The 4th one is here! Ripley is resurrected and is now a clone/xenomorph hybrid which is pretty fun! Some cool things in this movie and some bizarre things in this movie for sure! It is fun though that's for sure! See y'all for Prometheus! Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

So, *Alien Resurrection* is actually a spiritual follow-up to the cute, clonely parable "City of the Lost Children" and not really a sequel to *Alien,* at all.

I swear at some point they compare the size of the ship to the size of our moon. Either way it seems like it's big enough to be a possible E.L.E. event causer. I love that whitish Alien, the way it makes the innocent eyes/face. Makes it scarier when it does evil. It's essentially a baby, so when it's dying it kinda gives you that "aww man that sucks" feels even though it needs to die. CGI looked decent though I swear I remember it not looking this good, but not terrible. I think maybe Ripley might not necessarily being chased, but trying to get to the shop before it leaves, maybe? I think I'd give this around a 7 out of 10 score. I actually saw this one in the theater. The first Alien movie I got to experience in the theater. By the way, the Alien franchise always makes me think of the same question, that I also get during a lot of zombie movies. What makes an alien decide to kill or to take home for implantation? What makes a Zombie just bite someone and then tear another one into pieces. It always just seems weird sometimes cause I'd guess a species like this would want to save as many victims for baby making as possible.

I think the answer is a bit of a kludge / cheat, that the aliens have a form of "genetic memory" and so when the queen was inside Ripley, maybe it somehow assimilated her memory into its genetics, or something, or vice versa, incorporated its genetic memory into her, and so when they retrieved Ripley's DNA from the prison planet, they got a commingled set of DNA from both the Queen and Ripley, and it took them a number of attempts to clone her / them both in a way that wasn't a complete monstrosity / aberration (hence the prior subjects 1-7)... And even then they were still commingled, with Ripley having some of the Aliens' characteristics (acid blood, etc.), and the Queen having some of Ripley's (reproductive system, etc.)
@christophero1969
@christophero1969 Жыл бұрын
@@MGmirkin Yes, there is actually a "genetic memory" on earth. Insects and birds do not go to flying school, woodpeckers do not copy other woodpeckers to learn how to peck wood, beavers do not watch other beavers to learn how to build a dam and Human babies(when born in a tub or pool) do not just magically swim when born. It's called "INHERITED INTELLIGENCE" and yes it is and has been a very real part of our continuing Human\Mammal\Insect existence. Look it up. When you go to school for science, you learn this, if your parents did not tell you already.

According to the lore, Morse (the only survivor of the events of the third movie) wrote a book about his experiences titled „Star Beast“ (in real life a working title of the Original Movie). The Book was quickly suppressed by Weyland Yutani but a few copies made it out there, one surviving long enough to fall into Call’s hands which started her on her quest.

Yeah, Joss has essentially said that he was asked to submit a script, and he submitted a joke script using his concept stage characters for Firefly, and was shocked when the script was chosen. He was then given very little time to rework the script in to something more serious.

There's a lot of good stuff in Resurrection, but it's still a big mess. Winona Rider is really cute as Cal (3rd android gets a C name after Ash & Bishop 🤣🤣🤣), the crew of the Betty are very proto-Firefly, and feral Ripley is pretty badass. Also has a fun appearance by 'that guy' actor Leland Orser (the rescued chestburst victim) and a weird performance by Dan Hedaya (he ate so many lemons for that one scene he made himself sick 🍋)

I guess Whedon has fallen from grace and gets a lot of hate these days but it should be noted that his original screenplay is out there and can be read. The most notable thing is that the alien hybrid, Ripley, and Call end up fighting it out in a huge battle on the surface of the earth after they land. It's a much better ending. Also, as he stated in interviews, the dialogue was sometimes rearranged seemingly for no reason, with characters saying lines meant for other characters. Also, I would say the sensibility of the director, while certainly unique, did not exactly work tonally for the Alien franchise, at least in my estimation. The movie has an odd and surreal aesthetic that pushes against actually being frightening.

