My grandfather worked in the mines in Glacé Bay. This song gives me the shivers. I can imagine him all those years ago, working underground. I’m proud of him.

Today is my dad's birthday in heaven, he died drinking and driving on my 16th birthday and this was his favorite song, so im here crying listening to this wishing that his disease of alcoholism didn't kill him, my mums up in heaven with him as well. My heart is hurting so bad today. On a brighter note, I remember him listening to this and watching her on TV specials sometimes and he would say "mam oh man, she's all woman, beautiful woman" lol. God bless you always dad. I love you.

This song really resonates with me, as I worked underground in the early 70's and was once trapped in a cave-in for 30 hours with 8 other men. Luckily no casualties. But ,I'm in my 70's now and the nightmares still haunt me to this day. So much so, that I've opted to be cremated rather than buried when my time is up.

I worked in the coal mines in Yorkshire, in the 70’s and 80’s when conditions were a lot better, but still a dangerous environment to work in. Whenever I hear this song, it brings a lump to my throat like a cricket ball, and I find it hard to hold back the tears. All miners are the salt of the earth and were like one big family. I’m now in my seventies. Love this song.

Anyone still listening to this wonderful song in 2020? It always brings tears to my eyes at the thought of the young kids that were forced to work there

Things were different decades ago. Many kids wanted to work. My grandfather left school under 10 years old to work. Many did that. As far as mines were concerned it certainly lowered life expectancy as lung cancer was common among coal miners back in the day. This country is built on hard work as well as suffering by a lot of people.

@@dropsosense1506 “many kids wanted to work.” - you do realize they were influenced or forced right? Lol given the choice a kid doesn’t go underground to mine coal unless they are “brainwashed” by only having heroes that are miners lol. I live in a coal town now and Dad still works at the mine.

My grandad was 16 when he left to fight in ww2 he watched his 3 brothers ship blown up and sank, he was then taken a pow in burma, he weighed 7 stone when he returned. After regaining his health he started down the mines for many years until he lost a lung due to the conditions of the pits. He died at the age of 62. People complain of how hard life is some of them need to have a look back and see what these men went through May God bless them all

One of my eternal memories is walking up through Cinderford and there was an old retired miner walking up the hill. He would take about 20 steps and stop to use his oxygen bottle for his next few steps. Can still see him now in my minds eye. The men on my mothers side were mostly miners (Northern United) but they all died young.

My girlfriend Cleo (Angeline Poantimuli) from the Tiwi Islands, NT Australia, back in the late 80's was playing this song on tape one day with family in Darwin when I visited, and I told her I liked it. Soon after she bought me the tape and I still have it. In fact my 19yr old son loves all my old songs and he learned this song as a little one from hearing me play it. A few minutes ago he was going through a box of my old tapes and came across it. The tape quality is pretty crook, so I put it on here. Sadly Cleo died in ICU interstate after her 2nd kidney transplant some years ago. Miss you my friend.
