If it's the design I'm thinking of, you have a fill hole and a vent hole. The latter allows air into the cartridge as ink is used up. If you didn't have an open vent the cartridge would not feed more ink as the air can't get in to replace it.

Few thing you can try that should help: 1. Use a USB cable connection to the printer (WIFI connection is blocked by some firmware updates) 2. Download and install the driver for your printer and operating system and install that (Make sure you disable the status monitor as per: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGPKZmdtnZuloKc ) 3. Temporarily disable anti-virus, particularly if you have McAfee, Norton, etc... As they can block the connection 4. Try a different USB cable (sometimes they can suffer from poor connection) and/or connect to a different USB socket on your computer 5 Try rebooting your computer and printer then trying again before you run anything else. Let me know how you get on either way...

Thanks for your feedback. We've considered illustrated text instructions but found that they tend to be harder to follow and less accessible. That said, I'll revisit that and see if we can come up with something better than our last attempt.

In fairness to Canon (and Epson) they do now have a lot more printers that have chipped maintenance tanks/cartridges rather than static waste pad holders and a need for third party apps to reset the internal waste ink counter. Unfortunately it's not 100% and they've made no effort to retroactively support end-users to do it themselves, even if it was only with software tools.

Aside from being outside the experience of most end users it’d be quite a risky enterprise… But hey, if it did work that way and you could make it work successfully, more power to you.

Check our WICReset videos on this channel as they deal with the reset process for various pc operating systems.

Try the nozzle check first and see if anything is missing there. And run a printhead clean routine through the printer’s maintenance function then another nozzle check in case the head needs to be primed. It may well be that the head has damaged nozzles though so keep that in mind

Can you take a screenshot of the error and email [email protected] with all your system information (OS, version, anti-virus installed [if any] and how you're connecting to the printer. We should be able to help from that.

Depends on the model. If you have a printer with a maintenance box then no.

Respectfully I believe a more appropriate question would be "Why did printer manufacturers not make a tool like WICReset readily available themselves?" Third party developers saw a need and created something that addresses that need. In doing so they've likely help keep hundreds of thousands of printers working well past an argueably artificial limit. I understand your frustration completely but I really do think your ire is misdirected if you think that third parties are the problem.

@@octoinkjet Fair enough. Apologies, I have misdirected on this! Epson is of course who I'm somewhat peeved about and am referring to, building in a kill switch for their products. In an era of recycling and avoiding waste, it is disappointing corporate behaviour on their part. Not a criticism of you guys.

Best way to check if it's a waste ink error is to use the WICReset app to "read waste counters". Doesn't cost anything to do this but will confirm if the waste ink is an issue. Search this channel for the keyword "WICReset" for videos on how to download and use the app (you don't need a key to read the counter).

The reset key is used to reset the waste ink counter, in the printer, back to zero. That in turn clears the waste ink pad error. The printer doesn't have a sensor that detects how full the waste pads are but instead calculates how much waste has been dumped into the pads and guesses when they're likely to be full. It should but we have a new video pending that shows how to use the app on Sequoia too. One outlying but potential wrinkle we've found is that it can fail to connect if the Mac is using iPv6 for all it's DNS servers so it's worth putting the google.com iPv4 dns settings in if that happens. (ie: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) temporarily.

Sounds like you may have had either an ink or environmental issue if a few weeks of non-printing was killing your printheads. We'd always recommend printing on a regular basis, using a good quality ink (and cartridge - as ink flow is important) and not having the printer in an overly dry/hot environment as that all helps keep things flowing. That said, going with a laser is always a good option if you're having problems with an inkjet and don't need (or want) to print regularly.

Try using the WICReset app to get the status and report info (no key required) and that’ll provide diagnostic info that I can use to understand the problem better.

No, the ET2850 has an internal waste counter, not a chip. The waste pad holder looks identical to the T04D1 but doesn’t have a chip reader. So you need to reset the waste counter with the WICReset app.

Possibly not as the whole system appears to have a series of ink buffers above the printhead that would potentially part empty and cause an air lock.

To be honest, this is effectively a hack as it's not something standardised or recommended by Canon. There response is going to be "buy a new one" but length notwithstanding, the idea is to help those who are able to revive their printhead. Worth remembering that Canon printheads use bubblejet technology that boils tiny droplets of ink to form a bubble that pops to jet ink onto the page. That boiling process is incredibly stressful to the nozzles and will damage them if ink isn't present or flowing, so you're not always going to revive a blocked printhead. It works often enough that it's worth trying IMHO. As to length, granted not everyone needs handholding but some do so I'd rather include too much information than assume everyone is a tech confident individual and leave folks confused and lacking in info. YMMV.

You may have some light soiling on the timing strip and/or disc that the printer uses for alignment. They’re the clear strip/disc that sit along the back behind the printhead and to the left of the paper feed roller.

Honest answer for now is that I don't know. We've not seen that unit before and would have expected it to have a maintenance box but I can't find a single reference to one. If you could contact us directly via [email protected] we should be able to figure out what your printer can/can't support with a few pictures of your printer, particularly the back.

You will need the reset key so best to get pad+key bundle as most economical option. Unfortunately the pad replacement doesn’t trigger a sensor or similar or it’d be so much simpler.

Which version of MacOS do you have and what was the exact error?

You want the G2 Printer Potty kit as your printer has just one waste ink tube unless my data is wrong. There’s a separate video for that one but the process is much the same.
