RIO DE JE JANEIRO | Is it really that dangerous? 4 day itinerary in Rio

Everyone we spoke to had something to say about how dangerous Rio is, so we went to the city feeling slightly on edge. Don't get us wrong, there were areas that seemed unsafe and we made sure to 'dress down' and blend in. Overall, we loved Rio and thought it was an amazing city with plenty of hikes, beaches, and city life.
ABOUT US 👫​
We're a couple from the UK (Alex is from Wales and Hannah is from Scotland).
We've been travelling on and off for the past 9 years, visiting over 60 countries combined. Alex is currently studying coding and teaches English online whilst Hannah works in social media remotely.
We love sharing our experiences, travel and packing tips, money budgeting and everything else that we get up to!

I'm from Rio and I've lived my whole life here, it can be dangerous depending on where you go but it's not what people expect. If you are a tourist and wants to come here just be a little careful and you will be fine. It's not that different from other places. People here are very nice to tourists, even if we don't understand your language most people will always do everything to help you. It's a nice place so come visit, you will love it!

a piece of advice from a Brazilian to a foreigner who likes to visit Brazil, make friends with Brazilians, you will enjoy many places in Brazil spending little money and you will know how to walk the streets, and which places to avoid

I'd suggest you create more content in Brazil, we love watching tourists travelling here, and youtube's algorithm is really good pushing those types of videos for brazilians. if you film enough, you could create a video for each of the places you visit and we'd love to watch.

I'm Brazilian and I've lived in Brazil Rio de Janeiro all my life and I've never seen anything dangerous happen to me or anyone around me, my American husband lived in Brazil for 2 years and he can say the same thing, Rio is not what many people think , Rio is definitely not just favelas as many foreigners think , I love Rio so much .

Rio, Ilha Grande, Paraty, Angra dos Reis... Minas Gerais for food and mountains... Bonito for swimming with river fish...I'd check Balneario Camboriu in Santa Catarina for New Year's fireworks if possible... Still full of people at the beach but calmer than Rio I think... Gramado in Rio Grande do Sul and wineries around for a less tropical trip. Have fun! Cheers

@@5050travels Only some airports become more expansive destinations during this time of the year but others no so far from it can be much cheaper (see Correia Pinto EEA + bus if you want a cheap way to get to Balneario Camboriu - if you decide to go)... But Curitiba airport (closer) or Florianopolis (closer) or Navegantes (closest)

In terms of safety I think it's very different when you are just staying there for a week or two versus when you are staying there for a few months or living there. Because you're probably going to be able to spend a lot more money on a hotel room and a safe area versus when you live there you have to live in a neighborhood with Brazilians so I would say take this video with a grain of salt because those are two very different situations and that will definitely affect the level of danger. That said Copacabana is not the safest especially at night especially as a gringo.

I live in São Paulo, another big city in Brazil, i never been to Rio de Janeiro and my expectation from there it's a dangerous place where u can be assaulted at every single moment of the day, but some peoples thinks São Paulo is the same way but it doesn't to me... U just have to know the places you can go and if the time is appropriate

@@anonimoqualquer802 It's really dangerous. I'm 45 years old and I went to Rio for the last time when I was 15. Relatives also left. I don't intend to go back. There are countless places in this country that are safer and each place with its beauty and peculiarity. Brazil is not just Rio.

@@ktaedear As muitas vítimas de balas perdidas te desmentem! Eu sou paulista e ia muito ao Rio como turista e levava amigos estrangeiros. Na última vez eu estava com um casal de amigos alemães no calçadão de Copacabana, cheio de gente quando começou uma briga de faca entre 2 ambulantes bem perto de nós. Saímos correndo! Outro dia estava com eles num buteco chique em Botafogo, bem perto do Shopping quando começou tiroteio entre bandidos. Entramos correndo no bar que abaixou as portas e ouviamos gritos de gente apavorada do lado de fora. Minha amiga alemã chorava. Voltamos para São Paulo naquela mesma noite e nunca mais voltei ao Rio e desaconselho meus amigos a irem! Vou a praias de SP ou de Sta. Catarina! Para nó o Rio acabou, já era! Muito perigoso!

@@san4123 NEGATIVO! Dei essas experiências pessoais como exemplo e comprovação do que as estatísticas oficiais mostram: o Rio é sim muito violento! No ano passado, a cidade de São Paulo teve 6 assassinatos por 100.000 habitantes, o Rio teve 18,5, ou seja, 300% a mais! Estas cidades turisticas que você citou tem índices muito menores que o Rio e eu estive nelas em diferentes ocasiões e tive ótimas experiências em todas elas e nem vi crimes acontecendo como vi no Rio! Esta é a causa que o turismo cresce muito mais em São Paulo que no Rio! Enquanto SP tem grandes hotéis em construção, o Rio vem perdendo grandes hotéis - ontem saiu a notícia que o Ipanema Inn vai ser transformado em apartamentos residenciais!
