For the record Alien is not Ridley Scott's brain child. Ridely was only the director, he did not produce or write that masterpiece of sci fic horror. He also didn't write this or Covenant either, he choose a guy who gave us the Lost finale for this one. For Covenant he choose the guy who wrote the worst of the TNG films. Trust me, it shows. Just like to clear up that it's wrong for everyone to give Scott kudos for Alien when he did nothing but direct, and direct it well i will give him that, but he was NOT the creator of that series.

Alien Covenant is the successor of Prometheus. I'm still waiting for part 3. By the way, since flat earth is briefly mentioned, I don't believe in it either. I've listened to BOTH sides and flat makes no sense to me. The sun could then not set or rise either, e.g. with measured sun positions at the same time in different places, the constellations also do not match or the far north, where the sun never sets or never rises completely for a long time. In exchange. BUT otherwise NASA ect lies to us, too many things and not only that. The media lies to us 24 Hours a Day, like the politicians. In West and East. I just want to link some of the space lies, but mostly in German (please activate YT subtitles, for other languages) or mixed languages. Sometimes pictures speak for themselves. Before ALIEN, artist H.R. Giger designed DUNE, to be directed by Alexander Jodorowsky. The film never happened, but some of Giger's art for that film was used in Prometheus. Including Baron Harkoneens castle. Also, Prometheus was filmed in 3D and released that way theatrically and on disc. If you ever watch it again, try and see it that way. Makes it even better.

This movie suffers from a common problem in modern sci-fi productions: characters that are too stupid to live. Bad writing requires the characters to make stupid decisions to achieve dramatic effect. In the original movie, the cast were basically space truckers on a warn out freighter and their decisions were natural and believable. They weren't explorers or specialists. In this movie, the crew of this critical, well-financed exploration ship are literally morons. I saw this movie in theatres on release and there was so much hype for it and hope that it would re-boot the franchise after so many shitty adaptations. It was one of the biggest disappointments in cinema.

You're assuming that he was the only living engineer. He was the only one they encountered and woke up on screen, but there were other ships that we didn't see. We only saw a small fraction of the entire installation. Also, it seems there could be another world from which they came. Finally, the derelict ship from Alien was found on an entirely different planet.

Scott's overall plan was to create this and Covenant then I think two more movies to completely connect to the first Alien. He was able to do the first two and there's some pretty cool and interesting "short" films that are part of the story that are available online. But the other two have been on and off as to if they'll be made. I read that there's also some more "action packed - horror - shoot-em-up" Alien movies that are in the works that are supposed to be released in place of the prequel ideas. If that''s the case it would be a shame because I'd love to get a good full backstory. Short version: a lot of what you just saw is a setup for what's to come :)

It is a completely different planet so a completely different engineer. Prometheus really doesn't connect back to Alien. I liked the movie but there were definitely some plot holes in there that didn't make sense. Eg: A bunch of scientists/highly skilled professionals go to an alien planet and first thing they do was remove their helmets without any quarantine/containment procedures or air/soil/water sample analysis. And a high tech med pod only for male patients? How does that even make sense on a small space ship where every inch is premium and needs to be highly space-efficient, or even simply from a product design perspective. But I do think that the xenomorphs stemmed from bioengineering, rather than organically evolved. Because if a species can evolve such defense/offense mechanisms, one has to wonder about the world they originated from and what other predators were there that caused them to evolve such mechanisms.

If you really search there is a script out there i read which the Engineers were first discussing their eventual demise due to their inability to procreate, and 1 stayed behind to sacrifice himself for us to inherit their image/hopes and evolve beyond. But humanity disappointed them time and time again so we were scheduled for destruction, but something went wrong. When the Engineer wakes up and sees a human begging for immortality (something even they cannot accomplish) he is disgusted and kills everyone and resumes the mission of human destruction. Again we are not worthy and missed the whole lesson of mortality and evolution.

