundamental level, noone complained. When Kubrick made The Shining noone except for King complained about it being unfaithful. Same with Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and countless others. Why should this be different? Is this perfect? Again, hell no. I really didn't like the Numenor stuff. I loved the Durin and Eregion plots. But there are way worse movies or tv shows which receive much more unearned praise. Again, just my opinion...

I love your thoughts here and wish more people shared the same perspectives! I think the folks writing this off as “woke” and unfaithful to the overall lore (which I do agree - it has its deviations, but people act like it’s the end of the world) are missing out on what is otherwise a phenomenal, beautiful series that, in my opinion, enriches my love for LOTR even more and only adds to the whole experience!

It's interesting seeing this series through the eyes of someone not versed in the lore. The show is PAINFUL for me to watch because I've been familiar with the source material for like 35 years But, seeing you watch and enjoy it makes me feel a little bit better Imagine how amazing it would have been if they'd stuck to the source materials

@BumpyBaluga 9 күн бұрын
Well its hard to do that when the Tolkein family didnt give up the rights to most of the source material. As said by its showrunners its an interpretation of the Apendacies and Short Stories. If the Tolkein Estate allowed rights to the Silmarillion then yes I agree it would be so much better, but to be a gate keeper based off of what Amazon is allowed to use? Kind of unfair.

2nd age writing of Tolkien requires story fillers. There many lore pretenders out there who did but only watched Jackson's adaptations. There is nothing anti-lore in these series like the level of replacing Glorfindel with Arwen or skipping Bombadil in LOTR :D

@@qcrew2938 I can't, when the Amazon "loremaster" keeps trying to claim that it's accurate (on twitter) and I can read the appendix for myself, that's impossible. I don't want to speak out of turn. Are they ending season 2 and still acting like Gandalf doesn't know who he is? I don't have the patience for nonsense especially when none of the books suggested this. The Lord of the Rings movies already made Gandalf weaker then his book counterpart and now this makes him weaker and dumber? Edit - I saw the ending where he acknowledged he is Gandalf. It's 2 seasons in...get with the program showrunners.
