Just some essential background. Maria is her baptismal name so she was directly addressing herself. Hwasa said this is an upbeat but emtional song and that she cried when singing the chorus. The lines especially "Maria Maria These words are for you" " Why are you struggling, you are already beautiful". She is basically consoling herself after all the hate she received and continues to receive til this day (ugh) and she's basically written her whole self into this song so it hits quite deep when reading the lyrics despite how much of a bop it is. She was also injured these promotions so could only perform for abour 4 days but despite short promotions her achievements with this album (def check out the rest of the tracks one of the best albums ever) are phenomenal. No.1 US itunes chart (first for a female Korean solo ever) and No.1 on Worldwide Albums Charts. She's been a stable no.2 hit on Korean charts til now and has still winning 4 music shows weeks and weeks later after her promotions ended. Not to mention Maria on Tiktok is one of the biggest hits in China now. To touch on what dizz was saying how hwasa's mv looking like which im assuming thier talking about chungha's Play mv, makes sense but technically it's the other way around. Hwasa's Maria mv came out on June 29th while Chungha's Play didn't come out until July 6th, so I'm assuming the similarities between the 2 girls looks and concept was just a coincidence. Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics. Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude. In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors. Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone. The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages. We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting. The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly. And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together. The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life. With this album Hwasa became the first Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US. 'Maria' went viral in China and is still burning on the biggest music chart, plus after almost 2 months is still 2nd on iChart in South Korea (a chart about the overall positionon major charts of the nation). She co-wrote and co-composed 5 songs out of 7 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always.

In case you didn't know, Hwasa & Chungha are good friends and they collaborated on an award show dance performance last year. Here are the obvious flaws with the comparison of Maria and Play: * Maria was released on June 29; Play was released on July 6. Neither girl was copying the other. * Just because they each ate an apple doesn't make Sleeping Beauty like Eve. Here are some suggestions and things to think about that you may find helpful: Since nobody disagreed with Dizz it seems like you all missed the point of the things mentioned as comparisons. Chungha and Hwasa's use of red hair, milk bath and latin pop were completely different. Unlike their single, straightforward use or value in Play, each item has a symbolic flip side in the Maria MV: Red Hair vs Black Hair; Milk Bath vs Blood Bath; Latin in the bridge section vs the genre blend in the rest of the song. Maria is a very complex MV and nobody could be expected to figure it out on the first view but try to put the Chungha associations aside when you go back and watch it again. If you want a shortcut, David Kim's DKDK-TV explanation video of Maria and LMM (another song from Hwasa's new album) helps with the Korean language and cultural aspects of the song and he gives thorough and detailed interpretations that you'll find thought provoking even if you disagree with his theories.

Our beloved Hwasa got a sprained back from practicing the dance for this, and she performed the Maria stages while in immense pain, but did it with so much professionalism that it doesn’t seem she’s really hurt while dancing and singing. Love you Hwasa and Riverse!🥰🥰🥰

Hwasa injured her back (she had a Herniated disc) before the comeback was released, during rehearsals at the part where she dances with the male dancer at 5:12. As a result, she was in pain while she performed the song live, and even had to take pain killers. Monroe the male dancer with long hair, his ig is @_e.jo, him and another one of the male backup dancers in Maria are apart of an all male dance crew, their ig is @team_eoddae
