Rivers is the type of artist I admire the most. He doesn't care about the industry and business bullshit, he just does his thing, which is creating music he're comfortable with and putting it out there for people to hear it. Whether it gets successful or not, he goes back to the shack to work on new stuff.
@eclecticmuso8 жыл бұрын
+Mladen T Well that's true to an extent but he's also extremely self-conscious and can become somewhat defensive at times, which is understandable considering music is such a personal expression unique to the individuals who produce it. If you look at the trajectory of the albums in weezer's career, you notice that most if not all of the albums were attempts at rectifying problems either critically, sales-wise, or problems the band felt needed to be addressed from the album before it. So to an extent the critics, sales, fans and detractors all have an external influence on the creation of the music even if it's not completely apparent initially...
@mladent14648 жыл бұрын
Those are some very good points. Thoug I'm not sure if it came to rectifying because he himself didn't feel like he was on the right track or to please the critics and boost sales.
@eclecticmuso8 жыл бұрын
Mladen T A bit of both really, after Pinkerton failed commercially the Green album was an attempt to recapture fans and the Blue vibe, it worked to an extent but the complaints were that the album was too safe, so Maladroit was an attempt to inject variety to the sound, however the complaints were that it was inconsistent and lacking a personal quality, which Make Believe tried to address, complaints with that album was that while it was emotional it was somewhat insincere and stale. The Red album was an attempt to again experiment and add variety to their sound that ultimately backfired as the album was unfocused and experimental for the sake of experimental. Raditude again tried to streamline the sound, well no need to explain what was wrong about raditude, it was barely a weezer album with all the hack guests and "professional" songwriters writing everything, not to mention Pat didn't feel like playing the drums mostly. Hurley tried to redeem weezer but the damage was already done and the album was too safe and was a rushed unpolished mess. Then Ewbaite happened which was a focused effort at rebooting the classic weezer sound with a modern edge, the album was balanced, took a few risks, and was well produced and you could see the effort and time they put into it. Furthermore, the White album continues this upward trend and I'm stoked that weezer are just being weezer right now, and done with pandering to fans, critics etc.
@mladent14648 жыл бұрын
That summed up the last 20 years of Weezer perfectly. What an interesting discography they have.

Rivers is a great example of how serious low self esteem is. No matter how many people love him and so many of us absolutely adore him. I know plenty of gorgeous women that would love to be with him. Women throw themselves at him and he still has self esteem issues. On a positive note....that is in part what makes him so endearing. Others in his situation get cocky and entitled and turn people off. Rivers (such as others that get cocky) earn love for what ever it is that inspires people. So Rivers got that love initially for writing music that influences millions and then he gets tons of more love because his character. People with low self esteem actually have very admirable and positive qualities. It is humility and being humble as well as respect, love, and a desire to connect with your fellow human beings that makes you feel inferior. It isn't necessarily about feeling inferior...it is the lack of feeling superior.

He really is a genuine guy. Around 2008 I was having a pretty bad time being mobbed and defamed after a close friend destroyed our band and herself, and I wrote to him on Myspace asking how he handles those kinds of bad vibes. He wrote back and was really supportive. I had no friends at the time, which I took pretty hard. He treated me exactly the way that I treat people who are feeling down. It was really nice of him, because I didn't want to bother him, but he understood that. Everything he writes is really who he is, and when EWBAITE was released, every song underscored what was happening in my life at that time as well. For a pop artist Rivers is really in there and knows what people need to hear sometimes.
