My money (literally $5250) is on Fisker. I like their asset-lite business plan, their partnership with Magna that not only includes car production bit an ownership “skin in the game” stake and a great looking well performing car that is cheaper than a similarly appointed Tesla MY, Liriq or Mach E. Can’t wait to get mine end of this year/early 1st Q next year and as I was in the second wave of early invites, i feel its better than an 80/20 chance of happening that soon.

Fisker is slated to begin production in the Magna plant, in November. 50k orders. Their Ocean vehicle starts at $37k which is cheaper than nearly all the others listed. I think if they can get the cars in driveways, they'll be fine.

Lol, yeah, Fisker will not be delivering anything any time soon, if ever. Where is their UI? How do you figure Fisker are going to make money selling a car bigger than the Jaguar I-Pace with a larger battery pack plus a solar roof and a bunch of bespoke recycled materials parts, and oh yeah, manufactured by the same company in the same factory as the I-Pace, for...$31,000 less than the I-Pace? That will not happen, Fisker is just a pump and dump scheme, it is not a car company.

@@tribalypredisposed It's not good business practice to show your competitors all your cards, before releasing a product. Therefore you won't see the UI until launch. The base price vehicle has a smaller battery and NO solar roof. Higher trim for $30k more , has the larger battery, 4WD and solar roof. You want fancy, you're going to definitely pay for it. But at least the affordable model is offered, unlike the other manufacturers on this list.

When Fisker first "came out of stealth mode" with this "company" he claimed to have a supercapacitor breakthrough with patents, a graphene production breakthrough with patented machine, a battery division lead by "nanotech expert" Jack Kavanaugh, and shortly after that claimed the supercapacitors were already in production. Reality was the supercapacitors were a science fair project that fit in your hand and lit a single LED, the graphene machine was literally a DVD burner, Jack Kavanaugh is a scam artist retired dentist who a court had recently determined to have defrauded investors and sold a fake Picasso. No patents had been filed for, let alone issued. Never mind, Fisker then claimed to have a solid state battery breakthrough with fifteen patents. What Fisker had was an effort to steal IP from Quantumscape, but he got caught and fined $750,000 by the courts. Now you think he is keeping his UI secret because he is a smarty-pants. Alternately, the fact that his company was basically his computer and his lies and he and his wife when "investors" gave him a billion dollars for it and the vast majority of employees have been there less than a year and were hired in great haste and are nowhere near having a functional UI could be the actual reason. If you want to think that Fisker the pathological liar is telling you the truth this time, I just hope you can afford to lose the money.

It is a very niche market but I think competition will bring the price down to normal levels. When Prius first came out, it was 50k or more and was almost considered luxury because of all the elite clients. For now if you want a luxurious EV that gets range comparable to ICE, your choices are either Lucid (way better build) or Tesla. Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, etc are all lacking in major ways in one or more departments.

Lucid will be fine in my opinion already have stored build all over America especially the bigger cities, but announced the Saudi Arabia plant which will be huge but they know they need to make a standard low cost vehicle which they will do. Fisker's strategy is the most unique. By relying on Magna, which already makes high quality vehicles it simplifies the process and reduces capital needs to get to mass production volumes faster and cheaper.

That’s just frisker marketing. Fisker still has to pay magna and deal w supplier shortage. It’s still very capital intensive. That’s why they’re asking for $5k non refundable deposits for reservation holders. I want Fisker to succeed, but at this point in mid July, I’m doubtful they’ll have any meaningful delivery by year end as promised.

Ones to succeed: Rivian:for deep pockets (although burning through money fastest.) Seem to be ramping up. Lucid: most efficient battery-drivetrain. Clean balance sheet. Saudi PIF backing. Fisker: asset light with manufacturing partnerships with magna and foxconn. Polestar: already scaling and making profit. Like fisker, asset light with manufacturing connection with Volvo and Geely. Can't say much for the rest.

Long ago, Japan had more than 200 motorcycle startups. Honda was one of them. They just put a small engine on a bicycle. Now there are only about 4 companies left. In China, electric car startups have been eliminated rapidly, and BYD practically dominates.

