A day like today but 1941, He was born in Pacoima, Los Angeles, California, United States. Richard Steven Valenzuela Reyes, better known by the pseudonym Ritchie Valens, who was a Chicano (Son of Mexican Parents) musician, singer and guitarist. Although his Valens career lasted only eight months, he became one of the pioneers of Rock & Roll and also the precursor of rock movement, so much so that he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Happy 80 years Ritchie!... And once again, grateful for such extraordinary work that you have done to one of the great Rock & Roll Pioneers proudly with Mexican roots and a way to grasp this legacy that he has left us for prosperity are these beautiful songs and that with a touch that you have given them, you give them a unique essence that will undoubtedly last forever ... We will share these topics on our On Line Radio. Receive a congratulation and a cordial greeting from Mexico City.

Gosh, thank you so much for those very kind words Volk's Freunde! Ritchie's musical legacy (including un-finished demos) definitely lives on. I've been upgrading my music room recently & will be starting work on his other demos (I have a brilliant idea for the video, can't say too much at the moment!). Best wishes to you (& your online radio listeners) from the UK. And a belated Happy Birthday to Ritchie - "Let's Rock 'n' Roll !"

It's a horrible shame Ritchie died so young. He was exploding with talent people can only dream of. An excellent ranchero/blues guitarist with an angellic tenor voice, caressing those words like velvet. No one will ever mix Latin and Blues exactly like he did or play or sing like he did. There will only ever be one Ritchie Valens. He deserved better than the ending he got. Especially a nice young man like himself, who did everything he could to support and take care of his family. Rest in peace Ritchie. Keep on rocking. P.S. - The man with the bass on the right in the photo at 2:20 is Waylon Jennings. He, Tommy Allsup and Carl Bunch (when he wasn't stuck in the hospital with frostbitten feet) backed up the all of acts on the Winter Dance Party, not just Buddy Holly.

Accidentally found the film ,, La Bamba ,, in the archive. What movie!!! What a singer! Such a tragic fate on the rise. An era that is gone and will never be again. I think he would have reached the level of Elvis Presley. God gave him everything. Ridiculous death.

This song by Ritchie is such a lost and overlooked gem and it's a shame he was taken so young. I think this would've easily been as big as Donna and dare I say better? It's a very haunting song too because of the tragedy that happened. Really love what you have done to this should've and could've been classic Ritchie demo.

Thank you Jason, really appreciated! I've still got to finish some more demos of Ritchie's. Hopefully will find new cine film to accompany them too.

Thank you so much for this! I find it heartbreaking how this young man vanished so soon, a legacy stolen, seemingly forgotten. This is such a wonderful way of reviving his impactful music. The accompaniment is hauntingly beautiful and suits the song so well.

Hi again, I have watched this beautiful video over and over and over ......it is a magical video when you added the videos from Ritchies era, the 1950’s ..with the actual 1950’s cars and buildings Ritchie would have lived with . AFTER Ritchie died , his manager Bob Keane released Ritchies second LP, titled RITCHIE” . Mr. Keane narrates that many of the songs....including the one you used here...were “ ideas” and workings for new songs. There is magic in these “ unfinished” songs where it is only Ritchies wonderful voice and his guitar .......that you hear...as if you were right there in the room with him. I WOULD ASK if you could please do to all those other “ unfinished” recordings and do to them what you did here. WE ALL know that all singers recordings are “ fixed up” in the studio by sound engineers....like what you did here . I think Bob Keane would be very supportive if you did that. I have corresponded with Ms. Beverly Mendheim ( who posted her views ) who is the splendid author of a very wonderful book on Ritchie . She felt the violins overshadowed Ritchies guitar. With all due respect with her views, I myself really love the violins, and think they create a very heavenly and classical sound to this so beautiful voice of this song. Thank you very much ...Louis velasquez

OMGosh thank you for that portervillelouis - it's comments like this that make everything worthwhile! Yes, I specifically chose these cinefilm clips (circa 1955-1958) as they are areas near to where GoldStar / Bob Keane's studio was - Ritchie will definitely have seen this I'm sure! With regards to all those un-finished demos... I'm currently trying to get my hearing a bit better but will be starting again very soon on the next RV demo (currently retitled to "Dance, Dance, Dance" - I keep hearing this, hence new title!). Finally, ah yes, it's good we all have different views on how Ritchie's music should sound - I might even try some Doo-Wop vocals on that other Ritchie Valens demo in the future! (it's just an idea at the moment). In the meantime, thank you again Louis. I shall be listening again to all of Ritchie's demos for inspiration & sincerely hoping Hi-Tone 1958 releases more fantastic songs - a truly amazing RV vocalist & performer! Kind Regards, Rae ('Ravien' formerly Tone Fury - I got bored of that name!).

As the author of the book, RITCHIE VALENS, FIRST LATINO ROCKER, I've always imagined NOW YOU'RE GONE and MY DARLIN'S GONE, as more of a Doo-Wop sound with rich background harmonies. The violins tend to shut out Ritchie's guitar sounds.
@RavienUK
@RavienUK 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, unfortunately I'm not a singer & wanted to keep Ritchie's vocals as clear as possible. This was just my interpretation with very limited equipment. Maybe somebody else could try a version you describe? Have a listen to Hi-Tone 1958 - he really is uncannily like Ritchie (I'm a subscriber)

Nice production, Rockdale. Valens is pitchy on the vocal track but his voice quality comes through. I bet Bob Keane would have made him sing it 100 times until the vocal was perfect. I can imagine a major hit!

Definitely not AI, it is Ritchie Valens singing ! This was an un-released demo recorded by Bob Keane (Ritchie's recording manager at the time). I just added other instruments & played along / enhanced the demo etc. I still have other un-finished demos I started but unsure if I'll ever finish them (severe hearing loss now).

Thank you Elliott, very kind of you. Maybe one day I'll finish them (I've re-titled one un-finished demo to "Dance, Dance, Dance !"). It's a bit tricky though as Ritchie increases the tempo as he gets more confident with his song. I'll try & have something ready for Feb 2025 (or sooner!). Thanks again!