This can be called a Guilty Pleasure. It's also for fans of director Jean-Pierre Juenet (which I am) who barely speaks English and this is his only American film and because of his poor English he needed an interpreter. He's a very quirky eccentric film maker who uses a lot of strange camera tricks (note Brad Douriff's continued distorted face and the birth of the Xenomorph). He was chosen because he impressed everybody with "Delicatessen" and "City of Lost Children". He decided to make it a dark comedy and was encouraged to add more violence. However, he didn't get along with Joss Weldon. After he finished A4 he went and made the acclaimed "Amelie" which introduced Audrey Tautou. He only made about 4 more movies and several shorts because his weird camera effects and stories make it hard to find backers. Then due to the loss of backers he didn't make another film for 10 years until he got backing from Netflix this year to make "Bedbugs." It's worth the time to check out his stuff on YT.
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno Жыл бұрын
He's an excellent director. He's just a really weird choice for this series because of his quirky sense of humor, which doesn't quite mesh with the tone of the previous three films. And if the special features are any indicator, he felt somewhat obliged to deliver a conventional Hollywood action film despite his natural arthouse tendencies, so this film may warrant comparisons to David Lynch's Dune (another case of a director playing against his strengths).
@jeremybates7332
@jeremybates7332 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. I think that if you see Delicatessen and City of Lost Children before A4 you get a better idea of what his intentions were. There's also a directors cut that you can find on DVD that amps up the camp in a way that is more consistent with his filmography even though it pushes further away from the Alien franchise. I remember how stoked I was to see this when it came out because I loved both the director and Alien.
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno Жыл бұрын
@@jeremybates7332 Yes, I prefer the longer cut for that reason. If it has to be silly, it should be more consistently silly. You could even argue that it's thematically appropriate in a film that deals with the absurdity and meaninglessness of bringing back Ripley and the aliens (i.e. the franchise itself).

Thank you for the review. I agree it is the lesser of the first 4. I don't think the Director was the right fit for this franchise, but still appreciated his contribution. I have seen his work prior to this one and hence I still like this movie for its fun and quirky factor. As another posted, I would also encourage to give Delicatessen, City of Children and Amelie a watch. The camera angles are much more eccentric in these French films, particularly the 1st two. Amelie is considered his best work and probably the easiest to consume.

Fan theory is that the Doctor in 3 took blood samples from Ripley whilst treating her. So, that's it, the end of the Alien series, Ripley squashes the bugs, get's her crew, ship and little girl back, finally makes it to Earth. She finally has her happy ending.

I always thought the aliens in this movie looked more like giant roaches than frightening extraterrestrial monsters. They absolutely wanted you to feel sympathy for the alien, at least they wanted you to feel RIPLEYS sympathy for the alien, given their shared origin, its like her putting down her child or siblind. However they sort of backed themselves into a corner where the very act of making it sympathetic made it not a good villainous monster. Maybe there was a better way to design it, or maybe they created a story idea that ultimately couldnt work on both levels simultaneously by definition.

The final Alien hybrid was more Ripley than Alien. So when it saw the queen, it killed it, because "that's not my real mother". That's why the hybrid Alien has such a betrayed expression on its face, because Ripley is its real mother, yet Ripley's the one who has to kill it.

In my opinion this movie is based not on the previous aliens movies but rather on the dark horse comics. The dark horse comics have a ton of really great aliens stories and even the story this is loosely based on is a fair bit different from what is shown in the movies. This is why it feels different from the previous movies as its story feels more like reading one of those comics and less like an aliens movie. If you want to see more aliens content I suggest checking out the aliens comic book series. Some of the stories are not perfect while others are pretty amazing. Too bad this is where the franchise pretty much died as after this it was merged with something else.

