Can I say, you are an amazing human being. I could not get a plumber to look at my extremely loud v1500 hot water system without saying just replace it. I took the fan off and took a large lizard and decent huntsman spider from the cage. Not a peep out of it anymore. Thank you so much.

Mike is the Man! Woke up this morning for a Saturday shower. Rinnai fan is going bonkers.... loud as hell. Thought I was going to have to buy a whole new one. Followed Mike's instructions. Gecko was still alive in the fan assembly (poor fella). Gently set him free in the yard. Tossed the fan back in. Operating normally. Took about 20 minutes. Thanks a bunch for the video and knowledge Mike!

No Lizards but bark mulch !!! Thank you Mike for the excellent video regarding the combustion fan debug and replacement. I was seeing a code 61 (fan issue) on my R75 and after removing the fan from the housing I saw a 1" piece of bark mulch that was preventing the fan rotation. Took it out, re-assembled and boom, a hot shower after two day !! The inlet/outlet is right over a side shrub area that has mulch to control weeds, Thanks again.

Mike, your instructional video is excellent! My house has been renovated, and when they demolished a wall in the bathroom they literally threw much of the plater and lath into the wall. That cascaded down over time, and entered the Rinnai and got into the blower intake. I ran some electrical wire in this area, and even though I temporarily blocked the area above the vents some got in - and the unbalance was very loud! With your video I got the blower out, emptied the plaster, and it sounds new again!

Thanks for the great video. You showed me the magic two screws for getting the fan out. We've been getting a code 10 for awhile, and knew the fan needed to be cleaned out, just couldn't figure out how to remove the fan. Now that we have and cleaned it, running normal and quiet again. Thank you.

Thank you! Saved me a service call. FYI on my indoor Rinnai 65 I had 4 screws on the fan. 3 on the inner part (which didn't come out) and 4 on the outside. The upper right screw was the one that was difficult to get back in, but I wrapped the little red 'tie' strap that was on it around the screw driver and managed to get it to not fall out every time :) . Without even knowing how to take this apart I had it all back together and not making any more noise in about 45 minutes by watching your video. Oh and the culprit? A darn lizard that wanted to take a ride on the magic spinning wheel of death!

Thank you very much. My heater has been acting up for years and after watching this got the courage to address. Worked like a charm. Mine had those tricky wires you mentioned so I left them connected and worked around them. The fan was filled with lady bugs and pollen. Used a shop vac, compressed air, and a tiny screwdriver to clean up all the debris. Thanks again. - Erik

Thanks for posting your video. I had seen one other very similar, but it was not specific to my water heater model. I really appreciate that you covered both of the water heater models in your video. I was able to very carefully remove the wires and then pull out the fan and the dead bug. No more vibrations! One of the things I really liked in your video was how you made that little black line so that we knew exactly how to line things up when it was time to put things back together. Great tip. I also used my marker to draw on all of the wires that were clumped together to make sure that I got them all back the right way. That and a couple pictures to do a little before and after comparison. Again, thank you!

Thank you for your help. I have the Rinnai R75LS. I realized after watching the videos that the people who have been servicing it have never flushed it or taken anything out of it to clean it. 10 yrs of servicing. The fan was so full of bugs that I had to soak the housing to get the bug guts off of it. The heat exchanger was full also. Flushed it for 2 hrs. After putting it back together it was making load popping sounds, so I took the fan back off and realized that the rubber boot had been off the back side of it. Now it hums quietly like it did when new.

Thank you sir. I have a 2007 model R75 LSi (indoor). It was running great for 12 years, but suddenly today it started a horrible vibration. Haven't removed fan yet, but don't see evidence yet of wetness from leak. ( no gekkos here in Idaho ) ;) -EDIT - 18 minutes later. It was a MOUSE, and a big one, stuck in the squirrel cage! And still alive although quite dizzy! Like I said, no gekkos here! ha ha! All cleaned and back together now (an hour later) I will fabricate a screen tomorrow.

I have one for the books. I've been trying to cheap out . My first Rinnai started giving me 5 minutes of hot water then went cold - I thought it was Fubar . Bought a used one - installed and it worked for 3 weeks then popped a small hole in one of the exchanges tubes on the outside of the unit - so I bought another used one. Yesterday it shit the bed. it would want to start but would shut off and code 12. Pulled the fan and the squirrel cage was snapped off the shaft. I looked at unit 1 and the current unit ...same ..exact same fan. Pulled blower out of unit 1 - swapped with unit 2 and voila - it all fit..right up until i went to plug the 4 pin in....different sized! pins are just slightly wider. Soooo pulled the 4 pins out and figured theyd fit in the other plug - nope - to short. So put the wires back in old plug - plugged it into the blower - cut the red - black - yellow and white . cut the new and old ones and spliced ..its gonna work now ..nope .. its all correct..all in correct order ..So now I have 3 junk Rinnais ..Im going to line them all up outside and put about 600.00 worth of 306 rounds through them and buy a hot water tank. I guess i better ask the question...if the blower motors fit perfectly in another housing - has the same colour wires in the same order on the 4 pin plug in but the actual plug is different - if the wires are spliced in order - should it not work??

EXCELLENT INSTRUCTIONS You cover every aspect and do it in a very logical easy to follow format. Took the fan off, easily found the two lizzards, extracted them, blew it out, put it back together, runs like a new machine. A question, any tips on how to keep the lizzards out of the machine, it was full of empty egg shells etc. We are trying to fend them off with screen over the exhaust pipe.

Code 10 seems to be my trouble Mike. Not when I'm washing dishes or clothes, mind you. Always when I'm in the shower. Of course. Last year we took the fan off and found mud dauber wasps had built inside the fan and so I suppose that is the problem this time. Is there any way to prevent critters from getting in without interfering with the air flow and exhaust? I'm SO glad you are doing these videos! You do a great service to the public!

Jennifer Esss Rinnai has no approved screen to go over the vent pipe, buy there’s after market screens you can buy. That is one of the big problems we have here in Florida. If the dirt doers got into the fan they are in the vent and burner. You will need a qualified service Tec to check that. Mike

I was getting an error code 10, so I pulled the fan and burner and blew/cleaned them out--packed full of moths. Fan was 75% occluded! I blew the burners from the top only (fin side, not the holes). After putting it all back together, I received an error code 11. I looked through the burner window and about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way from the right was not light up, but the remainder was with a nice blue fame. I cycled it a dozen times without change. Any thoughts?

Rudy Ruedas that's an electrical short. If the unit cycles three times then codes to 19. Check the ground on the unit. If it's an exterior unit check how the electrician grounded it. If it's not it needs to be grounded. If it's an interior unit it came wit its own plug. Still check the ground. If not there's one of the parts shorting out. Hope this was helpful. Mike

Use a permanent marker to draw roman numerals on the connectors so you know which connector mates to the other half.
