Rise And Fall Of Twisted Metal Franchise - Is It Dead? Explained In Detail

The gaming geeks in the 90s will surely remember the legacy of the Twisted Metal franchise. The first Twisted Metal game was developed by SingleTrac and published by Sony in 1995. It was a massive commercial success, striking the right chord with audiences. The game utilized aspects that were popular with the youth, and the concept of vehicular combat was loved by everyone. It sold over 11 million copies and made it to the Greatest hits library of PlayStation. The series spanned nine games that were made for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 3. It is hailed as one of the best and longest-running PlayStation-exclusive franchises. This game was made for those who had a desire for destruction. The different installments mostly shared a similar theme, where the playable character would have to participate in the eponymous Twisted Metal competition - basically a crazy demolition derby. The contestants would be competing in some uniquely designed vehicles that could shoot missiles and machine guns to destroy the others. The players had to choose a vehicle and the arena where they wanted to play, then they fight it out with the opposing drivers. There were pick-ups scattered throughout the stage, allowing you to utilize the finest of missiles and landmines against the other drivers. You even had repair stations to regenerate your health, and when the health bar ran too low, you lost! The last one standing would win and the grand prize was a reward from the legendary Calypso. This man lives beneath the streets of Los Angeles the whole year and then holds the competition where he grants the winner anything he desires. There is no limit on the price, size, or even the reality which means that the death combat has a lot at stake!

The story for each character were great short stories. I played through all of the characters so I could see them. And the battle was super hard but so rewarding when you began master it.

I watched this whole video waiting see Twisted Metal Black and it was all of 5 seconds. That game had solid visuals, The Rollingstones Painted Black, and a decent storyline aspect. What a waste of time.

Wait a minute, you sh*t on Twisted Metal Black? Are you freaking serious? That game is one of the BEST Playstation 2 games that I still play. The apocalyptic setting, destructible environments, etc. Plus it had one of the best level design I have ever seen in a video game. On one particular level you start out in a warehouse with is small with a few players mercilessly trying to kill you. Then the doors open and you realize you are actually on a ship with more room on the outer deck to roam. The ship passes under a bridge then dock on the prison island where the entire stage opens up with a massive space and tons of power up. This IS one of the best levels I have ever seen in a video game. This game is gold. And don't forget the 'Paint it Black' theme for the game.

Twisted Metal 4 was my favorite game in the series, plenty of good characters to choose from and unlock, great maps, badass soundtrack, and the ability to create your own car was awesome

Twisted Metal 2 is an all time classic, great memories with that game & my friends! We would have legit tournaments on weekends & many fights would often break out lol 😂 My 2nd favorite was probably Twisted Metal Black. I played the crap outta that as well & personally I thought it was very underrated. I still remember the intro of the game opening up to The Rolling Stones "Paint it Black". Good times!

There’s no way in hell people thought TM4 was the second best it the franchise. The best TM games were clearly number 2 and TM: Black. Both were excellent games and TM: Black legit has a case for the best. The darker tone was outstanding, along with the storylines that weaved throughout for all the characters.

Hopefully! I haven't seen these for myself but people from the community has said that Jaffe posted videos stating that new Twisted Metal games are probably not ever gonna be a thing. Apparently ESP (or maybe just the main man himself) was disappointed by TM PS3's reception and figured that the time for vehicular combat games has passed. I hope the TV series is good and gets high interest. I would love to see a new game especially for PS5. I'd want to see it more in-line with 2/Black/Head-On though. I personally didn't like some of the new mechanics in TM PS3

Too late to bank on the BR hype, the general population is exhausted of BR's & wants something else. Just look at Hyperscape as a perfect example a clean fast paced BR with great controls & pretty decent severs & great gameplay; the game was dead within the year it came out.

TM1: loved it TM2: first one I ever played and still enjoy it till this day. TM3: not perfect but loved the soundtrack that was with it. TM4: Was okay but nothing I wouldn't play TM Black: LOVED IT! love the dark stories, loved the scenery, loved the dark character stories (except minion wish they made his character story better) and the battles was intense. If they did make a movie or TV series this would make a good start. TM PS3: hated it. They took way 12 interesting drivers and replaced them with only 3, there was no tournament like in the past games more like turf wars instead, graphics were nice but didn't make up for the fact it felt like they were trying to go with a more online approach and was using the 3 characters as a means to form groups for online pvp. If they stuck with the 12 drivers and tournament approach I would of loved this game. Honestly I feel that this approach is what drove fans away from the series. As for the other twisted metal games sadly I could never find or afford them so I never got to play them and experience them first hand. Anyways that's my personal opinion on the series.

Tbf for TM PS3, it was supposed to be online-only if rumors are to be trusted. Apparently Jaffe and the development team wanted to keep it a small, digital project but Sony wanted a full-fledged title. Could just be rumors but given the context that the 3 cliques replaced all the drivers, a story that seemed rushed and the trophies mainly focus on online play gives me the feeling that TM PS3 was indeed conceptualized as the smaller, online-only project.

I think the gruesome character of Sweet Tooth should never change. And the same is said for the other characters of the franchise. However I don't think they should go too deep what's the character's but instead have fun with it. Because let's face it a clown with a flaming head, Wizards, warlocks and Psychopaths driving heavily armored and weaponized vehicles.. just isn't very serious is it. As for the game itself I do believe it's timeless. The game is something you can constantly add to, like Mortal Kombat or Tekken. So whether it's next month or 10 years from now. we WILL see another Twisted Metal.

I would love a new Twisted Metal game but this time bring back all the vehicles with their own respected drivers from Twisted Metal 1, 2, 4, Black, Head-on, and the 2012 reboot (the new vehicles introduced in that game will get their own original drivers) return along with the game's original arcade/storymode from the older games and making all the vehicles playable from the start for online multiplayer mode. I think that would be perfect for a reintroduction for Twisted Metal. 🔥🤡🍦🚐☠🏍

Omg so many memories I played the very 1st one on the 1st Playstation, Best strategy is to avoid fighting and stock up ur armament 1st before starting to fight