Took me a while to really like this movie, even through I still consider it inferior to 3 (which itself was a step below 1 and 2). But it has a lot to like about it: Weavers' performance, (most of) the Cast (Ron Perlman and Brad Dourif are always a win), the production design by Nigel Phelbs (really love the sets), the top-tier practical effects (and modelwork), Darius Khondji's eccentric cinematography, John Frizells' Score (which is both beautiful and terrifying in equal measures). And that Swimming-Scene is exceptionally well made. I'd even say that the cinematography has aged well for being 25 Years old. On the other hand, its tonally uneven, often quite dumb and probably too eccentric for its own good. It doesn't take itself as seriously as the others did and thus comes across as less of an "Alien"-Film and more like just another monster-movie but one that is very well made on a technical level.

You know, stealing a bunch of colonists going to a new life on a new world and selling them to a military base that's using them as hosts for alien eggs has GOT to be the most EVIL thing I've ever seen in a space or fantasy movie, EVER! That guy that woke up with one in him, he thought he was coming out of hyper-sleep to a welcoming party on a new planet. What he got was chestburster PTSD. Not cool, man. And, honestly, if any one of us was to be a character in this movie, we wouldn't be a hero, or a villain, we'd be the background characters that get screwed over. Just like in superheroes and Godzilla movies, we're the people running around and dying in the carnage happening all around us. It's not fair.

I eat lemons, once in a while. Dunno, ever since childhood I would occasionally enjoy a slice of lemon or two, with a bit of salt sprinkled over them. My palate just really enjoys the sour citrus. Definitely not a whole one though and indeed they would not crunch when bitten. This sequel was so cool for me when it was released because it felt based a lot more on the Dark Horse comics that took up the "Alien" license. Cloning xenomorph hybrids for combat purposes is a concept straight out of those comics and it was so neat to see on the big screen. Ahhh, if only "Alien vs. Predator" had committed to taking more from its comic book roots. Oh well. It could have been worse. - There is in fact an extended edition of "Alien Resurrection" that, if nothing else, spotlights more dialogue from Whedon's script that was mercifully cut or altered for the theatrical version and helps add some appreciation for what we ultimately got. Like you said, an enjoyable sequel but not the best it could have been.

So, yeah, the "newborn" as it's commonly referred to, is a weird thing that's kind of a subject in and of itself, in terms of how it was kind of used in the movie... This movie kind of "remixed" elements of the aliens + humanity. So, Ripley wasn't completely human. the xenomorphs weren't completely alien, but had some human DNA commingled in. The "queen" wasn't fully xenomorph, didn't have an ovipositor and egg sac, I guess? Though, clearly there were eggs. Or if it had an ovipositor it **also** had something of a more human reproductive system, as shown in the ending, when it kind of "gives birth" to the "newborn," which is more human than alien (hence the eyes, which xenomorphs don't have), but still alien. It almost immediately kills the queen, seemingly in either disgust [for being born as what it is, like "how dare you give birth to me?"], or hatred (likely from Ripley's influence / genetic memory, or whatever the movie's conceit is?). It's made to be disturbing more than scary, and also slightly sympathetic. Its birth is kind of an accident of nature / genetic engineering. It should never have been created, it's an abomination, of sorts, and it may well know it. And it seems to know that Ripley is, in a sense, its mother or grandmother, and so there's a kind of familial connection there, and Ripley uses that to her advantage to lull it into a false sense of security, in order to destroy/murder it. And that final scene is the "newborn" basically being killed via infanticide and/or "betrayal" by a family member. So, while we're supposed to hate it, we're also supposed to feel its betrayal by Ripley and its not understanding why its mother/grandmother is killing it, as well as its fear of its impending doom, and the overall horror/pain of the gruesome way it's dying. So, yeah, you're feeling how you're supposed to feel, both elated and disgusted at its death... 'Cause, well, it kinda' makes you think a little bit, about the conflicting feelings. Overall, again, the movie is goofy and weird, enjoyable but, kinda' "bad," as you say. It's one of those moviee you love to hate, and hate to love, but there it is. ----- Now go watch AvP (Aliens vs. Predator). It's a fun popcorn action flick with lots of callbacks to the originals. and AvP: Requiem (basically "Part II" as it picks up right about where AvP left off), and has a few more callbacks...

