This song saved me from ending it all back in 2018 and was a motivating factor to keep going. Whenever things got dark I would throw it on and move forward hoping for the best. Fast forward 4 years to 2 days ago I was just listening to this at work and the lyrics "Nothing matters when the pain is all but gone. When you're finally awake, despite the overwhelming odds tomorrow came. And when the see you crack a smile and you decide to stay awhile you'll be ready then to laugh again" I realized how far Ive come since that night and that my tomorrow has come. The truth in this song speaks of experience and its something I cant properly put into words. Thank you guys for being the soundtrack for my life since I was 12. Im 24 now and never stopped listening.

Lyrics "On the edges of the sharpest knives In the middle of the darkest nights Always knew that I would find you here In a puddle of the bravest tears I've seen enough to know it's lonely where you are Above the crowd, feet dangling from a rooftop She waits from ledges for a voice to talk her down And nothing matters but the pain when you're alone The never-ending nights when you're awake When you're praying that tomorrow it's ok There will be a time to crack another smile Maybe not today or for awhile But we're holding on to laugh again someday To laugh again someday All that matters is the time we had Doesn't matter how it all went bad Never wonder what it might be like Shut the door, say goodbye When faced with tragedy We come alive or come undone So don't look back, let it shape you like an ocean Even the deepest scars in time will fade And nothing matters but the pain when you're alone The never-ending nights when you're awake When you're praying that tomorrow it's ok There will be a time to crack another smile Maybe not today or for awhile But we're holding on to laugh again someday Now we're holding on to laugh again someday And sometimes you have to go back To know just where you have been But we're old enough to know that What has been will be again and again And the bravest of faces Are the ones where we fake it In the roles that we play Nothing matters when the pain is all but gone When you are finally awake Despite the overwhelming odds tomorrow came And when they see you crack a smile And you decide to stay awhile You'll be ready then to laugh again And nothing matters but the pain (We are tragedy, yeah, we are sympathy) And nothing matters but the pain (you see what you want to see) And nothing matter but the pain (We are misery and distant memories) And nothing matters but the pain (but we all learn to laugh again) Yeah, we all learn to laugh again Oh, we all learn to laugh again."

This song has an extremely special meaning to me, I love it so much. My university offers this retreat that normally I would never have gone on. I’ve suffered from MDD since I was four and have never felt like a part of anything. My sophomore year I had finally decided I couldn’t go on any longer. As part of my bucket list I asked a friend of mine from college to go to a concert with me (it was 10 Years and Red... I normally would’ve gone to a much heavier show since that kinda music is basically my trademark but I wanted to do something with him before I ended things so I chose bands that were more accessible to the average listener). We went and he pestered me about going on the retreat (he went the year before). I would’ve never gone but I figured I could humor him since he went to the concert with me. Turns out he was part of the team leading it and throughout the week I genuinely started to feel like maybe I could be accepted a little bit. I began to make connections and feel like I had real relationships for once in my life, who accepted me for me. The following year I applied to lead and was chosen. As part of the retreat, I told my story (stuff I had never shared with anyone) and as part of the retreat, the team members that are leading all pick a song and everyone attending gets a CD with all the songs on it. They are typically songs that are meant to uplift or get people through tough spots and are meaningful to the team leader. I chose That’s Just Life by Memphis May Fire because it went along with my story. The following year I was fortunate enough to be able to apply to be a head leader because this retreat had literally saved my life and then a year later redefined it yet again. there are only 2 head leaders so it’s extremely competitive, and it was my last chance being able to do it (you can only go once, lead as a team leader once (after having gone as a retreatant), and lead as a head leader once (after being a team leader). So the chances I would get to go 3 times total was extremely small. But I ended up being chosen and this third time around, my life finally completed its turnaround from the person I had been just a few years prior. This song was the song I chose for my time as head leader, and it will always be so closely tied to those memories that it will always mean the world to me. My bad days have gotten fewer over time, but they still happen, so when they do, I throw this song on and remember how much progress I’ve made and how far I’ve come and all the people along the way, and I’m able to get through it by doing that :)

Needless to say, my entire High School got this album for that song, and were swiftly disappointed in the CD when they realized how different the music was. Just a funny story on how times change. Back then, they were too heavy, and now it seems like people are complaining they're too soft. Soft? Heavy? It doesn't matter to me. This is poetry. This is meaning. And this is damn good music.