Yes, Prometheus & Alien: Covenant are prequels that try poorly to explain the origin of the xenomorphs and rewrite the origin story ignoring about 20-30 years of books, comics, etc.
@MGmirkin
@MGmirkin Жыл бұрын
So, yeah, **that** engineer is definitely dead, and this is a different planet from the one the ship is found on in the original Alien / Aliens. Different planetary designation (LV-426 was the original planet from Alien/Aliens, this was somewhere else). So, clearly, the "engineer" in Alien was a different "engineer" from the one in Prometheus. Covenant happens later after Prometheus (direct continuation). Won't say what all happen there. In theory, there were maybe going to be a few more movies by Ridley Scott to "bridge the gap" to the original Alien. Whether or not they'll ever happen, who knows? Given the middling / off-put reception of the first 2 prequels. On the one hand, I kind of hope they eventually get made, just so we have the complete story, if there's one in mind, and Ridley wasn't just completely winging the first two movies with no real final direction or endpoint in mind. On the other hand, I feel like it's a kind of a poor attempt to explain the xenomorph origin story and kind of "rewrite" it as that they weren't actually their own species but some kind of adaptive / evolutionary bio-weapon or bio-experiment gone awry that was then somehow kind of "stabilized" into whatever the xenomorphs became. Which, IMO, kinda' undermines the original movies a bit... So, I dunno... The whole prequel feels a bit forced / contrived somehow...

This is a movie with amazing visuals but with so many characters doing stupid things and making dumb decisions and also weird plot holes (the geologist who MAPPED the alien complex getting lost in it and the ship captain who can see their location via a holographic map couldn't guide them out and treated like it's one big joke) that I found it extremely difficult to maintain the suspension of disbelief. But the sequence of Shaw removing that squid thing from her abdomen was absolutely JAW DROPPING. As for the finale, I always get the impression the engineers created humans just so they can be eventual breeding stock for the xenomorphs.

Ohh, we gave it a chance, we just didn't like it, overall... 'Cause it felt contrived and tried a bit too hard at "explaining" the xenomorphs' origin, in a way that barely makes any sense. And, frankly, when you over-explain something, it becomes less scary. When you know too much about it, it just becomes kind of ho-hum. Part of the terror of xenomorphs is not knowing what they are, where they're from. They're simply a terrifying unknown unknowable force of nature removes from "what we know" about the universe. Acid for blood? How can that be? Mouths within mouths? How? Surviving in the vacuum of space? Whaa?? Trying to take us step-by-step through their "evolution" from black goo, to infected eel thing, to weird squid thing, to proto-alien ... just kinda' takes the mystery out of it. Even as it also barely makes any sense at all...

Yes but this movie is the set up for the second movie. I actually do like this movie very much when you watch the two in succession. This movie will feel much more connected after watching the second part. The Engineer that you see in the movie Alien is not the same one you see in this movie. This might be the only Engineer on this planet that is alive, but they even said this wasn't their planet but basically a Lab to create their bio weapon. The other Engineer in Alien is simply a different one in a different ship that was likely transporting the bio weapon when it got loose.
@MGmirkin
@MGmirkin Жыл бұрын
But, at the time of Prometheus, it was just "black goo" or a bioweapon, it wasn't a "xenomorph," so how / why would an engineer be carrying a ship with final-form xenomorph eggs, as opposed to just the "black goo." Like, somehow the engineer(s) would have to find out about the finalized/stabilized xenomorph variant, and then get a hold of **that** in order to transport it [as opposed to the "black goo"] and then crash. To me, it seems like there are just too many logical leaps in all this for this origin story to make any sense with the start of Alien. Unless more moviesget made that connect the dots in some plausible non-contrived way that actually makes sense to bridge the gap to the original movie.
@wickamo
@wickamo Жыл бұрын
@Michael Gmirkin No i don't think they are carrying eggs...I would hypothesize that they were carrying the bio weapon and it got loose and infected members of the crew much like in Prometheus... leading to the creation of a Zenomorph Queen which killed the entire crew and then layed the eggs after, awaiting more victims for hosts.

This movie took place on a completely different planet. So this is a different planet (lv-227?) different ship, different set of characters even if they are the same race The engineers kept messing with the bio weapon. One of the, I guess, common side effects of the infection resulted in the facehugger alien combo. So this is the aftermath of a containment breach. Ditto the original alien movie, containment breach on lv426 with a similar ship and engineer. So it's not a direct prequel, just linked by the bio weapon that causes the xenomorph.