It's behavior was neither alien, nor human. To me it came across like... Shit I was going to make a film reference I don't know if you've seen yet. Anyway, I think it was supposed to make you feel uncomfortable, and simultaneously that you felt sorry for it, but also wanted it to die. So yeah, can this film just be fun to watch? Sure. The movie is not bad. I think it is important to keep in mind that this is the fourth of the franchise and it had to start out from a situation where the story didn't really allow for an easy continuation. So I guess the intention really was to just go all out and have as much fun with it as possible. In that respect the movie is actually quite good. It would have been interesting to see the franchise continue from this point on. Unfortunately the remaining movies of the franchise are all prequels. Oh, and...... I eat lemons...... now and then. I actually do not mind the events of this movie. Really they can all still exist in canon with only one slight tweak.... If you remand the 3rd movie to just a hyper sleep fueled fever dream, These events can perfectly well take place just because they already have samples of Ripley's blood from her initial rescue from 57year hypersleep in the Nostromo escape pod, and Xenomorph samples have been driving Weyland-Yutani and the Military to act since OUR era. (You will see this in other parts of the franchise). So they have a number of legitimate sources for cloning material. Whether you use alien three's timeline or the dark horse comic timeline, 200 years In the future gives you a lot to play with, And that works very well. She wasn't running because she was being chased she was running because she was racing and the hybrid actually Got there 1st and hid as aliens are likely to do do. The hit-and-miss mental connection is a dangerous thing because it goes both ways. Now it is time to get into the aliens versus predator content. Enjoy!!

But that would have required dropping the "pity for the aliens" angle, either by making them unpitiable or by giving them Ripley's hero role, with Ripley's villain turn shocking us either way. The hybrid was all Jeunet. He and Joss completely refused to understand or accept what the other was going for. Whedon wanted funny drama post-Buffy proto-Firefly sci-fi without caring about the Alien franchise, Jeunet wanted psychosexual horror like the first movie, but felt the sex needed to be front and center, and the studio wanted contradictory bullsh-t. They all got their wish, but there was clearly a monkey's paw involved.

Saw this in the Thearter in my late teens with friends... the Human Baby Alien scared the shit out of me especially its death, just the mannerisms and sounds going from violent to sympathetic and back again. Still cant really watch it without a sense of revulsion, only real time a movies made me feel like that. lol decades latter and I had to still mute the sound and look away when it died in your reaction... just like I did in the thearter, and im not ashamed to say that. Its not the best Aliens movie, but its still an ok film... one thing I just realized though is when the commander gets his brain poked, im surprised he pulled some out to look at it, since that would be from his visual cortex, meaning he's probably blind at that point lol.

I liked this film when it came out even though parts of it jumped the shark. I big thing that I never understood is why, initially, would aliens would kill humans if they needed them to complete their reproductive cycle. Good performances save a lot of the story. Along with Tuco from The Closer, you have Hellboy, the deep throated baddie from The Crow, the original Chucky, and Nick Tortelli from Cheers.

Jeunet and Whedon = not a good mix. But you might want to check out other movies by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Also, I like the director's cut of this one just a little bit better. Same with Alien 3's "Assembly Cut" (or whatever it's called).

The 2 visuals that stick with me between viewings are: the hybrid Queen giving birth instead of laying eggs; & the Ripley clone with alien limbs begging for help. Also, I'd picked up on the early throw away line indicating Winona's character is a robot. Why does no one catch that?

The Aliens franchise - The Haunted House, The Action Movie, The Art Movie, and the Bad One. I agree the alien at the end is too human, and I think that's the point. It's tragic, and the more human eyes suddenly makes you feel empathetic towards it. But it was so slimy and grosssss. I guess that was the point.

