A bit late for this party but I do agree. I have found over the years more and more people "have to have their say" on what I want to do/achieve. They demand me to quantify why I am doing something and then feel the need to then complain more. It's all about them and not what I want. It's my hobby and I want to do it this way but no, the person who has no interest in my hobby seems fit to make the decisions on my behalf and then strops when I don't want to do it their way. Keyboard warriors as so mean just for the sake of being able to be mean. They have to pick holes. Just look at the number of people who dislike a video on youtube. No one is forcing them to watch the video but they feel compelled out of spit to dislike it and then make horrible comments wheras they should get on with their life and not worry about some random person they have never met making a video. Perhaps the Chinese have the right way to moderate the social media by making everyone use their real names and being held accountable for their comments/actions. Simple thing is if you don't like something then just move on in your life and find something you do enjoy, like watching Charlie's Videos :-)

@@ChadwickModelRailway I'm watching al lot of videos for the second time, i want to find out how you came to your current layout (track plan) and the words rivet couters got my attention. I know them also, curves must be at least 2 meter radius and so on. Maybe it's be a good moment for me to start me own chanel. I was building a layout based on a prototypical modular layout , a branchline station with just 2 tracks and platforms from about 2.2 meter, the station module was 3,6m long. I was going to add on each side an entry block of 2,7m. I had an other terminal station (5.4m 1 platform for pasengers) half buid and waiting to be completed for 11 years. My wife asked me with my degrading back, arthrosis how I would manage it to get it every summer in our garage in the garden (i'm going to my 60's and my father (94y) in law his back is in better then mine). So I'm going to tear it all down and see what I still can use of it. The most painful part is I have to dismantel a large part of my 4m long steamloco depot I keep the roundhous with 18 doors and the turntable. Now i'm going to build a fixed layout on the small attic based on a layout published in MIBA, a German magazine. Far from prototypical but the most important part of our hobby is to have fun, the way we like it, and not a project to someone else vision/expectation. I love you chanel because it's so recognisable. You show also your mistakes, your toughts, when you make mistakes an tells afterwards what you solution is, that is very strong! From mistakes we make we learn the most I'm very grateful I'll can watch your chanel and learn from it. I'm working with Märklin (I got my train when I was 3 years old, and both my own steamloco when I was 7, did I know a real train had no pickups on the sleepers ;-) ) My feedbacks and the control of switched and signals will be controled over loconet (locohdl.synology.me/ Hans, thé owner of this site/shop is a friend and he build a highly flexible system thé he now shares with thé world) and my old Uhlenbrock Intellibox. Not perfect but I'm happy and sometimes I try stuff as upgrading a BR50 as a challenge just as I saw on sebs1/87 and other fine youtube channel. I just want to say leave the rivets where they are. I'ts a pitty for.thrm that they can't see the beauty in your story, it is such a source of inspiration. Kind greetings, Frank

A guy that owned a hobby shop told me something that has always stuck in my head. "If a rivet counter starts telling you what you can and can't run on your layout, just reply to him 'If it truely worries you what i run on my layout, then how about you buy me what i should be running'". And to this day ive used that response twice.

That’s exactly what I use to tell people if they lecture me on what’s wrong about my Beetle. Don‘t like the wheels or the colour? Parts x, y, z are not period correct? Headlamps are aftermarket, not genuine VW? Just write a cheque, and I will gladly change it just for You. Sometimes, I even offer a little brass badge with the donor‘s name on it on the lid of the glovebox. No donations offered till this day, though 😁.

Back in the 70s there were two societies devoted to modelling to exacting standards that were so much at odds over those standards that one of them had a sign on their exhibition stand declaring they would not sell their products to members of the other one. How stupid is that.

