Also let me know if y’all want to see a walk around of this Rivian!? I think this stuff is really cool but I don’t know if it’s universal.
@eric94322 жыл бұрын
Would definitely be interested in a walk-around. I feel the Rivians is just about the only electric vehicle I would want right now. But still not about to trade the Runner for it.

I would love to see a walk around of one of these. Especially if the owner was present to answer questions, and talk about his experiences living with it and off-roading with it. Kind of like the TFL style dude, I love my truck videos.

I wish the network for charging was better, which I imagine eventually it will be. But the rivian is more than capable, would be awesome to have one!

That’s hopefully going to expand soon. Also nice that next year they will also be compatible with the Tesla network.

I love these things. I still think the front end is a bit goofy, but other than that I think they look great, and I like the tech. I'm still not 100% sold on EVs, mostly because of our lagging infrastructure. Once that catches up though, I think they really will be a good alternative. Right now, I think hybrids are still the way to go. I've actually been considering trading my 4Runner for a RAV4 hybrid. I probably won't do it, the RAV4 is still a little small and lacks capability, but the 40 MPG is very tempting. Hopefully the next generation 4Runner is some sort of a hybrid that can touch 30 MPG. I think that would be a winner. Then hopefully by the next generation of vehicles, the charging network and range will be better for EVs. One thought I had, is that you can buy extended-range fuel tanks for vehicles like the 4Runner or Land Cruiser. I wonder if it would be possible to utilize some sort of an auxiliary battery. Yes it would really cut down on the bed space and cargo capacity, but would it be worth it for a few hundred extra miles of range?
@OXFOOT2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the infrastructure in the US is what’s holding back the advancement of electric vehicles. I feel like the faster we can get that fixed the faster we can develop the tech and bring more efficient cars to the rest of the world. The Rav 4 is a good option but yeah it’s just not super capable beyond easy to moderate trails. It’s a trade off for sure. The new Tacoma coming out in a few months is going to have an EV model so I’d imagine that 1. There would be a hybrid version and 2. If it’s successful in the Tacoma they’d add it to the next 4Runner as well.
@OXFOOT2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the Evian has an extended range battery coming out but I think the addition of another battery like an auxiliary tank would be incredibly expensive. My 2000watt power bank was $2k and that would get the Rivian about 1 mile.
@trailrunnah88862 жыл бұрын
@@OXFOOT good point on the cost of the aux battery. Also, I didn't realize there was going to be an EV Tacoma, very cool! Hopefully it's a hit and the 4R gets the tech too.
@fpartidafpartida Жыл бұрын
Range extenders (gas engines that produce electricity…BMW Rex had one) get a bad wrap in the EV circles, but I think they are perfect for trucks. You only need to run them when towing or when overlanding for more then a few days. Most of the time you’d run full BEV.

While I love the idea of electric cars its hard to consider this any more of an offroad capable vehicle than a Subaru. The weight and durability are a huge issues. Ive seen videos of them struggle on steep inclines that a stock 4runner or jeep would walk up with no problem.
@OXFOOT2 жыл бұрын
That’s fair. It doesn’t really have a low range of any sort however the major difference for me is the amount of clearance. I think the best comparison would be a Subaru if it had bag suspension and was able to get that height. So more capable but not by a ton.
@trailrunnah88862 жыл бұрын
@@OXFOOT counterpoint to that, and this is just a thought: Since electric motors make 100% torque at 1rpm, do they even need low range? And as far as speed control going downhill, it seems like the re-gen works pretty well as a hill descent control on these.
@admantiom18482 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the weight is a huge issue for me as well, also a Rivian was stuck in sand in Death Valley and we had a major hard time getting it out it was me with my Fj and my brother with his Dodge truck and we both hocked our winches to it and still had a hard time getting him out. 8000 lbs truck plus camping gear will bring it close to 9500 lbs mark, and that’s is a lot of weight, also some sorts of low rang gearing/system is a must since he was spinning tiers. I have a 4 speed Atlas transfer case with 11.69:1

Do you mean struggling like this? kzbin.infonhAftR0hTZw?si=syqjCeRqSMRPOKNh. Please post a link to a non-modified Subaru doing that 😀. BTW, a stock 4 runner would not have the approach or departure angle to be able to do this very same hill. As far as your durability comment goes, Rivian offers an 8 year /175,000 mile drive train warranty from the factory (which includes the battery). What does Toyota or Jeep offer since they are so reliable?
@fpartidafpartida Жыл бұрын
@@OXFOOTThat’s not a fair comment at all. The Rivian R1S just completed the Rubicon Trail in 2 days (without extra charging). Go ahead and Google “Hardest off road trail in the United States” and see what the #1 result is. The only modification they did to the vehicle was they added rock sliders and a winch attachment. You’re telling me you’d want to do that trail with a Subaru? 🙄.

Yeah the goal is to plan the routes out so you have enough to make it through the trail. Obviously the will be difficult as this is the first year model of the Rivian and the EV Tacoma hasn’t been released yet. By the time you ordered a new Rivian and actually got it (2 years from now lol) the network should be better. But yeah right now you are limited to trails off 70 or 285.

Yeah true. I love my 4Runner and it’s likely something I’ll have a while, maybe I’d trade for a Tacoma or tundra but I like Toyota a lot. I’d love to see the stats on the new electric Tacoma but at that point maybe I’d just do a hybrid. Or just a regular gasser.

These are way more capable than Subarus but yeah the no low range thing is sort of a killer. The clearance and low end torque makes these at least twice as capable as a stock Subaru.

Love this truck, but if there is a loss of power you have a brick. Seems like an oversight for an off-road vehicle. This truck can't even be recovered depending on the location.
@OXFOOT2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’d like to see more charging stations at trail heads. I think at some point if more companies make offroad electric vehicles then they’ll get to that it’ll make the feasible.
@DeDREWS1F2 жыл бұрын
@@OXFOOT even if we get charging stations at trail heads (which would be incredible) it sucks that the rivian has to have power to the wheels or they lock up. Maybe a future plug in battery for a "neutral" gear option in future models as a safety precaution.
@charlesgraham70882 жыл бұрын
Just think a coal fired or natural gas power plant is charging up the batteries. So, electric vehicles being better for the environment is nullified. Not a fan of them.
@OXFOOT2 жыл бұрын
Oh it has nothing to do with environmental reasons. I worked in oil and gas for like 4 years, I got nothing but love for oil and gas, just love the fact that I could have an all electric truck that can tow/haul and be used as an offroad rig while also doing 0-60 in 3 seconds. It’s the ideal two car solution but it’s one car.
@bakerboy56902 жыл бұрын
Ya ima be big fat no on electric overland vehicles… sure they have no gas but..no going through water? If a battery gets punctured or randomly combusts big fire no stoping that. Also no charge stations out in wilderness no extra battery to just swap or charge up. Only plus i see is running appliances and heated blanket haha.
@OXFOOT2 жыл бұрын
The charging network really is a big issue right now. Electrify America has made an effort to have charging stations not too far from trails. I don’t know if that was intentional or just happened to work out. While they are conveniently located, the charging time isn’t my favorite.
@zonehawk2 жыл бұрын
They can go through water better than most ICE trucks (3ft from Rivian). Also if a gas tank gets punctured or randomly combusts, no stopping that either. The only thing I agree with you on is the current lack of charging infrastructure but that's getting better rapidly too.
