Thanks for putting this together! Ironically, just the other day I went through a dry run changing/using the spare tire (short of actually changing a tire) so I'll at least be familiar with the process and to confirm all pieces of the jacking equipment are present. (Small issue I've noticed with my R1S since taking delivery are a few missing pieces or equipment that doesn't work, e.g. the air hose coupler (either end) does NOT stay latched on to the nipple part on the vehicle. Apparently a common problem when I spoke to Rivian service. Ugh.) Note, the big cube piece is the jack stand base. Manual says to only use when changing the rear tires and not the front. It doesn't indicate why but thought I'd mention it here since it wasn't mentioned in the video. I'll probably carry some type of flat 10"x10" or similar size piece of wood or high density plastic and use it as a jack stand base for the front in case I'm parked on loose or uneven ground (e.g. gravel, mud, etc.). Another very important safety thing not mentioned in the video is to chock (not provided, so buy some) the tire kitty-corner from the tire you're changing, especially when changing a rear tire. The electronic brake in the R1S (probably the R1T also) only applies to the rear tires leaving the possibility of the front tires to roll when the rear of the vehicle is jacked up. Best advice I would give is to take the time to read the entire section of how to change a tire in the R1S owner's manual as there are specific times of when to change ride height along with the driving mode and other safety items. TIP: If possible, don't deflate and store the compact spare while it's still wet. The trapped moisture in the tire folds could develop mildew. :-/
@RivianDad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. Yeah, there's no way to do this perfectly, but I tried to do it safely as if I were out on the road. I don't normally keep chocks with me but perhaps I should. I also don't keep the ProEagle jack on board, but I did use it here. Interesting about the hose attaching issues. Hasn't been a problem for me.

Great video! A few flaws with Rivian's execution, though. That silly cap you have to stand on your head and pry off? Seriously? And a scissors jack can be safe and durable, but isn't suited to high- ground- clearance vehicles, hence the platform. A screw-type mechanical bottle jack is what many pickups use. Citroën DS from 1955 had a hydropneumatic suspension which could simply lift a tire off the ground with the push of a button. It's great that the spare tire can shrink, but you still have to haul the flat tire home, and I presume it won't fit in the well? This, at this price, should come with an air ratchet which can both remove the lug nuts and power the jack, if the suspension can't lift the tire.. Now THAT would be helpful. As for lifting a tire, the suspension should be able to know which tire is flat, and then adjust the suspension upward, then lower the opposite corner all the way while lifting the corner with the flat tire all the way, then back off that corner - it'll only need an inch or 2 to clear the ground. In fact, it need only do so enough to remove the flat, as the spare could be installed and then inflated [unless it needs to lie flat for that fancy inflation sequence]. That way, you could use the compressor and air ratchet to swap tires, then sit safely in the vehicle while the tire inflates, disengage tire change mode, and drive away.
@benk777 Жыл бұрын
Too bad the spare is no longer included in R1S deliveries. And not yet available for purchase from the gear shop. Any flat fix recommendations in the interim?
@RivianDad Жыл бұрын
boy, I wish I had something specific to offer here, but I don't. I think without the spare, it's just a matter of keeping a flat inflator kit with you. At least there is an onboard air compressor which can help in some situations. If you're planning an off-road outing with a high probability of a puncture, you may be able to buy a full sized tire to keep with you. I think those are easier to get and could even have an aftermarket spare to bring along. Haven't explored this but a good idea for a video. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. Out of curiosity, I wonder if it would be possible to change the tires without a jack, but instead by using the Rivian’s adjustable heights and a stand. In other words, starting in highest height setting, positioning a stand under the vehicle (near whatever tire needs to be changed), and then lowering the height, effectively lifting the wheel off the ground. I guess it will depend on whether the 5 or 6 inches in adjustable height difference is enough.
@RivianDad2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know this first hand but i imagine this would not work. I don’t think the air suspension can lift a tire, but who knows. Something to test! Thx.
@kylealden2 жыл бұрын
Don't think this will work - AFACT the air suspension will adjust the ride height but not limit the travel, so even at a lower suspension setting the wheels will still hang free the full length of travel.

The spare tire kit comes with a jack pad for the included jack, but it's not intended to be used on any other jacks. A couple brands like EVSportline sell jack pads that work great for other jacks, and Pro Eagle sells a Rivian jack pad intended for the offroad jack he used here (which will make your life a lot easier for regular changes, but the included bottle jack is good enough for an emergency).

Scott, How do you feel about the jack that came with the R1S? Is it stable enough for the job? or you would recommended an aftermarket one that would fit in the SUV?
@RivianDad2 жыл бұрын
Well, it's a scissor jack so basically it's the bare minimum. It's tough to use even under good circumstances and for a truck this heavy, could be quite dangerous. But, I have used it and it does work. Whenever I've been out for off-road trips, I bring the ProEagle along. It has saved a fellow R1T owner once. But, it's big and heavy so not ideal for a day-to-day option. I'm thinking about a bottle jack of some kind (maybe one that works with an air compressor), but the one I tried didn't have enough range to lift it, so I'm still looking. I'll keep you posted if I find something!

@RivianDad11 ай бұрын
Simple answer is yes. The bolt pattern is the same for the S and T so you can swap wheels between the vehicles. But, I'm sure there are reasons they say it's only for the S (testing, specs?), but in a pinch it can be bolted on for sure, although I haven't tried it myself.
