I can not believe I understood almost everything you say! It's almost a miracle! Thank you very much for this video!
Same! Every now and then I had to pause for a short break to process what he just said but I didn't have to rewind or even activate auto-generated subtitles :D That's a huge confidence boost! And tbh I somehow found the 2nd version easier to understand (probably because I already had an idea of what he was going to say, so I could concentrate more on the grammar than on the semantics :'D)

With Kanji it’s best not to think of them as 2000+ different Kanji that you need to memorize. Rather, it’s about 200 radicals... arranged differently. Think about English. There may only be 52 symbols in the language (26 letters upper and lower) but there are way more combinations. Sh, Ch, th, thr, ou, ai, ea, oa, oi, ly, wh, kn, etc. These are all distinct sounds and inconsistently applied. Also remember that your brain doesn’t actually memorize words as letters, but As WHOLE WORDS. This is just like kanji. As you read this paragraph your brain picked out the wordforms and compared them words it knew already. That’s why you can easily spot all teh typos and yet stil be albe to raed the sentence. Your brain does an approximation match with a word picture it knows. This is no different than a Japanese brain. It does an approximation and can pick out kanji even if it isn’t 100% correct. It’s also why sometimes they can’t remember how to write a Kanji. Kanji is NO more difficult than other aspects of the language.

that's why I don't remember radicals, but vocabulary instead. Radicals don't usually have a set sound, words have readings that won't change tho (not like english). So I learn kanji by learning their places or uses in or as of words.

Thank you for the beautiful explanation. This is exactly what I’m noticing as well, and I am only 2 weeks in. I’m hunting for the best methods of learning and retaining the joyo kanji and I think I now have a legit plan of action. There are some people in the comments that are being complete Debby downers 🙁. And come to find out, they have been learning for over 8 years and still haven’t attempted to learn all of the kanji, but they feel like they have the right to complain even though they haven’t and still aren’t really trying.

The way he speaks is clear and he uses easy words and repeats them to get us to the meaning. What I understood is that Japanese people take a long time to learn Kanji by writing it a lot and Sambon hates that, obviously. He also said that even after finishing school, some people can't even write their names. That's half sarcastic, I guess but it also emphasizes the fact that Kanji can be easily forgotten. There are also many kanji that people can't read or write and he says that it's normal.

Thank you for your videos, they are clear and helpful. Personally I found it more useful to memorize words rather than individual kanji. Japanese people learn individual kanji in school because they already know the spoken language from childhood, but foreigners need a context for the kanji to be able to memorize them effectively, which is why I think it's better to remember them as parts of words. For example, instead of memorizing the meaning of 複, which has a rather abstract meaning by itself, it's better to memorize words like 複雑、複製, etc. to be able to place the kanji in a certain context of meaning.
@sayamqazi2 жыл бұрын
It is orders of magnitude easier to learn a kanji if you know the word properly. Too many people directly try to learn kanji and their brain is overwhelmed with sound + shape + meaning.

I seem to be the opposite of most commentators! I have less difficulty than most , it seems, in learning Kanji. I dismantle, then re-assemble using the radicals . BUT, despite my linguistic background ; I speak English, French, German, Italian, and used to be quite good at Hindi and Tibetan.., I find it very, very difficult to follow spoken Japanese. This site is one of the clearest I have come across, but still I struggle. I score about 95% in the JLPT5 tests I have found on line EXCEPT for the listening comprehension on which I score very low! I shall persevere here, because at least I recognize a fair portion of the language you use. For which - many thanks.

Oh my god i feel so blessed ! I can clearly understand what he's saying *well not everything but i understand the meaning* ! I wish Japanese teaching channels do the same thing ! It's really not helpful to learn Japanese from an English speaker *who is probably Japanese* ! When i used to learn English from arabic/french channels i clearly didn't make that big of progress but i became so good after starting to watch actual english people teaching English ! That's how language lessons in my country work *at the public school* ! The teacher will try their best not to talk in arabic unless it's very much needed !

I'm studying to pass the JLPT N4 exam this December and we just finished studying N5 and will be starting N4 next week but... i am so proud of myself because i understand everything you said 😭😭😭 Yes, Kanji is soooo hard and i'm so stressed every time we have test about it. We memorize 12 new characters every lesson yet we have to memorize and learn the examples as well, so our Kanji test is always 50 or more characters. We also include vocabs everytime we have Kanji test so it's like 130/140 item test. Earlier i just finished a 500 item test and i seriously was about to have a mental breakdown lol But i'll do my best 😭

漢字の勉強とアメリカの単語の勉強はだいたい同じだと思います。高校生になる時、難しい単語の宿題を自分でやって、全部の言葉の試験を受ける。あの言葉あまり使わないから、ほとんど忘れますww 面白いね The was you guys learn kanji is kind of like how we learn vocabulary and spelling. Once we get to high school, we have vocabulary words we have to study on our own and then we have a test on all of them. We also forget these words cause we don’t use a lot of them lol ビデオを作ってくれてありがとうね!