What made me get back into the railway hobby after a long break of making plastic model kits was finding a stash of locos me and my grandfather put away when i was around 7 or 8 (im now 15) we cleared out a cupboard and found them and it revitalised my passion of trains and have been recently been watching over your videos and has provided me many hours of interest and learning through lockdown (btw i found some class 43’s in rail-freight livery and a few steam trains which is odd) redoing my layout as of now in a U shape in the spare bedroom at my grandfathers house, thank you for the videos, Regards Elliott

I am an aircraft engineer by trade, I love aviation and have done since my earliest memory. My Son was born and I looked forward to sharing my love of all things flying with him. To my horror he quickly showed a total disinterest in aircraft but a deep connection with railways. I threw myself into learning all I could about railways so I could indulge his passion and in due course developed a passion of my own. Inevitably a model railway was required. I worked for a time many years ago for the Canadian Government as a model maker and set aside a spare 18 foot by 6 foot space for a detailed set in 00. Engine and stock procurement is up to my five year old, I just try to make things work. The first thing to go was exact scale because we needed Heavy Challengers running along side GWR 57XX and BR55's helping Class 40's. The next problem was dinosaurs on the line leading to some nasty collisions and derailments. The important thing is, he is five years old and would rather spend his money on a second hand model made in 1978 of a 1930's German engine he likes than some cheap plastic fad made in china that will be gone and forgotten in a few weeks. I get looks of total disgust for mixing OO and HO but this is off-set by seeing my Son, on entering Barrow Hill Roundhouse, run up to a Claude Hamilton and try to hug a fifty ton locomotive. I am now a rail-fan, I have been well trained.

Similar here. After several years I finally managed to lay track for my OO British outline, based loosely on Burton on Trent where my parents came from, steam and green diesels era mainly. Then I had spent some time living in Munich and loved going down to the massive terminus station and seeing all the diesels and electrics from all parts of Europe. Fatal. I extended the layout to add another massive oval and so it now runs OO and HO, and just for good measure some 009 (HO on N gauge track) as we went down to Austria one weekend and I saw all their narrow gauge locos and carriages. As we used to say in Australia, Run What Ya Brung - ie anything goes 🙂 Oh and the British side is mostly analogue and the Continenatal DCC !

Well said, I agree 100%. My layout is a totally fictional heritage line. Using a mix of both old & new locos & stock, steam diesel & emu. It reflects what i enjoy in the real world. Being involved in both railway restoration & bus preservation it is reflected on my layout with a varied mix of locos & a preserved bus rally. Not to everyone's idea of "a perfect' Layout but it's what I enjoy. It's no one's else's business to tell me or anyone else what they should be doing

Dare I say you got yourself a subscriber Charlie! I loved your rebuttal to the Brexit comment and Tony's article. I'm glad I've never heard of him, and I may keep away from that magazine for a while. I'm a North American "Railroader" but always buy local when I can; the local shop does a great job stocking peco products including the code 83 switches and flex track, as well as woodland scenics and Kadee couplings. If I'm lucky, they also tend to get some rolling stock / locos in, which makes my day. People like you and my father have kept me interested all these years. Thank you!

In the days that I worked for a living, we would often get in 'the rear cab' of a unit and wind the destination blind around just to see what destinations were on them. You may well have seen units leaving Fenchurch Street with 'Thorpe le Soken' shown as the destination. Equally, when my dad was 'in the mob', one of his squadron's aircraft came out of the paint shop with the code letter 'N' painted the wrong way round. Features like that can drive a rivet counter mad, especially if you have the photo to prove that you are right!

Reminds me of a person who once told me that a particular class of loco NEVER hauled a class of wagon because they were all withdrawn before the locos came into service. I told him that they did in fact haul those wagons. He replied with "Never happened". So I proceeded to show him several photos I'd taken where multiple members of the class had hauled those wagons through the 1980s and early 90s. Needless to say, he would not admit he was wrong, even with the proof. For those in Australia, it was V/Line G class hauling GY wagons. ;-)

@@emdB67 I was tasked for a weekend with overseeing 'rail replacement buses' whilst some pretty deep engineering was going on, two 'beds' were being re-dug with some big excavators. These were brought to site by two trains, both hauled by the latest type of diesel. The trains themselves were a collection that should have been in museums, all WW2 'welltanks' with their original makers plates on. Never did find out how the buses got on.

An excellent video Charlie. As regards the Railway Modeller article, my response to such "pseudo-perfectionists" is, on viewing their layout, "Why aren't the people moving, I can't see any birds flying around, why are the trees not bare as it's winter now, why doesn't it ever rain, why can't I smell the diesel fumes (coal smoke)" etc. We can't achieve complete realism, so it's up to us to decide where we draw the line (often governed by our pecuniary state).

