Not so much lost my mojo but put off by a steam engine modeling forum I belonged to, I love making 1:12 scale live steam dioramas of industrial plants. Very inspiring especially for someone getting into model railroading or getting back into model railroading. Seeing the various layouts & the size, someone just starting out or reentering the hobby may be intimidated & self conscious if they only have a small layout & think there's isn't good enough to show to others. Like you said, don't be afraid to show your layout or kit you built. Take pride in your work. As someone else always says, "it's your railroad, do what you like".

Love the video . Great job as usual . The thing is that I'm a rivet counter BUT ..... I'm a nice one . I taught my friends how much fun it is to build from kits or scratch even conversion . Back when I was a kid ( some 12 , 761yrs ). My Dad got me a 1:48 'th scale Bat mobile from a shop that also had a Slot car track . Well longer story short ( novella ) . I converted the car body to fit one of my slot cars , although it was a little loose fit it was a Big Hit . The shop owner even fixed the problem of the loose fit for free and let me in a race . But that was a long time ago . Back when I was in my 20's . I accidentally got into building models for a local on Base Military Museum . The curator told me I was doing an excellent job on repairing the models that were already there and asked me to see about the availability of some other models needed for the display . That started a small career of 14 museums . That's when I discovered that I have PMS ( no not that one ) Professional. Modeler . Syndrome . I've got to the point where I'm able to work with several models at the same time . At this time I'm working with 6 1:32'nd scale aircraft from Vietnam era. 5 1:32'nd W W - 2 aircraft . AND 14 1:350 scale W W - 2 Battle Ships . US , UK , DKM and IJN . One of which I'm using as a personal challenge . The USS Arizona by Hobbie Boss . Wood Decks from Scale Decks . With 4 sheets of Brass parts from Big Ed photo etch . I'm sorry that it's a long story . I've sort of given up on working on my Trains and Layout , due to a very leaky roof over my work shop that needs to be completely replaced . Well what I'm trying to say is ..... Yes I'm a rivet counter But I only count Mine and try to encourage others .

Wow what a great inspirational video. I haven't lost my mojo as I'm new to this great hobby and if anything, I'm super excited. The part that got me was the rivet counters. When I went to a local rail club to see what the hobby is all about, I was expecting some advice and hoping for some guidance. Well the baboon that was showing me around the club asked me what I was planning on modeling. My simple answer was "British steam trains" then he bombarded me with what era, what region, pre grouping or big four, post grouping. Somewhat confused I said to him just British steam, anything. Basically he told me that if I didn't choose I'd be wasting my time and money! I was so put off by him it took me another two years before I started this great hobby. I now run what I want on my layout from Stevens Rocket to the Tornado and love it.

I was once part of a model railway club for two years and it was almost the same there. I didn't have many model making skills to help out with building club layouts, I was more than happy to learn new skills but I wasn't approached or invited to join in on building the layout under construction. I was a lot of the time reduced to bringing my own trains and running them on the test layout throughout club hours. In the end I left as I felt like I was wasting my time and money on doing something that I could have been doing at home. Whenever I met new members, they asked me specifically what I choose to model. I gave an honest answer and said 'nothing really just whatever I like' and they just don't see you as one of them. So in the end I just felt like withdrawing my membership was the soundest option to choose. I built my own layout, although single track and simple I love it to pieces. I put whatever features I wanted on it. I wanted to put in a red poppy field, village green, canal, level crossing and a small halt-like station in Midland Maroon livery and so I did it. I run a mish-mash of locos and stock, from pre-grouping to BR blue diesel. I freed myself from the shackles of one era, one location, one railway company only. I feel like model railway clubs or societies don't do enough to attract or encourage young members. It's like they are clubs for retired old gents where everything is either their way or the highway.

Kathy, you are SO right. I am getting back in the hobby after a 50 year hiatus. I have been flying RC airplanes the last 25 years and we too have our "rivet counters". There are so many types of aircraft to fly from small foam ones to giant scale masterpieces. You can fly a trainer along side a P-51 and have just as much fun. Kathy you are an inspiration and a brilliant ambassador for this great hobby. Your top 10 tips were bang on target especially the rivet counters. Over the last 30 years of exhibiting and having had three layouts published in the modelling press there hasn't been one show that a rivet counter hasn't been in attendance! At first it was demoralising but I soon developed a thicker skin. Simple solution is ask them if they have a layout and why not bring it along to show it off. Oh you haven't got one! Well I then whisper in their ear - the rest is not printable! But they never bother you again!

