For the future you could throw down some ply would or sheet metal that’s strong enough to hold the wait or something so the casters don’t dig into the dirt

Here's a suggestion for cataloging and organizing parts: Sharpie and heavy duty Ziploc bags. Place bolts / small parts for each component in bag and label. It takes extra time on disassembly, but it makes reassembly much, much faster. I used this method for the first time in 1993 when I replaced a frame on a wrecked 1992 Chevy truck. I have been using this method since then. My most recent was converting a 1998 Dodge 12 valve Cummins from 2WD to 4WD - another frame swap. I replaced my old Bluebird engine hoist with the same Harbor Freight hoist because the Bluebird could not lift the 5.9L Cummins and NV4500. Replace the swivel casters at the load end of the hoist with 4" fixed casters. The fixed casters are stronger and they actually make the hoist easier to maneuver. My old Bluebird hoist was built like that.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for the tips! I'm sure you have a ton of small parts with a frame swap! Good call on the castors. Also the hardware supplied by Harbor Freight is generally garbage...the bolts break so easily.
@richardgreenlaw1442
@richardgreenlaw1442 3 жыл бұрын
Build yourself new dirt driveway friendly casters for the engine crane. Also as a suggestion always remove the hood when removing a engine, it's less apt to be nit only in the way but, give you more lifting room. I must say I like your videos.

Don't know if you already know but you can get prefabbed engine brackets specifically for your Cummins swap. That was the route I ended up going even though I could have easily made my own. I just wanted the comfort of knowing that my engine would be lined up perfectly straight with the rest of the driveline
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've seen some pre-fabbed brackets, but I was shocked by the price. My concern (other than price) is that I don't know if they'll line up exactly where I want the engine front-to-back. I have plenty of steel plate on hand, so it'll be easy enough to just make my own and I know I'll get the engine exactly where I want it.
@mechanicmike2858
@mechanicmike2858 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if anyone else has suggested this .. but you should make some metal skids for the wheel area of the engine hoist so it will slide easy on gravel and you could make them removable for inside the garage

Hardly fair to blame HF for a cheap engine lift when you are abusing it that much! Had you bought a balance beam and lifted out properly you would have reduced the stress on it to a more normal level. Even then picking a diesel is on the ragged edge. Common sense when using tools is fairly important. Used improperly you can break the most expensive ones.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
You have a good point, for sure. I was definitely pushing the limits of the tool. Luckily I've since replaced the castors with quality components, so I don't see that issue happening again

Thanks Steve! The speedo might actually be the hardest part of the swap because the GMC has its speed sensor in the transmission, but the Dodge donor truck has the speed sensor in the rear axle, so I'm going to have to figure something out!

Have the same hoist and the same thing happened to me when I did my Cummins swap. I ended up buying a pair of 700lb capacity rigid steel caster wheels and welded them to the bottom on the front of the hoist frame. My swap was a 1987 Chevy V20 4x4 6.2L for a 1996 12 valve P-pump with compound turbos and swapped out my old TH-400 automatic and installed a Dodge NV4500 which mated perfectly to my NP208 transfer case. Rear drive shaft fit perfect and had to have my front lengthened 3.25 inches

Hi Waldo, until you have a nice flat surface to work with, why don’t you build a heavy duty engine hoist with small nematic tyres. I’m sure that you could find some small enough for then to ride under your trucks. Or even one that you could change wheels/tyres of your hoist for different vehicles. Fab channel with great content by the way. 💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 PS or may be a shallow level pit, allowing larger wheel and tyres to ride under your trucks 👍🏻

This truck was designed by GM to compete with the FORD 14,OOO G.V.W. SUPER DUTY truck's. I think they did an outstanding job! You're one lucky dude to actually run across someone scrapping this truck and picking it up the way you did. Lots of Contractor ppl searching for these truck's to avoid getting pinched by the D.O.T. Cops for being overweight, and now your doing this truck one better with this engine swap! " I'd put a dump bed on it myself " or even a flatbed with a hoist under it w/ removable sides. Carriers are meant to be used on a hard surface like concrete. And the engine hoist instructions would say this. Tough to blame harbour freight for the very foreseeable results of using it, AND DRAGGING IT HORIZONTALLY, on dirt. If you didn't have concrete, a strip of steel plate over plywood under the castors would do the job to spread the load and prevent digging into the dirt. User abuse, not design or quality defect this time.