EVs are quite a bit easier to develop than ICE counterparts, hence 100s of new brands, especially in China. Technology is going to be the dominating factor in EV, with price coming in close second. Most EVs are using same drivetrain, platform and battery technology. Engineering like swappable battery, subscription lease, Full Self Drive, etc will make or break these new companies. Dont think 0-60 in 2 second is going to matter in the long run.

Not exactly though, it's more like the startups don't have quite the expansion rate BYD has thanks to BYD's hybrid vehicles and the Han. Li ONE and XPeng P7 sells close to 10k units a month, virtually unheard of for a local brand with a premium price range before 2020. It's not much compared to BYD's monstrous sales but it's still growing

Polestar is technically a volvo property so its kind of not a startup. I think that the Chinese brands will likely take over whatever market share Tesla doesn't already have.

I hope so. My fear is they may not have anything propriety in their cars to differentiate from competition. For now if the range, price, tech matches what they say on paper, Fisker will be a force to reckon with in the EV world. Reliability will also be key to any startup EV's success VS traditional manufacturers with existing dealership and repair network.

Both cars are too expensive to be mainstream. At this point EV needs to be mainstream to survive. My bet is on Polestar and maybe Fisker. Only reason I say maybe to Fisker is, we dont know what real world numbers are... everything is speculation and simulation. If their real world specs are close to what they projected... Fisker will be huge in the 30-70k segment.

Probably one of the most impressive aspects of driving was the vehicle’s field of view. I would compare driving a Canoo to watching a movie in an IMAX theater versus watching one at home on TV. After the drive was over and we returned to my car, it felt as if the dash, steering wheel, windshield, and infotainment center were all crowded right in my face. Driving the Canoo, it felt as if all of those things had been moved far forward, but still easily in reach.

VinFast has a better chance than all these EV start ups. Vingroup one of the largest conglomerate in Vietnam has the finances to support global expansion. Over 65000 reservations for VF8 & VF9 in USA, Canada, Europe and Vietnam. Over 2700+ VF8 exported and sold in USA and Canada. Over 4000 + VFe34 ( sold only in Vietnam) , VF8 & VF9 sold in Vietnam. VF5, VF6, VF7 currently in development. A factory will be built in North Carolina, USA soon which will produce batteries, buses, scooters and electrical vehicles.

I think polestar - Geely group is going to be huge in the EV market. I just dont like the polestar 2. Design is beautiful but I cant tell if its a sedan or SUV. They should lower it. Also the range is a bit disappointing. EV should come in 2 forms - basic commuters 150-200 mile range or normal ICE competitors with avg range of 300+ similar to a regular ICE car.

Why would anyone buy a vehicle from a company that could go out of business.? I own two Teslas, which are by far the most advanced cars I’ve ever driven. Tesla is profitable and strapped with cash. It makes no sense to buy a car from another EV maker when they could later go out of business and you have nowhere to service your vehicle. Play it safe and buy a Tesla.

They all have to use the open platform like Android and small developers can develop control systems and power system for the open platform. Microsoft, Google etc will come in to provide software for the future EVs. All these brands will focus on design, sale, and marketing. Its like all shoes from Addidas, Nike, Asics, Puma are all from the same manufacturer.

I feel like canoo stands out more than these other vehicles.. they created “the skateboard “ for the engine and then the rest of the car.. it can be cost efficient for repairs.. more room to work with.. unique designs never seen before!! All the other evs looks like everything we’ve already seen! Canoo stands out.. they target businesses and consumers.. and they’re cheaper! I am rooting for canoo.. and I can’t wait until they get released next year! Walmart and other businesses already purchased their vehicles .. they made a truck for the army!! I don’t hear the other evs doing that.. yes canoo might not be making money now.. but I can feel it that they will be a game changer in the future.. plus there’s been small talk that Apple might be interested in them as well.. Several of these were actually given a lifeline by the supply chain issues. They were given a plausible excuse for not getting vehicles in driveways. We shall see what happens in 2023. There's no way that all of these will survive. And if you think getting the first 100,000 vehicles on the road is difficult, just wait until they have to update their models yet still provide service and parts for those first 100,000 vehicles. The car business isn't easy. It's one thing to have a great idea for a new vehicle. It's another thing to have to execute on it and build the infrastructure to support it long-term.

