River Runs Through Japan

【English subtitles available】
In rural areas of Japan, organizations that protect the fishery resources of rivers and conserve the environment are aging, and the continuation of their activities is in doubt. Kensaku Urakami, who was born and raised in Kamikawa town, Hyogo, works with volunteer anglers to protect the Ichikawa River that flows through his hometown. His activities are now successful, and he has the support of many fly fishermen all over Japan.

Looking back at history, silver mining was actively carried out in the upper reaches of this river from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. As a result, heavy metals flowed into the river, polluting it. Eventually the mines were closed, and now, several decades later, the safety of the river's water quality has been confirmed by a national agency. Their activities are aimed at breathing new life into this river that no one has paid any attention to, and making everyone familiar with and cherish it. Because the water temperature in this basin is a severe environment for native Japanese trout species to settle in, they decided to release rainbow trout, taking into account the opinions of experts and with the permission of the local government. There are pros and cons to this measure, but the background to this is that this is an environment where even native species did not originally live.

Loved this! I'm a beginner fly fisherman in Colorado, USA, started a couple years ago and love the constant learning! Indeed, the rivers must be kept alive and outdoors sports to teach the respect and love of it all.

There is something magical about the way the Japanese approach fly fishing. Bamboo rods, Peerless and Hardy reels, dry fly fishing only, old school apparel, and the amount of effort they put in to catch trout is admirable and very respectful to the sport. I have been lucky enough to fly fish Japan many times and each time it was memorable. From popular spots like Chuzenji, to remote places in Niigata or Hokkaido, I always appreciate the experience, the beauty, and the hospitality.

I love fishing, I love the outdoors. Nature are meant to be enjoy and cherish, nature is beautiful but it just a reflection of something greater. In the grand scheme of things this is just a distraction getting to somewhere bigger. We should remember that fishing is just a hobby not the main focus, that applies to everything in life in general. Like the season, everything age and change, everything don’t last forever. Everything will disappear but there’s a distinctual truth that doesn’t, to spend a lifetime on something that wasn’t meant to be the main focus, that I feel like it’s such a wasted to make something insignificant your purpose in life it’s such a wasted and you’re missing the bigger picture.

Here in Brazil, Japan has always been known for its organization, civility and discipline. You don't need to worry so much about protecting your rivers, but religiously protect these unique aspects of Japanese culture and way of life. Protect the trunk of this tree, protect your country from the bad influences of Western progressivism, importing only good things from there. Or, even from bad domestic influences, which outrage and vilify your good manners in the streets. Protect your borders wisely, and everything else (the branches of this tree) will forever be protected by reflex. 👍