I had the same problem with the pilot chair callback to Alien not syncing up and it actually took internet digging to find out it’s not the same Engineer or planet or horseshoe ship which is actually super aggravating. They are even supposed to be thousands of years separated in which case - change the design! If you are going to go that far out of your way to fan service and then deviate it’s just super wonky. I also don’t like the tired old space humanoid seeding the Galaxy trope - it’s a little too easy and narcissistic and (dare I say) religious of a universe explaining device. The reason Alien is so scary is because of how humongous and dark space is (in space no one can hear you scream) - this movie tries to explain and define to the extent that it basically castrates the xenomorph into a factory lapdog which is not really a great addition to the arching story. They strive to make outer space smaller and more defined. No thanks.

Couldn't agree more! When this film was announced, long before it even got the name Prometheus, they PROMISED us that this film was meant to be THE prequel to Alien & we "would get ALL the answers!" Yeah, right! The marketing for the film kept up this lie. I had already bought my ticket when they finally announced that this is not a direct prequel but actually a side-story happening before Alien in the same "universe." Uhm... then why all the promises & direct Alien nostalgia references in the marketing? They wanted us on the hook first, buying the tickets, then telling the truth. That is not how you create a lasting classic. Prometheus does have its following, but just as much those - like me - that not only got highly disappointed because they promised us a direct prequel with answers & there were none. And why, oh why all these stupid characters that absolutely do not behave accordingly to their trade their claim to have. Sure, ever since the first Alien we have had stupid characters but this stupid? Prometheus claims to be a horror movie. Where is the horror? When you wish for the stupid characters to die there is no horror, horror only exists if you care for the character's survival. Then there's the "abortion scene" with Shaw taking out her alien squid baby. Those that love this film praise it, & that scene by itself is interesting besides the fact that there's no way she had stayed awake to do all that & also run away afterwards no matter how much painkiller she injects, the human body can only take so much drugs before you pass out or overdose. But my real problem is that she produced this dangerous alien, right? And NO ONE else, besides David, even ever gets to know of its existence! Which makes that alien almost totally irrelevant. OK, it kills the Engineer, who cares? Imagine the first Alien & the chest burster pops out of Kane but no one is there to witness it & no one ever runs into the Xeno once it has grown up! Gee, what a fun horror story, people = nothing happens & the alien is meaningless. Guess what, that is exactly what happens in Prometheus! They tried to do the same thing again but left out all the horror & plot-driven meaning. Why does this story even exist? Prometheus is a film that is just a pretty surface & contains nothing. It gives nothing of value to the franchise it belongs to, or rather lied itself into. Instead of providing any answer at all it just gave more questions that we, of course, will never get answered since Covenant conveniently avoids doing its job as a story as well. By 2012 the Alien franchise had been around long enough for us to start looking at the origin & meaning of it all. We knew what the Xeno was by then, how it looked like & could do etc. That mystery was already then emptied & it was hard to go forward with new ideas. That was why I was so much looking forward to an origin story. I had watched characters I both love & dislike depending on Alien film die in so many movies, including the AVPs. I was ready to learn of the origin & why all these characters had to die & endure these creatures. They promised us to do precisely that & they got the original director to do the job. Well... Ridley was allowed to play Blade Runner in Alien & wonder about religion & the origin of humanity instead of the Xenomorph. He was permitted to leave the trail. I guess all the mistakes of Alien 3 was totally forgotten, even if the fan base had not. Some still fell for Prometheus. And if this had been an actual original story & movie, not trying or claiming to be part of the Alien franchise or any other sci-fi horror thing then this had been easier to swallow. Nothing excuses the idiotic morons that are the "characters" of this film, though, but still. But they from day 1 tried to sell this as a direct prequel to Alien & nothing less. They had a script that was tying into the first film but they skipped that & brought in Linderloff out of all hacks to give us this. If they had been honest from the start then Prometheus might have been more financial successful. It had reminded of Alien but not been considered Alien canon, far less disappointed Alien fans. I think even more Alien fans had been OK to this as an alternative sci-fi. But this is what happens when you lie to your audience & don't have proper plans & goals & stick to them all the way. Know what you wanna say. Or don't say anything at all.

