I would like to see the 2B man’s route to the bag.

Yea everything that you teach was taught to me when I was playing travel baseball but not so much playing recreational baseball. There might be a few things that you teach that I forgot about and I want to be a baseball instructor so bad and your drills are helping me to put them into practice

It's a niche play, but can you cover throws from left to 2nd going for the tag (batter trying to stretch a double)? I have no idea where to stand, and nearly got trucked last game since I drifted into the basepath covering the throw.

I could not agree with you more. Specifically regarding two comments. You have have to give up something to get something and go to the front of the bag to receive the throw so you can keep the throw from possibly getting into the runner and caroming into the outfield. Also, I know you aren’t necessarily addressing the catchers approach to throwing out runners but so many coaches teach their catchers that when they come up throwing to aim for the pitcher’s head. I do not. I teach my catcher(s) to make the bag their target so if they leave their throw up a couple of feet (or more) then the throw would only be thigh to waist high rather than air mailing the throw in to centerfield. Catchers tend to get a little pumped when they see a runner on the move. Just my approach.

Two things you could have added to this video. The second baseman’s route to the bag and how deep the other guy should be when backing up the throw

I have no idea why I’m here I’m an outfielder/3B. I play 3B on my school team but I got 1 game left and this video may help me for that steal

I think prioritizing keeping the ball from getting past you is an equally important key in covering the base, especially at young ages with less skilled players. Similar to how we teach a first baseman to come off the base to keep the ball in front. Even if it means coming up and off second base to field a low throw on the fly and forfeiting the possibility of a scoop and tag. It is too unlikely that a young player is going to scoop a low throw and tag the runner in time. It is far more likely that low throw will get past the fielder providing an opportunity for all runners to advance. I would rather *give up* the low chance of actually getting the runner out on a scoop and tag and *get* the higher likelihood of keeping the runners in place. Especially at the lower levels with less skilled players where the chance of actually getting the runner are way less than 50/50 even with an acceptable throw..

If you straddle the bag what prevents the runner from not sliding and just running the SS over?

Do you recommend that third basemen also get in front of the bag for steal coverage?

I like the front of the bag because it makes it a slightly shorter throw for the catcher. Getting the ball into the glove as quick as possible I think is the best thing you can do

Straddle* the bag , then you can just drop the tag straight down , let the ball travel more because the ball is moving faster So You can catch & drop Or even A Perfect placed throw you’ll be right there receiving it in place. Also straddling the bag puts you in place to drop your left leg/ shin down to block the bag if you need to . But usually You can catch the ball & drop the glove all in 1 motion and they’re OUTTA THERE !

@@CSDonohue11 it’s possible that I like the shorter throw because my favorite team up until this year has had catchers with noodle arms lol

"You can go open mouth-close mouth, or you can just talk." I found this funny for some reason.

this is a pet peeve of mine, I wish the coach would take a quick look at the defensive alignment and make sure the players are in the right spot, my kid is frequently a few feet out of what i would call double play depth. i don’t want to step on the coach’s toes and tell my kid where to play, but the coach isn’t telling my kid where to play either.

If someone plays the front of the bag, I'm going to have kids hook the back all day long. Can't reach their body and their little hand is the only target. Ball travels faster than the glove. Cutting it off slows down the tag. Might be great at younger but I think straddle is better at older ages.
