Ripped Off?!! XP-510 to XP-540 owners get half a waste pad, half a printer life! But you can fix it

Silly question "What is a waste pad on my XP-540", I have had it for quite a few years and things are starting to go wrong. Paper Jams and a small white piece if plastic has come off the printer at the back just above the paper tray. No idea where it is meant to go either?