Out of all the alien movies, I'd say this was my least favourite, doesn't mean I think its a bad movie, just wasn't overly struck on a few things, was still an okay movie but not the best, like you I enjoyed alien 3 more then resurrection, think this was made as a more blockbuster movie then anything. I'd recommend the next one you watch is promethus, as the next alien movie ties into that so I'd watch promethus first then watch alien covenant

This was just another insult to injury after Alien3 towards the whole franchise. Didn't need to exist. Or at the very least, written better. It still falls into the same tropes about studying and capturing the xenomorphs for profit, despite being constantly proven to be too dangerous. Makes me profoundly upset Neill Blomkamp's project never came to fruition.

I mean, it was **always** going to happen in-universe. Eventually, the Company (or someone) was going to get their hands on one and try to misuse it, and it was always going to go horribly awry... So, it's **not** unexpected. Personally, I always thought they were going to get it back to Earth, and then Earth was going to get infested, and they'd eventually film Aliens: Earth War, or something like it. But, no such luck.

@@MGmirkin I understand what you're saying. The concept of researching the aliens goes hand in hand with resurrecting Ripley. Something original as you mentioned like an invasion would've been more refreshing. I know it's widely despised, but Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem dealt with this exact scenario very well. I actually liked that film. R rated as opposed to its predecessor and no bizarre plot points like how the Predator worked alongside a human. The sequel just worked better for me.

Saw this in the theatre as well when it came out. At 35:53, you talk about the hybrid alien and how goofy it looked and that it wasn't scary. Everything you felt about that was exactly what everyone else felt, what I felt during its reveal, but you talk about it as if it's your "gotcha moment" and that they didn't make you feel the way they wanted you to feel about it. In fact, are of your fellings about it is exactly what you were supposed to feel! What's the thing to do these days? Feel exactly what it was designed to make you feel and then turn it against the filmmakers as the flaw of the film? Ypu keep proving that what they did work and then make it seem like they didn't mean to do that?

I think the term you’re looking for is “guilty pleasure.” I thought it was a much more ambitious, crazy-fun ride than the depressing, bleak Alien 3. AR had more insane scenes - clones 1-7, the underwater chase, the newborn and its death, etc. I don’t know why this film gets more hate than 3, because it tried something different: the genetic aspect of the aliens.

This is certainly the worst Alien film (outside of the AVP movies, of course), but if you're in the mood for an utterly silly farce that's fully aware of the corporate cynicism behind its very existence, then it's kinda entertaining on those terms. For years, I couldn't forgive it for ruining the cathartic ending of Alien 3, but on the other hand, Ripley's sacrifice thwarted the efforts of Weyland-Yutani for two centuries, so it wasn't a complete waste. Too bad for her that there is no escape from the demands of a franchise.

Something I never understood about this movie is that why did nobody go back to LV-426? Sure, the atmospheric processor exploding was a thing but the explosion wasn't that big that it destroyed the derelict. The Aliens vs Predator and Aliens vs Predator 2 games of the early 2000s explore this much better, imho. AVP1 has a level which includes the derelict, and AVP2 states that LV-1201 was found from logs of the original derelict. Oh, well, we all have our preferences, innit?
@MAMoreno
@MAMoreno Жыл бұрын
@@weepingscorpion8739 If I were a greedy Fox executive in the 1990s, I would have slightly tweaked the opening of Alien 3 so that the fate of Hicks was more ambiguous--though with the heavy implication that he died, of course. Then I would have suggested going forward with a still-very much alive Michael Biehn for Alien 4, which would likely feature either the remains of the derelict Engineer ship or some other premise (AVP, perhaps?). But I'm with the Brandywine producers on this one. Alien 3 is the proper end of the story, even if that's not the most lucrative and franchise-friendly stance to take. That being said, I have learned not to hate Resurrection.

@GeoffTrowbridge
@GeoffTrowbridge Жыл бұрын
@@MGmirkin Except that’s not how it works. A vacuum doesn’t have any inherent “sucking” power. The force that pushes the air out into the vacuum is nothing more than the air pressure of the cabin, which is less than 15 psi. A typical vacuum cleaner produces air pressure at least twice that. But yes, it’s just a movie. (A bad one.)