The movie really fell flat for me for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. It didn't feel like an Alien film at all. More than that, although the film had some interesting ideas and was very impressive visually, the characters were all really stupid except for David. You had all these people who were supposed to be top experts in their field and they're all super terrible at their jobs, especially at being astronauts. Everyone makes really dumb decisions that get a lot of people killed. More than that, why on Earth would that medical pod only be calibrated for male physiology? That's just insane, a really weird, inept plot contrivance to justify the alien abortion scene. Most of the second half of the movie is like that, just implausible, nonsensical things happen that are barely connected to each other thematically or narratively, all problems that should have been solved at the script stage before a single frame of film was shot. I expected a lot more from Ridley Scott, and that was the most disappointing thing of all. Nice David Bowie shirt, by the way.

This is Covenant are just.... whatever.... completely disconnected to the original trilogy (no, I don't consider 4 as part of it). These 2 movies were just to try to profit on the previous story. I won't argue on the quality of these movies, but they are "based" on the ORIGINAL movies. Also, I really dislike the need to show where the xenomorphs come from. Completely unnecessary.

So did, i loved the soundtrack playing through the cinema, I purchased it afterwards. I call Prometheus a new year movie. That was the day I went to see it in the UK. I think that the film does get some flack, the biggest issue is the way that Shaw gets treated after this movie. I think the way they handled her character was ultimately very dissapointing. Something I never thought of the first time I saw the movie. The love scene between Shaw and her partner, she said she couldnt create life. I realised that his desire to procreate with her, might have been more the Alien dna at work here rather than anything else. That thought did not occur to me till I watched your reaction video. Their race's primary purpose seems to be to reproduce? I am guessing the Alien dna seems to be able to work even in hostile conditions. (Shaw being infertile etc). But that I guess would also be consistent with its accelerated development rate as we see it progress (for stories sake), quite quickly to a face hugger.

Hi. Have to give you, a DISLIKE. ""Nothing connecting to Alien Series""??OMG you have NO idea what you just watched.!! This shows who Weyland was and how he went to LV 236.There are MANY ENGINEERS. Another Engineer took another ship and was already infected by a xenomorph. It crashed into LV planet that Ripley crew went on. So Weyland Company already knew about the aliens being in that system . When Ripley crew were going by another LV planet, the company set them up with Ash. Ash was the next generation robot. David was the First. David and Shaw went to the Engineers Planet, where Alien Covent movie is based.. The rest of the Alien movies are junk, in my opinion. This wasnt meant to be a horror movie, just Sci-Fi. One thing you never learn in all the movies is where are the xenomorph are from and how a Queen egg is made. The Alien movie, in production last year was going to address this, but Disney and Scott had problems so this movie was never completed. Find the deleted conversation between the Engineer, David and Weyland. It explains much more. Scott said he cut it from this movie because he thought it would confuse fans more, but after hearing it I found the opposite effect. You need to re-watch Alien, Aliens, to get better understanding of the series.

This movie is trash and it's direct sequel is even worse. Your enjoyment doesn't negate the stupidity and horrific bad writing of both these movies. Fun Fact: The absolute stupidity of running away like Elizabeth and Meredith did from the Engineer's ship, has been dubbed the "Prometheus School Of Running Away From Things" trope by some cinematic enthusiasts. This troped is defined when a character(s) runs in a straight line away from a giant toppling structure instead of dodging to the side to safer ground. That scene is where a lot of the movie's earned ire comes from and deserved mockery is focused. Smoking Hazard Fact: Charlize Theron found herself struggling during her action scenes, due to her smoking habit, particularly the segments that required her to run through sand in boots weighing thirty pounds (fourteen kilograms). Music Enthusiast Fact: Composer Marc Streitenfeld had the orchestra play his compositions backwards and then digitally reversed the compositions for the final film. This made the music sound unusual and unsettling, which he felt was right for the film.
