It could be accurate. A. It's a truck and it's still wildly inefficient compared to a car. B. DC fast charging costs a fortune, especially if you don't have a monthly subscription for one of the charge services. Most Tesla and EA stations charge at least 3x the utilities rate for off subscription charging, and about 2x with a subscription. I've found it to be more expensive than gas if you are just relying on fast chargers. Charging at home is similar to paying about $1 a gallon for gas, at least with my utility.

I did charge at home before the trip and after arriving back home with about a 20% SOC. I think if I used superchargers for the initial charge and final charge it would have added another $60, my standard at home daily SOC limit is 50%. I use about 8-10% daily for commuting to work. An hour and a quarter charge at $109 just seems high to me. Is it because of higher rate charging at Tesla superchargers for non-Tesla vehicles? Love your humor! Thanks!

@crewisrad3 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. However, you’d have to determine what mileage a car that size would be getting. Also in the south gas is super cheap. If you’re in the north east or west the gas is double.

And don't forget that your time has value too. Your family and anyone else with you probably has time limits and constraints and also gives their time "value". On this trip he was basically "off-highway" getting fuel 1 hour for every 3 hours driven. A 30 hour trip took over 38 hours or an extra day. A extra day of vacation time has value to most people.

To be fair, a person needs to factor in the off/on highway portion of getting fuel. That is a 30 hour trip in a modern ICE based vehicle will all fuel stops and getting off/on the highway. Done it a few times in a variety of ICE based cars/trucks/vans. I live outside of Charlotte. I am guessing your trip took at least 38 hours (probably more). So roughly 75% of your time was "driving" and 25% of your time was off-highway getting to/from the station and actually re-fueling. That is what we tend to see either other EV's as well - roughly 1-hour off/on highway and refueling to every 3-hours of actual time moving towards your destination on the highway. A perfectly fine trip if you have an extra 8 hours (basically a day) for it.

So $109 for 450 miles. Hardly seems like a way to save money. I can fill up my HD diesel truck for that and get more miles and have 15 minutes of stop time. So while I’m am interested in EV the “fuel” savings” on the road doesn’t seem to be a plus.
@eggsinsideme3 ай бұрын
Wow so much for EVs being cheaper to “fuel.” I just did a 4800 mile round trip road trip and it cost me about $530 total in gas averaging 33MPG.
@jonmkohler3 ай бұрын
Keep in mind this is a truck without a tonneau cover, and he was going 80 in many parts of that video. Not a super efficient setup for an EV. And a similar sized truck probably gets in the 20-23 mpg range. Still tho, 19 cents per mile is freaking rough. That’s the equivalent of 3.80 per gallon for a 20 MPG truck. National average today is 3.3 per gallon regular. If that spikes up, then this starts to break even. Road tripping on public chargers are rough. Where EVs absolutely spank ICE cars is home charging, where some places can get into the 8 per kilowatt, and even at a crap efficiency of like 2 miles per KWh, that ends up being 4 cents per mile. Comparable truck would need to fill up at 80 cents a gallon to break even
@eggsinsideme3 ай бұрын
@@jonmkohler Agreed on all your points. EVs are awesome for around town. In Arizona I’m at .11/kwh and could “fill up” a Tesla Model 3 for like $6. For road trips, I’ll keep a gas car around. The time and inconvenience just don’t make sense if it’s a frequent need to travel large distances.
@carsonassociates32633 ай бұрын
Your 33mpg car is not directly comparable to a truck (which typically use about twice the amount of energy, gas or electric). In my experience, the cost of DCFC an EV on a long road trip is roughly equal to the cost of gasoline, for a similar-sized gasoline vehicle.

As for model Y or R1T, I’ve owned both (currently own the Rivian). Although the software, in my opinion, isn’t as polished as the Tesla software, I prefer the Rivian in almost every way over the model Y. The build quality seems much better (also significantly more expensive) in the Rivian. The Rivian range is a number you can actually believe. Although I never got stranded in my Tesla due to the inaccurate listed range. Primarily due to the vast Tesla network. But with the ability for Rivian to use most V3 and V4 Tesla charges combined with the Rivian’s greater range, I find traveling in either to be perfectly fine. I would say try to drive both and see which you prefer.

$109 to charge to go 454 miles. If you pay $3.00 per gallon for gas that would be 12mpg.

Where I live gas is more like $3.50, and that’s about what I pay to fill my F-150. Day to day charging is cheaper and road trips are about the same, That works for me.

@@rickmcdonald7075 I was a little surprised at the 12 mpg equivalent, but he was driving 80 mph in a vehicle shaped like a brick. Rivian has a good looking product, I'm not totally out in getting one. We have family members who drive Tesla's. Driving from KCMO to Nashville in Model Y long range managed 60 mpg equivalent. Charging at home 120 mpg equivalent after 40,000 miles 115 mpg equivalent. Charging at home, super charging and a few times free charging. I would like to know his total cost in charging over the 10,000 miles.

Seriously did you get thrown out of the house Ben? All that crap in the RiVN seems like you got moved out.

I would purchase an R1T if South Carolina had a service center. I know mobile tech is an option but for anything that's would require a service center visit....ugh. Maybe one day the laws will change here on direct EV sales.

So stupid states have those laws. They are losing tax revenue!

Service appointments are 3 months out in my neck of the woods. Ridiculous.

Highways numbered even or odd. Except for that road through New Mexico that for decades was number 666. Yikes! We're driving on Rte 666? Is that hoodoo over there walking toward us? Wait, the road is rippling like the bridge over the Tacoma Narrows back in the day. Oh. No, it's just that Big Gulp I had in Gallup that the Shape Shifter laced with a little acid so no worries, just ride the roller coaster and we'll be ok once we get to um ... Utah?

I like rivian but man, i can not come to my senses to financing a loan for $1200+ a month for 6 years. I got kids.
@Gjeebs3 ай бұрын
Yea I wouldn't do that either. Maybe buy one used. They are in the high 40's

It seems more costly to charge vs my Tesla Model YLR….