Porsche and Audi were a huge disappointment to me because of the range they offered. EV range needs to match avg ICE range ~300+. Mercedes design just plain ugly. I dont like the Lucid design but overall it is better than what these luxury brands have to offer.

The Best EV will be the one that first adopts the idea of swappable standardised Battery packs. Then you can have spares charging at home while driving. You could upgrade your batteries as battery technology advances. Smart Battery manufacturers will set up charging service stations where they'll swap your batteries for their fully charged ones (Calor gas bottle style).

That tech is still well down the line. In order to do it, you'll likely have to make it smaller, which will reduce range. Not to mention likely add complexity to an already pricy commodity. Swappable battery packs are a red herring at the moment. The idea is nice, but only from the standpoint of those who are used to current infrastructure which didn't get here over night and don't like change.

It is worse than that, because the ones with the most cash may be worse off and not better. The original Fisker Automotive had a lot more cash than Tesla had, and they burned though it and died quickly. Lucid and Rivian not only have piles of cash, they have big backers, and that may, and seems to have, allowed them to be reckless about spending money. Elon Musk recently stated in an interview that without a dramatic change of course, both Rivian and Lucid are going to go under quickly, and he knows a thing or two about EV startups.

The Chinese are coming and they have some nice EVs for as low as 9k USD but they are mostly state majority owned companies and have different rules and incentives than profit based companies. If Tesla had tried to make the affordable EV first and the luxury models later it would be out of business. What you are saying cannot be done with current regulations in the US or Europe. In fact even at the prices they are now charging, the only company outside of China that is capable of making a profit on EVs is Tesla. I mean you can buy a crap EV like an old leaf for cheap, but they are cheap for a reason. Currently the price of a Tesla is actually cheaper than a gas car that cost ten thousand dollars less, if you consider the cost of operation and ownership. Depending on your electricity costs EVs can operate virtually for free, except for tires and insurance. If you already have solar, or live someplace with abundant cheap hydro-electricity you would be ahead in one year at today's gas prices. I pity the fools in their dumb monster trucks who think it's cool to drive pickups they never pick up anything with, and off roaders that never go off road. They are feeling it. Good time to get a deal on a extended cab dually diesel if you want to cry everytime you put fuel in it. If you had bought a Tesla two years ago, you could have driven it for two years and sold it today for more than you paid for it.

And that's the reason some of these companies aren't going to make it Tesla got lucky but we can't say the same for these other come-ups... And right now in my mind it doesn't make sense for me to buy a car that cost more and gets less miles than a regular car if I can go 400 miles in a Toyota I should be able to go 400 miles in a Tesla without paying damn near 80k when the technology gets to that point I'm switching straight over to EVs but until then I think people should just get a hybrid or plug-in hybrid and learn how to do maintenance

In China things are different because of the huge support from the government, and many companies and factories are owned or partially owned by the government.

Fisker Ocean is built by Magna and not Foxconn. Same with Lucid and Rivian. China is the biggest battery manufacturing (main EV component) so most manufacturing has to go through China. Also, China population and government has committed to EV technology a lot more than USA. It has become a stupid political statement here in the US.

I don’t know that they can make it in the current environment we are in, but their vehicle is definitely the most futuristic EV. I’m not crazy about everything in the LSV but you drive up in that thing and It Will turn heads. It doesn’t look like anything else out there. At 8 a week, they should have enough to draw some crowds anywhere they are on display. Outside of the cyber truck, most of these others just look like any other ice vehicle.