Thanks to You Tube videos from you , Everard Junction , New Junction , Dean Park , Mouldy Raspberry ,Kathy Mallet ,Tony North Eastern and all the other great modellers which I now follow , I have boarded the loft ,laid track and over the weekend got an electric point motor to switch a turnout on the other side of the loft ,for me who had never soldered before a great achievement , the point is now overlooked by my fist attempt at a Metcalf model signal box ,badly made up with opaque windows created by an over zealous use of glue , but I am learning and more to the point thoroughly enjoying myself . Charlie, you hit the nail on the head. I started railway modelling when i was 12. I made my first layout which i exhibited a couple of years later. However the comments from a few people made me stop exhibiting. I wasn't being too sensitive, just that the comments were very negative and some even personal. I then joined the Army and never managed to continue my love of modelling. I'm 45 now and have taken up the hobby again. With the purpose of having fun. I was born in Oswestry and loved listening to the tales of the old GWR and BR days being a railway town. My layout is a BR western region one. However i also run some stock that would not have been seen on those rails. Some people ask me why and i explain as you did "to have fun" and that is what the hobby is all about. Returning to this hobby has really helped me through some bad times and forget the demons in the dark. So when people say negative comments i ask them how they would feel if i criticised the things they do to have fun. Thank you for your great videos and tutorials. They help a lot. After watching 2 i subscribed straight away. Thanks.

I was forced to retire 20 years ago by the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. This has now severely depleted and continues to limit my abilities to follow my interest in model railways. That said, I am hugely motivated by your excellent videos which show both a real skill in communicating and also your love for the model train. One thing my illness cannot limit is my imagination - which is probably why my attic has a far too big, fault ridden, historically inaccurate, detail poor, unfinished layout with very mixed stock. But, my grandsons love it and the look of happiness on their faces make everything worthwhile. Everything. Be encouraged - you are doing a great job - clearly by the number and content of the replies many others feel exactly the same way. As for your critics, I ask them "will it matter in a hundred years?" Probably not.

Very true, there are a lot of people that are very brave hiding behind a keyboard who I wonder where are their manners gone? If you have nothing nice to say about what someone is trying to do, then they need to keep it to themselves. People like you and Kathy take the time to go out make video which takes a lot of effort where you are showing everyone else skills that you have developed over a period of time from building layouts, I for one appreciate the time that you take to make your videos, along with everyone else who makes videos for the hobby and I do learn something from watching them. Spot on Charlie - my layout is MY layout so I will build it to the best of my abilities and I will run whatever I want on it and in any combination that takes my fancy at the time! Saying that - I am about to dismantle the Pendarves and Penware that is in our loft as we are about to move to a larger house with a garage for the layout. Ground level so no more loft ladders and a larger space - new 3 level track plan already designed based on the current one but modified to fit the new space and with a low level fiddle yard added. Keep up the good work 99.999% appreciate all that you do to encourage us and to promote the hobby (same to be said for Kathy and a few other stalwarts on You Tube). Cheers, Peter

Well said Charlie ! I recently took up the hobby having just retired, and my experiences within the model railway has been generally positive with people being only eager to provide helpful, sound advice, either at shows or online as you indeed do. Just over a year back I was encouraged to have a go at exhibiting and it’s something that I found to be very enjoyable as well as a great learning experience … save for the people who bring their closed minds along. To be honest, I have only suffered from the odd comment or two, but other exhibitors who have clearly put a lot of time and effort into producing something astonishing have been given a much harder time. What was particularly worrying was that the were a lot of young ears around. We desperately need to encourage fresh blood and yet these prospective model engine drivers of the future were hearing a lot of negativity when they should have just been enjoying the sight and sound of the trains. Disappointing.

4 englishlies- We say "keyboard warriors" like they are a distinct and solitary group. Social media makes it easy to be a jerk- no real-life consequences, but these people have always been there, in any activity If one listens close at any club, they are there. They may not reach hundreds or thousands, but they say, mutter, smirk, sneer. True freedom is a two-way street, and these people also feel free to vocalize, even if mean.

Great video, a lot of people don't know the difference between helpful advice and picking apart another person's hard work. I agree with you on Tony Wright's article, and his Wright writes thread on RMWeb is the same. I find him a little bit snobbish about people who use RTR rolling stock because of the lack of 'skill' involved, which I always find a little ironic as his layout has a lot of stuff which was built by other people, like the track for example. It's a shame because he's a very talented modeller and he has a great layout in Little Bytham but his "modelling is not like it was in the olden days" schtick a little tiresome.

