This happens. Totally normal for many different animals. My dad raised German shepherds for years and one time there were some that looked totally healthy but a few days later didn't survive and so the momma ate the bodies. My sister had a hairless rat that was pregnant and she got stressed when giving birth and started eating her babies and she ended up dying herself. We didn't know she was pregnant when we got her so we didn't know anything about them giving birth.

They only need to feed off the mom for a day or two to get that first milk that helps the babies boost their immune system. After the first few days it doesn’t really make a difference as they only produce it for the first few days.