Tim has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard
@325spoon9 жыл бұрын
this song is one of the best songs they've recorded imo. its different from their usual fast tempo jams (which i love but still). this song comes off as a different twist on a message they want to spread and honestly i think they do a pretty good job conveying it.

this album really feels like poems that were put together and sung beautifully. the poems have meaning whether it's bad, good or just one big metaphor for life they are great. this is up there with my favorite albums by them. I do not care if it's soft, hard, or sounds kinda pop-ish this is art. also for the people saying Tim has lost his voice: no he hasn't he has a goddamn great voice even though it maybe different then what it sounded like before.

I had the privilege of seeing Rise Against live when I was 16 years old and now I'm 25 and they still remain my favourite band, I've seen a lot of critiques about their musical direction but just like people, they grow too as does my love for them. Thank you Rise Against for keeping real music alive 💕

On the edges of the sharpest knives In the middle of the darkest nights Always knew that I would find you here In a puddle of the bravest tears I've seen enough to know it's lonely where you are Above the crowd, feet dangling from a rooftop She waits from ledges for a voice to talk her down And nothing matters but the pain when you're alone The never-ending nights when you're awake When you're praying that tomorrow it's ok There will be a time to crack another smile Maybe not today or for awhile But we're holding on to laugh again someday To laugh again someday All that matters is the time we had Doesn't matter how it all went bad Never wonder what it might be like Shut the door, say goodbye When faced with tragedy We come alive or come undone So don't look back, let it shape you like an ocean Even the deepest scars in time will fade And nothing matters but the pain when you're alone The never-ending nights when you're awake When you're praying that tomorrow it's ok There will be a time to crack another smile Maybe not today or for awhile But we're holding on to laugh again someday Now we're holding on to laugh again someday And sometimes you have to go back To know just where you have been But we're old enough to know that What has been will be again and again And the bravest of faces Are the ones where we fake it In the roles that we play Nothing matters when the pain is all but gone When you are finally awake Despite the overwhelming odds tomorrow came And when they see you crack a smile And you decide to stay awhile You'll be ready then to laugh again And nothing matters but the pain (We are tragedy, yeah, we are sympathy) And nothing matters but the pain (you see what you want to see) And nothing matter but the pain (We are misery and distant memories) And nothing matters but the pain (but we all learn to laugh again) Yeah, we all learn to laugh again Oh, we all learn to laugh again

So don't hold back Let it shape you like an ocean Even the deepest scars in time will fade. This is possibly my favourite Rise Against track and definitely one of their best. Fantastic message and lyrics. Not to mention that it sounds absolutely awesome as well. By the way, the woman in the video is the same one who is on the The Black Market album cover. Her name is Danielle Victoria Perry.

Sour Potato I agree. They kinda just kept going to the same few sets of shots and didnt tell a story at all. I was hoping it was gonna have some turning point, but it never did. Been a huge rise against fan for the last decade and I'd say this was the least effort ive seen out of them to make a music video.

yeah... they should make another version of it, because this song has a really good potential to tell a short story.. this is something you make in 2 hours tops. Plus, I was at least hoping that the final part would be a part where everything is enlightened and the strobe stops with epileptic attacks.. It would make perfect sense though ( song wise ).

I will never forget that. especially the bridge: "and when they see you crack a smile and you decide to stay alive." makes me cry.

Sebastian Pacheco it's a shame that music from the rock, punk, and metal genre don't get the attention they deserve. For example this, this deserve waaay more views than what it has, people just don't seem to appreciate good music any more

Great song. Gotta love artists that put meaning in their songs instead of endless garbage about teenage sex. Wish the rest of the world would wake up and realize where the real music is. This song gives me so much hope that someday I'll wake up and the pain I feel everyday will be gone and everything will be okay, like it once was.

I'm a long time Rise Against fan and I can understand the story they are telling by following this video after "Don't Want To Be Here Anymore", it's a song of uprising out of the dark and healing, so it makes sense. Video could've been a bit better but I could watch them all day so these guys never disappoint me. Keep up the good work Rise Against! Your lyrics are poetic emotion and are a beacon in times of turmoil xxx

I am one of the biggest Rise Against Fans out there and if a video is great I love it and if it is not good, then so what. I don't care as long as the music is good, inspires me, offers me new perspectives, or helps me to go trough hard times, because in the end that's what RA to me is all about!