Charlie, I've had some really personal attacks, mostly by people who have no video content on their "channel". People seem to take great delight in joining youtube simply to slate or attack others. Often these people don't have any content on their account so maybe KZbin should make that a condition of having a channel, and delete all accounts that have no content, after all its a media platform. The simple way to prevent trolls posting such negative or rude comments would be to disable comments, but a lot of contributors don't like doing that. We all have our own personal obsessions, such as your head code requirement, but it's keeping that to ourselves that's important. Having a loco with the correct head code for the train its pulling is a "condition" you have imposed on yourself when running your trains on your layout. If someone is running a RTR loco with the wrong code for the train they are running on their layout then that's their prerogative, its their layout. I agree with you that the article in RM is negative and does nothing to encourage people taking up railway modelling. I agree there are those societies and groups that strive to make everything true to life and correct running procedures, but everything has its place. I much rather see a layout at an exhibition where there is a lot of activity than a layout where everything is true to life and follows railway practices but nothing happens. People also often forget that most layouts are fictional, so how can something be wrong when in reality it never existed.

Great video once again, Charlie. Keep them coming! My own layout is based on a layout I saw in a magazine a few years ago. It's a fictitious branch, set somewhere in Dorset, so mine is even more divorced from reality. What matters with any home-built layout is that the builder likes it - visitors don't have to! Some years ago, I joined a model railway club. After one exhibition, I had the cheek to suggest that we should do what many firms and organisations do and go through what we had done well, and what we could have done better (Even the RED ARROWS do this after every flight). I was told in no uncertain terms that I was just having a moan and, instead of moaning, I should get stuck in and do something to help. I left there and then. And these outfits claim they are there to encourage newcomers into the hobby . . .

Absolutely agree Charlie, I run steam and have been told it is ridiculous to have crew on the footplate when engines are not working. That person was told by me that it would be even more ridiculous to run the train without crew! I've also been told the shade of green on my locos is slightly too light. I usually treat these poor creatures with the contempt they justly deserve. You were right to rant about RCs and KWs, It needs saying and I salute you for doing so. Stick to your guns!

Well said and thank you Charlie. Here's a thing, I'm 68 and have terminal cancer and I have recently gone back to making model kits, a hobby I have not done and enjoyed in over 50 years. I am attempting, for the first time, a little siding diorama of run down track and a clapped out Esso tanker. In whatever time I have left I am doing it for fun, it's challenging and actually quite difficult and absorbing. I am writing this because I enjoy your videos immensely, they are inspiring for a would be modeller, and because I see totally unnecessary and hurtful comments on the internet and really, life is too short for that nonsense. As someone else has commented, if you have nothing good to say, don't say it. Many thanks, Keith.

Well, this comment is great! Such a true statement. We could always shoot these keyboard warriors down, asking them how they fuel their loco? As there are always bigger scales where you can drive and ride the models!

If I could model half as good as Kathy I'd be over the moon, and as for the person in the RM, does that mean if I go back to railway modelling from my present bus and coach boards I must find myself an old aircraft hanger just to get a station complex as small as my home town had, even now Swindon station would require a huge room, and I take it then that same person would never use ready made track as the gauge is not to scale. As for the comment about Peco I took that as it was your prefered option and not telling everyone they must buy Peco.

I love your videos! I think they are amongst the most amusing and inspiring on KZbin and I love your no nonsense approach. Re the guy that commented about your choice of track I actually thought he was going to comment that PECO also do 4th radius curves (ST-235)! I noticed that when the original video came out but kept it to myself exactly for the reasons you mention in this video! Happy modelling!

You seem to get these people in all sorts of hobbies. River counters are particularly prevalent at car shows haha! “Oh that’s not exactly the right shade of blue”. “That car would have come on 15” wheels not 16”” etc. Most simply have nothing better to do and don’t engage in the hobby themselves

Clearly you are talking a lot of common sense! For you there is an element of being a victim of your own success - of 16000 subscribers you are always going to find a few sadder folk. We all see things that we don't like on peoples layouts at shows, and keep them to ourselves. Not just because there is nothing positive in such comments, but frankly they can be in themselves daft! I for instance have an issue with so many reverse parked cars on layouts! You see my point ... But I do always compliment exhibitors on specific things I like. I guess you do too. I will watch the lady you mentions video. Best wishes Ian.
