I've shed the odd tear when burying some of our ladies over the years. It's sad when they die, but at least it means it frees up a space to get more chickens. Great video, thank you.

As I am watching your video, I look out our back door which is a glass slider and one of our chickens, Scarlet, is looking in. Expressing her condolences I suppose. We have five and get 3 to 5 eggs per day which is plenty for us. Sorry for your loss. Have you tried your hand at hatching fertilized eggs with an incubator? Or if one of your hens gets broody she can do the hatching for you.

When you said she was waddling, I'm pretty sure she was egg bound.

had the same problem. I was told the cedar shavings was the reason. They occasionally attempt to eat them and the shavings will not break down in the craw. Consequently, the result is death. In my case, I switched to sawdust as a bedding and no more dead chickens.

+Ken Lelon well we dont have cedar shavings having but i am sure it was a stuck egg or something with the food. Who knows really, all i know is i hope the other five stay healthy:)

raccoon found a unsecured part of my chicken coop. just a small area I hadn't dug down and put a barrier, and he got away with 2 of my chickens. wasn't happy. I caught it in a trap a couple of days later.

how many do u have in. ther i have a coop 4&12 foot i have 7 , chicks they're 2 monts old do u think i have to spanded wen they grow.the coop is 6' tall

Sorry to hear one chicken died. I'm glad Bloody Mary accepted back in. It could be you don't have rocks or hard pellets for them to break down there food. Chicken don't have teeth to chew there food.

Yes, you cannot always feel it, she just looked like one we had, didn't know until the autopsy (we cooked and ate it)

I am guessing Bloody Mary fits in the pecking order now due to coup size to number of chickens ratio. Six may have been too many... we have 4 chickens in a 4'x6' coup (2 nest boxes) and a 12'x6' run. They get along fine. I found there are number of square feet per chicken ratios floating around the internet that are supposed to minimum requirements for 'happy' chickens. The engineer in me makes me always stay around 50-60% mark. So far so good! Good luck, and I hope it was not anything contagious!

unfortunately we cannot have roosters in the subdivision where we live.

She could of been possibly egg bound. If one of your other chickens starts showing the same symptoms a warm Epsom salt (make sure to soak their butts for at least 20 minutes) bath every day for a week, and make sure they are getting plenty of calcium, because that is what causes a chicken to become egg bound. My smallest chicken became egg bound this summer and it was an easy fix☺

I will mail y'all some free fertile eggs next spring. Khaki Campbell & fawn and white Indian Runners. They have a cute little incubator for 63 dollars on amazon. You have to turn the eggs but it would be a great school project! If you want some. Depending on how it works out for me, I have never done this so I hope all goes well!

I had a case of something very similar to this happening to one of my chickens and we brought her inside and nursed her for two weeks and actually took her to the vet who diagnosed a lung infection. After this I found egg changes in many of my flock. I hope you don't have that happen to your flock.