Lol last thing I would do is listen to Elon. He just loves to say things to stay relevant. Tesla has had nearly 0 competition so far. All these supply chain issues, though also hurting Tesla, has also delayed many of its competitors. Tesla's technology and design is starting to look stale. My bet is on the Geely group overtaking Tesla by 2025. Also if Fisker is close to what it says on paper, they will be a huge success. EVs are quite a bit easier than ICE to develop and manufacture. Most of them are using the same batteries (including Tesla), same platform etc. Service and technology such as Full Self Drive, innovative lease and subscription, price, etc will be a huge factor in the EV market. Tesla has superchargers which is a huge deal but they are thinking of making those inclusive unlike what Apple did vs Android and Microsoft.

Lucid was stupid. Trying to out-Tesla Tesla. Tesla did all the R&D for them. They should have copied their blueprint instead of trying to beat them at their own game. Secondly, the Air sedan is hideous looking. The nearly decade old Model S and sleek Porsche Taycan makes the air look like a shoe. Tesla did it right. Roadster was their first car. A partnership with Lotus to save money. Model S followed and was mostly mono-spec with the exception of some small changes here and there. Model X was an engineer’s wet dream and served as the car to get people in Tesla dealerships. It is completely ridiculous in every way and I think that was on purpose. Then they followed that with the affordable Model 3 (also largely mono-spec for cost savings) and the red hot Model Y. SUV’s are ALL the craze. You’d think Licid would have released a sports car or an SUV. But instead they try to take the fight to Tesla and…. Well, Dead on arrival. Rivian was smart. They copied Tesla’s homework by releasing something fresh and new and kinda gimmicky, but avoided stepping on Tesla’s toes directly by engineering a product that they don’t have. But most of their software mimics Tesla which is the smart thing to do because again, Tesla has already done the R&D on what works/what people will tolerate. I can go on and on, but I predict that Rivian will succeed and Licid will be gone.

My bet is on Geely group (Polestar, Volvo, Lotus) to be on the forefront of EV technology. They will overtake Tesla in technology and sales. Tesla has enjoyed almost 0 competition and their cars and technology is starting to stale compared to others coming out. Tesla would have already started to feel the heat from some traditional manufacturers if it wasn't for all this supply chain issues.

Well, part of the problem, and a BIG part of it, is the COSTS of these vehicles! They are WAY overpriced - stupidly expensive and WHEN they can make them AFFORDABLE to the average guy and stop wanting to REACH the wealthy FIRST, then they will stand a better chance! Bring out an EV that is between $15K and $25K and YOU WILL get buyers, but at $45K + (with $45K being cheap) - don't expect to come into a market dominated by Tesla! Tesla is missing a BIG part of the population because their cheapest vehicle is still expensive for the average consumer! Stop blaming EVERYTHING else, your ENTRY strategy is WRONG - build AFFORDABLE and you will win the market - you bank on that! I can afford a $45K EV, but I can get MORE for the bang in a gas vehicle for LESS money, so WHY would I go for that - it would be stupid and THEN the charging time you have to spend on a 1600 mile road trip - gassing up is faster and you do not have to drive around and look for a stupid "charging station" and hope and pray there's not 20 EV there before you!

They've got thousands of orders and preorders and Walmart may invest to own up to 20% of Canoo. Ohio seems cursed for cars. We've lost almost all our plants. If Lordstown goes under, I hope that at least one of the other companies would buy up the old factory. People in this area need jobs, and we got a lot of land to get those plants built

Ohio and the Car Industry don't get along and the Lordstown plant is one of the big ones in that (was a very big leader in the strikes in the 70s if the old folk around here are to be believed). But hey, if Lordstown does go under, GM has renewed interest in the area to some degree (we started manufacturing batteries for the vehicles) and might move in. or Maybe one of the other electric truck/car companies takes over. Even if it was a scam, the plant is still in functional condition and ready to output with whatever people will throw at us.

Wrong. Only thing Tesla has going for it is its supercharger network. That is a huge selling point but it may change since Tesla is thinking of making it inclusive to other brands. Anything else, Tesla is being left behind and the competition hasn't even started yet. Tesla does not have the best FSD, not the best design, not the most luxurious, etc. Cant fault Tesla's build quality because my friend has 2 of them and both look and feel solid. I don't know if his UI is better than android auto because I am not used to it. I would much rather have Android Auto which crosses all platform and makes it easier to get used to.