Thanks Kathy, I found your video just in time. I was in my local model shop sharing a couple of photos of the forest I had built on my layout. My layout has taken about five years to build and runs right around the room; the forest takes up nearly one wall in the room; it had taken about a year to build and I was pleased with it. Another customer looked and said, 'Is your layout DC or DCC?' I told him him it was DC. He said, 'Ah well, you're just playing at trains aren't you. You can't have a serious layout unless it's DCC and you're wasting your time making things like that.' And then he walked off. I've hardly touched my layout since and when I do his words keep coming back to me. Listening to you though it seems I'm not the only one who's suffered this kind of discouraging abuse. Thanks for the video.

Empty the trays and clean the whole thing up ( INCLUDING AIRBRUSHES ) Make it clean and perfect as pharmacy ! Then I sit down , and just enjoy the rare moments of tidiness . For fifteen minutes ... and then something pops up in my mind ...there goes my tidy , snug moments of modelling .

Hi Kathy, i've been speed profiling loco's and trying to get them all to stop at the same point and ultimately failing on the last one. Your video puts it all in perspective "it's a hobby enjoy it". I'll raise a glass to that. As for "friends" demoralising you, we all have friends like that but what fun they are missing. Excellent video, very inspirational thank you.

Thanks a lot Malcolm and good luck with that last loco.

Thanks for posting this video, I have recently gone through a self loathing stage after a similar situation where someone told me it didnt look right or good etc. I took months off because of that. Its nice to know other builders experience this as well. I love your videos, please keep them coming !!!!

What a great video! I am a huge fan of yours and admit I just went thru that phase where I burned out on finishing my small layout and took some time off and have scratch built a couple of TARDIS's (6 1/2" tall)to hone my skills with styrene.. it was the break I needed and your video has made me feel even better! Thank you! Just ignore those that would " look a gift horse in the mouth" to quote an old saying!!

Wow, what a fabulous video you made there Kathy, without doing any form of modelling at all, your words have put a new spring into my life, your genuine enthusiasm, wise words of wisdom but best of all, you made me feel as good as the next person which if I’m truthful, I was beginning to doubt. Thank you so much for producing this video Kathy, it has made such a difference to my thought process of my hobby - model railways! 👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now. ........... Graham

Some excellent points. This is your hobby - put in to it as much (or as little) as you like and just enjoy it. You do it for your satisfaction not for others. I particularly liked the comparison of river counters with dementors - very apt!

A fabulous video and I couldn't agree more with the sentiments. I have yet to start my railway, however, I have learned rule 1... It's your railway so you can run what you like and model what you like. I have no time for the rivet counters. I am a complete novice modeller and rely on videos, such as yours and others, for ideas, inspiration and know how. I love what you do and know that I am a long way from your standard. Won't stop me having a go, however :)

Great video Kathy, I am astonished that anyone would have the brass neck to criticise your work!!! Omg, I think that has to be envy on their part, you're among the top modellers in the country and someone tries to criticise your work just wow ha ha. Great video again and you finished with a lovely smile

I do get criticism but there’s normally a nugget of truth which I try to learn from.

That diorama looks pretty amazing to me. Ah rivet counters, your right we have all encountered them at some stage. Smaller scales quite often lend them selves to a bit of artistic license due to the nature of the sizes involved. As long as you are happy with the scene it is portraying, then that's fine. I have built many scratch built items of rolling stock from scale drawings, and yes some details are not quite right, but I know and most of the people who have seen them have agreed they are amazing which is good enough for me. Enjoy the hobby, I have since I was 4 and I am 50 now so it must still have some appeal.
@KathyMillatt5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nige. As long as you enjoy it, that’s the important thing.

Love this - it's all very true. As for the rivet counters, I always ask, "What's your model like?" and they ALWAYS shut up. At best they start, "Well when I build mine, it will..." I'll never criticise someone who has had a go at modelling, there's always something to learn and just because you are new, doesn't mean you won't have some good ideas.
@KathyMillatt5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree Phil. Some of the newbies blow the socks off us more experienced modellers. I love seeing what they’re coming up with!
