Highly recommend using wheel chocks to help prevent the truck moving while on the jack. Likewise, don’t go to final torque until you lower the truck enough to get some weight on the tires.

Thanks very much Scott and Ryan. Real good video. I learned a lot! And the most salient thing I learned is that I really don't want to rotate my tires (when I take delivery of my R1S in 2 years) myself. I really like the Rivian Style magnetic jacking pucks. You mentioned using jack stands, I don't see how that can be done with only the jacking points available.
@RivianDad
@RivianDad 2 жыл бұрын
I do have a jack stand, but I didn’t have it with me, if I did, I would put it under the part of the frame near the Jack point. But not rest the weight of the vehicle on it, since it would almost certainly damage the truck. In other words, I would use the jackstand as a safety back up only. But, there are probably better methods, some might suggest putting it under the axle, but since the axle situation is a little different for this vehicle, that makes it a little more challenging. :-) I suppose I’d have to call Rivian Service to get the recommended place for a jack stand. But my suspicion is that they would say we don’t recommend jacking up the vehicle by yourself in any case except emergencies - take it to the service center.
@flyboy61b
@flyboy61b 2 жыл бұрын
@@RivianDad Go to Page 219 of the Owner's Manual. If you remove the covers you have access to a large portion of the frame by each jacking point. Should be enough room for both a jack and jack stand. Per the Service center, once you have the access covers removed you can place a jack, or jack stand anywhere on the frame. A rubber pad will protect the frame. Everyone is correct about chocks. The parking brake only locks the rear wheels. Thanks for all of your videos.
@jjmarogil
@jjmarogil Жыл бұрын
Nice to see a dyi tire rotation on a rivian. I few questions. Without removing covers are there places to put a jack stand ? Maybe near a control arm joint? Also beside wheel locks best practice would be to have the floor jack perpendicular to the side since it will creep towards the center as the car is lifted. Having it on an angle impedes this rolling.
@RivianDad

Thanks good tip. I don’t know about the jack stands. I don’t see a good place for one. Best to ask Rivian about that.

I personally wouldn't recommend putting the spare into tire rotation practices if the owner's manual doesn't specify or require it. 1 being it's a spare (use in-case of emergency) 2 can sometimes (vehicle depending) throw off alignment due to overall wheel diameter. 3 when needing to replace the tires, you're buying 5 vs 4 (tires, EV tires aren't cheap and many overlook that cost). But that's just me as I'm the person that will buy 2 tires if one needs replacing (nail in/on/near the side wall and/or can't be repaired with the plug patch) and keep the other good ones as an off the rim backup spare. I do however check my spares during tire rotation for proper inflation and any signs of dry rot. 😁 Great video overall though. Keep up the great content.

Man I did mine this past weekend. Only messed up once and put the wrong tire back in the bed before realizing I needed to put a different one there. I 'really' need to get some of those jack stops. What a pain if you are changing more than one tire to take off the underbody plastic!

Hi all - I added links in the description to the tools we used for this video. Thanks! And, as several people have pointed out, we could (should) have used chocks to hold the vehicle in place. A good practice we overlooked. Next time.

Great video, BUT you need to read Rivian's instructions, LOL. Rivian states in the owners manual when jacking up the truck "If the jack begins to tilt, lower the jack. Reposition the jack rearward approximately 2in (5cm) try again". The only reason I found this NOTE in the Rivian manual, I wanted to know why the truck need to be at is highest suspension mode. I would think it was to lock the struts to keep them from extending as the truck was jacked up.

Now let's see your wife do that wheel rotation. Looks like Rivian needs to come up with an hydraulic jack that actually works. I'd hate to be stuck with a flat in that truck and have to depend on the flimsy jack that's included.
@JohnSmith-ij4xe
@JohnSmith-ij4xe 2 жыл бұрын
What you guys did is extremely dangerous and can be deadly or cause serious injury. Wheel chocks a must and best to always do wheel rotations on a flat surface ONLY. This is so the vehicle is less likely to move when being jacked up. Also when on a angle you are adding lots of stress to the jacks since you are asking them to hold the whole weight of the vehicle and the plastic jacking packs can and will crack or break which will cause the truck to fall and damage your vehicle. Only use the aluminum packs or solid packs when doing tire rotations. The rivian jack that comes with the truck is ONLY for changing spare tires only. This is why they have floor jacks and jack stands as they are made to hold the weight of your vehicle. Also you should be wearing eye protection. Remember safety first and if you do not have the correct tools you shouldn’t be doing it yourself as your life is more valuable then a tire rotation.
