I just got home from a trip in my new lightning ER. Los Angeles to Michigan. Was an awesome trip. Used superchargers most of the time with a few EA’s when needed. Found the price on SC usually a bit better. (I do have the membership with both Tesla and EA) one of the hotels I stayed at had free level 2 which was awesome. It was great to help break up the trip stopping every few hours to charge. gave me a chance to walk around a little and get the blood flowing or get something to eat. Over the entire trip I saved almost $200 over gas. This is compared to my ice f150 getting around 20mpg.

If I understand it correctly, there is a federal law that no commerce can take place at interstate rest areas. This was likely insisted upon by towns along the where the interstates were being built in the 50s because they were worried about having to compete with the much more convenient businesses right on the highway. The RECHARGE act has been kicking around congress for the last few years. It would allow for chargers to be built in rest areas. I’d be very interested in hearing a podcast about it. You guys and viewers should work together to advocate to get that bill passed.

23 USC 111. However, toll roads that do not get direct federal funding (NYS Turnpike, OH Turnpike, NJ Turnpike, etc) are exempt since they don’t get this funding, and their social media always makes sure to remind you that projects are done with 0 tax dollars. This also creates issues, as not even state agencies/authorities can engage in net 0 commerce at these rest areas. NY Evolve (owned np y NY Power authority) is constrained by this as an example.

This explains why the CalTrans rest stop DCFCs are free. They have card readers though. As soon as the law passes they can start charging. I feel like I’m owed a refund for every rest stop snack/beverage machine I’ve spent money at, though.

Idk if you figure it out later in the video, but changing the filters on the map is only for the map. It doesn't affect route planning, just the visibility of chargers on the map. The route planner has separate settings for charging network preferences.

I agree that the network is improving. Kyle, the new Ford network has been working well for me. They are available at multiple dealerships and are 120kw chargers. I drive my R1T dual large from Miami to Georgia/Carolina’s fairly frequently, and I fortunately don’t experience the thermal problems to the extent you do. Is it possible that it’s worse when you keep the AC at max in the cabin while charging? Does it not have enough power to keep AC at max and cool the battery at the same time? Or maybe my ~800 miles trip isn’t long enough to really get into the heat soak. I also averaged ~2.43 miles per kwh (per electrafi) on stock 22s (70-85mph), so the tires and rack seem to be having an outsized impact on range than someone might think.

Great video as always. I am not sure why your are against the conserve mode and lower suspension. I have a large pack dual motor R1S and in FL I get 2.34 on average going 80 MPH. This gets me just over 300 miles of range on the highway. The ride is quite nice when lowered and actually makes for slightly less wind noise. I also put the aero-caps on which probably helps a bit. 1.4 miles/KWH is painful. Kyle really loves his charging stops.

Most of the apps for that provider show the prices for that site. In the case of Tesla, it even shows you the price for the different times of the day as they are cheaper depending on which time you charge. It's it's super easy. Better than a gas station since you can check the prices on the apps before you get there and can plan ahead.

Regarding the first charging stop, this is why I care about range more than anything else (audio being a close second). With 410mi of range, I can make it to Hays, then from there Columbia, staying on the Rivian network as much as possible. (The Holy Grail is 500mi of range). My point is, if I'm recommending an EV to someone, I tell them range first, then consider other features.
@mowcowbell
@mowcowbell Ай бұрын

I’m not sure I could do this trip in an EV other than a Model 3 or Y. It just takes too long to charge these trucks and the cost seems more than gasoline. I drove my Model Y from Long Island to Orlando and back this summer. With the dog with me, it was fine and reasonable priced in terms of charging costs. I got to Maryland on just the charge from my home. But this seems excessive with the stops and slowness.

Ev supercharging maybe comparable to those early days of service gas stations . There wasnt many of them and their wasnt a freeway or interstate system . Gas milage may have been comparable to the lighting . Now you had nothing to tell you were anything was untill trip maps started showing up in the 1950s . I remeber driving from new jersey to califirnia in 1983 . Alstate insurance actuallt would give a detailed trip map wih highways highlighted on my direction . The ev superchargering is like driving 70 years ago . Even in California charging can be scarce . I am amazed that you can make it work through the center of the country . Since ev adoption is light in middle america there isnt much incentive to install charging and maintain it . Thats the challange which is the chicken and the egg . They are far superior as a daily driver with home or work driving but it doest like its worth the stress going more than 8 hours. I think 3 to 4 with one charge up. I noticed even sizable cities charging is limited and you have more competition for those limited charging stations. You get to vacation destination and you are more stressed on filling up over having fun and lost time with charging cuts into the fun . Yes it can be done but its more of a novelty to see if you can as we see in this video . Actually maybe better is to have level 2 charging in you overnight stops at hotels which could get maybe 50 percent of your charging and better for your batter health . Now it can be all hit and miss . Are they availble with competition for every working charger . I mught carry emergency back like a powerstation or a generator. The generator maybe better having a fuel readily available . At least your not calling a tow truck. Now a generator may only be appropriate for a pickup truck

I have a max pack and also did a cross country trip with a max pack rental. I think it works great. I've gotten 370mi real world range on a stretch, but I think I now understand how to squeeze out closer to 400 (driving at 72mph). I just haven't experienced these kinds of issues with charging. Maybe I've been lucky. One key might be to not run the AC when charging. I know that doesn't work when traveling with a dog, but the humans can step out and have some lunch. I will admit, Kansas does get hot, so it pushes the vehicle to its limits.

I daily my Cybertruck and I cannot wait for EV stations to be just like that. Amazing. 1:02:57 (obviously the speed could be better)

I wonder if Tesla supercharger has a lower handle temperature rating when using adapters. Since they know people will use good adapters that have thermal sensors to cheap ones that don’t. Guess we won’t find out until other companies have the nacs built in.

Pro tip - Move chargers and use another adapter when Tesla charger de-rates due to heat. Dont pretend like u dont have more than one adapter

Do you think the Gen 2's with the Heat pump would be a different story on the R1T for the cabin heating and cooling?

Hi, Walter is really a big dog. A Wookiee on four legs. Kyle always dare to take a risk to go to the last possible charger. If i would do this, travelling with my wife, i would cause an nervous breakdown to her. But perhaps it is no risk anymore, nice to see charging infrastructure is improving.

I suspect Kyle is likely to leave the fridge door open when working in the kitchen, with as much as he leaves the Rivian door open when parked with the a/c going.

Can you compare the charging cost vs how much a gas car would have cost?

Time is money … the biggest expense is in extra time for charging vs. gassing up on very long road trips… I figured that a 3-week cross-country road trip would take me 3-4 days longer in a BEV than in a PHEV

Omg I thought it was just me. I’ve been having charging issues with my home charger too. It’s getting to be really annoying. It keeps stopping in the middle of the night. The other night I plugged in at 56% and when I woke up the next morning it was at 58%.

That’s a bomber. I’ve been fortunate to never have my level 2 charger stop overnight. Mine was installed by QMerit as a perk when I bought my Bolt EUV last year. Your Charger may not have been executed properly. Call them back to check it.
