Great video.... Greentings from Lisbon - Portugal

What a great video, I just got into Plex back in August and at first I wanted nothing to do with Handbrake as I wanted a straight one - one rip but I found out that while my Apple TVs can usually decode anything that I throw at it my friends that I’ve granted access to my library are have trouble with non H264 files. Now I’m also running out of space and I have 2000 Blu-Ray movies & 210 4K Blu-rays and 330 tv shows on anything from DVD-4K to rip so storage is going to be a problem for me. I finally started using Handbrake first for the non H264 files and then on everything except DVD. Surprisingly I can tell the difference between a 30gb Blu-Ray rip and a compressed 5gb one. TV shows can be a real killer as I have Magnum P.I. Complete series at around 1.5tb alone so hopefully I can shrink it down by half or more. Anyway great video and I’m now subbed.

How cool. This is the method I use for my plex server too. I also retain subtitles for my hearing impaired wife.

I'm not hearing impaired but have family who need subtitles. It's shocking how many streaming sites do not use subtitles. Subs are quite useful for those films with Stallone, Statham or Vin Diesel in 🤣

Thank you Unky Joe for sharing your experiences. I stopped making my video library because I was unable to copy BDs. But I found MakeMKV a couple of months ago. I didn't know I could do more then copy the whole BD, I always used the top left yellow button to make a full copy. Story: We were about to go on vacation, I bought the Alita BD in a rush because I really really wanted to see it and couldn't make it to the cinema back then. I made a copy for the vacation (no portable BD drive) and then, when we watched it the closing credits were missing. After watching I was told there was an important scene in there (still haven't seen it). I didn't know I could click on the drive icon and select what I need. I always made a whole copy, used MKVToolNix to extract what I need from the video file but in Alitas case the credits seem to be in a seperate video file. So I'm going to try your way right now. And I also thought about HandBrake and re-encoding but didn't want to put the energy in it to create x265. But I am planning to store the BDs long time on my NAS and use Kodi (without Plex, just bare SMB via kernel mount for performance) so I'll go and try to make proper x265 I think. I have a lot of space on the new NAS but as always it won't be enough long-term. Thank you again for sharing your workflow and showing me this awesome feature I missed.

When adding a video to your server, i recommend adding a year to the title. Like instead of Breakfast at Tiffany's, make it Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961). Its easier for plex to find, especially if there's multiple movies with the same title. Also try vidcoder for batch encoding. It uses handbrake as its engine with a different interface, but it's easier to trancode multiple files at once.

In MakeMKV if you go into Preferences then set Language to the one you want it will only rip that Language for video and subs saves picking each time

I thought that Blu-Ray discs are encrypted using a version of AES (AACS) would I be right in thinking this.

mkv has been out of beta for a long time, but still cool because unless it cries, it will rip! but you gave me an idea about having a dedicated server just for ripping! I use to extract and then rip on the same pc! But now I'm going to build a machine just for ripping with some parts etc I have laying around. Thanks Unc J.

Handbrake all the way. Way easier, plus more options. I have ripped over 500 DVDs. Liongate only ones I cannot rip, any success with them?

aaaww. So this is why my movies/tv shows didnt come up in plex when I added them and tried out plex a few years ago locally and installed it on my ps3. Always thought that it just that Plex required special naming scheme in order to recognize the file. I didnt know this, thanks for putting up the video. But I also want the movies in their original size. Also thought that plex supports mkv without encode it in x264.

Curious which subtitle settings you have in HB (since you didn't delve into them). I thought I had the right settings, but even though they show as having English subtitles in Plex, when I select it I don't get any of the subtitles to show up while playing. Thanks!

Love the video's! Have you looked at XMedia Recode? I used it with my 1080ti and the h.265/Nvenc encoder and it usually encodes a 30GB BD movie in 20-25 minutes with sizes from 1-5GB and good quality. Keep up the amazing work and Happy New Year sir!

I don't really know,, a 10TB HD cost $169.99 30Gb out of 10,000Gb is than like $0.51 I do not think I would spent the time for my home use,, if you were streaming the films over the internet to a number of end users, it would make sense.

you can use mcebuddy to automate a good amount of this process. also, playon home allows you to record a bunch of streaming content legally using existing laws that allow folks to use DVRs and VCRs. mce buddy not only automates the encoding it will snip out commercials from services like pluto tv and tubi
