The shortstop was not doing what the Ripkens said. He didn't allow the ball to come to him and drop the glove on the "runner". He went out after the ball.. The second baseman did it correctly.

And what about the batter hitting a ground ball where you were?? DON'T SELL OUT TIL THE PITCH HITS THE CATCHERS GLOVE, TWO SIDE STEPS PUTS YOU IN A LITTLE BETTER POSITION,THEN BREAK ON TO BASE WHEN THE PITCH HITS THE MITT

You may be able to get away with that at the little league level as the runner cannot leave until the pitch crosses the plate. But at higher levels that play with a lead and steal on the pitcher, you have to break to the bag as soon as the runner takes off. That’s the beauty of the game, the hitter may hit it where the fielder use to be before he left to cover the bag,it’s a beautiful chess game.
