Okay so, History lesson! Before this, the former ruler Tetrarch of Palmyra, Septimius Severus Odaenathus ruled over these lands. After the Sassanid Emperor captured Emperor Valerian, Odaenathus was in an interesting position. Rome was weak, the Sassanids were encroaching on his lands. Odaenathus could side with the Sassanids and expel them from the Middle East. However, he remained with them and ambushed them near Antioch and the Northern Levant. He stayed loyal to the Romans and pushed the Sassanids out of Rome. He saved Rome and the new Emperor, Galatius(?) awarded him with countless titles. 'Rector totius orientalis', 'Rex regnum' etc. He, however, remained loyal to Rome, even though he could've crushed them. He allowed them to regain their strength and end the Third Century Crisis. Alas, his wife didn't think the same. Zenobia looked ambitiously at the Roman Empire and when Odaenathus was assassinated she took power and betrayed Rome placing her son as Imperator.

@@Napoleon637 She's known as one of the best warrior queens of all time, I think. She conquered Egypt and half of Anatolia before probably one of the greatest roman general/emperors ever, Aurelian beat her twice in 2 pitched battles. She was captured, sent to Rome and paraded, and secretly killed.
@firstsecond5125
@firstsecond5125 3 жыл бұрын
Rome is considered by some historians to have been behind Odaenathus assassination (probably fearing his power) and may have tried to have had his family killed as well but Zenobia managed to take control of the Palmyra before the assassins found her. She did try to become friends with Rome, even printing coins with the Roman emperors face which was meant as a sign of loyalty. She believed the Roman Empire was too weak to protect all its territory and that a semi independent east under Palmyras control would help protect Rome. She also was sceptical about Roman intentions especially considering that they may have been behind her husband murder (though no one is sure who was responsible). Her invasion of Egypt and Anatolia was after Rome attempted, but failed, to invade Syria. Roman politicians, most famously Aurelius, wanted to restore Roman might and having a ‘foreign’ queen in charge of the east was seen as unacceptable (Palmyra was so respected in Rome for its loyalty and riches that it’s citizens were treated as equals to the Romans most of the time so they weren’t foreigners in the traditional sense). Zenobia only declared Palmyra independent after Rome invaded. She was ambitious but not suicidal, she wouldn’t have dared get on the wrong side of Rome. It was Rome that forced Zenobia to rebel, not her ambition.

I liked the cinematic replay of your own campaign battle- for large scale. you appreciate and don't miss any of the large events in the battle, you're not as distracted by micro and can narrate it! (as you've already played it out). Definitely do the small battles as they are- easy to follow and no missed action.

The idea of battle replay is great, Apollo. Basically it gives you the opportunity to show us the battle more prominently and for us it's more enjoyable since we're not stuck with too much of back and forth of your battle controls. Please do more of battle replays in campaigns.

"Yet his legacy lives on" Goddamn! No it F*** did not! I do not like Palmyra. It was set up by the wife of Odaenathus who fought for Rome in trying to fend off invaders and regain the Eastern part of Rome. He succeeded and made the Eastern region a superpower. The local people(and his wife) wanted him to be emperor. But he refused because he was loyal to Rome and fought to preserve its strength. Then after Odaenathus died by assassination, his wife went and destroyed all his legacy and the very reason why he fought for years. She claimed power and separated from Rome just to have Palmyra fall 3 years later. Goddamn that just makes me pissed. I can't cheer for you Pixie! You are playing for this disgusting kingdom :P

Odaenathus calling himself the "King of Kings" was more a shot at the Persian ruler's title rather than a serious title. He repeatedly refused to take the emperorship despite many trying to push it upon him. Really should look up the Extra History on him, as it shows he had no actual ambitions beyond protecting the Empire. Queen Zenobia on the other hand... that's a bit more tricky.
