To help explain what is happening in SHINee's "Tell Me What to Do" MV, the members are all playing a group of friends which also includes this girl. How I see the story is that they all have been friends with this girl for a very long time and Taemin has always been in love with her, but unfortunately, what you see is that she is in love with Minho and they are dating. However, Taemin is super jealous and his jealousy has gotten to the point where he can no longer hide his anger and disappointment -- that's why you see him acting kind of crazy and really angry. That's why you see him getting drunk and silently watching Minho and the girl with that seething, jealous look on his face. It is also why you see him crazily pick up that gun and wave it around like he is drunkenly joking with everyone and making bad choices. It's supposed to be about a group of teenagers/young 20-something guys hanging out together and partying in an abandoned warehouse or construction site, etc. You see them having fun riding around in the car together, but if you notice Taemin is sitting there jealously watching Minho and the girl and wishing it was him who she was in love with. I interpret the floating guns as a metaphor, where Taemin is surrendering to everything and he is struggling to figure out how to cope with all his feelings, etc. (Why would the guns be Taemin's idea?) You see Minho and Taemin get in a fight and Minho is essentially saying, "Hey man, it's not my fault she is in love with me and not you ... you need to back off and get over yourself ... snap out of it ... what is wrong with you?", etc. Minho always writes his own rap sections in SHINee's songs, so the rap was given that flow for a very specific reason. it is meant to be completely different than the rest of the song because it represents the anger and frustration he is feeling at that moment. So the song is called "Tell Me What To Do" because the rest of the members are pretty much saying "Tell me what to do ... What should I do to fix this problems in our friendship and how do we go back to the way we used to be?", etc. It's a coming of age story about friendship and the things that can happen in someone's life that can cause a rift between friends. In the end, you see Taemin drop the lighter, and some say the lighter is what catches the car on fire and it symbolizes the end to their youthful innocence. But you also see Minho get in the car and it blows up. Some say Taemin is so jealous that he blows up the car and kills Minho. It's definitely a darker concept, but you shouldn't feel too sad, because at this point nothing had happened with SHINee yet and it doesn't really have anything to do with this MV. It's only after the fact, that we now can give the story a deeper meaning. The only saving grace to this story is that we know that SHINee is too much of a close-knit group to ever let something like this happen to them for real and, that in terms of SHINee, this story is so far from reality that this would never happen with their friendship. Once again this was a departure from anything we have ever seen from SHINee before, and it's unlike anything they have every done as a concept for an MV. But it was exactly sHINee-like in every way. You should really watch a video of SHINee performing this song live on Jonghyun's radio program called "Blue Night". The radio show was hosted by Jonghyun. He hosted the daily radio program for 3 years. During "Tell Me What to Do" promotions the other SHINee members were guests on the show and Jonghyun had to do double duty that night as both host and guest. You should really watch this clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKa6e3yQgbWsoqc. This was my favorite performance of "Tell Me What to Do," and not only are their vocals magnificent, but it also shows you a little glimpse into their goofy fun personalities as well. You should also check out a live performance of "Tell Me What to Do." Because, even though there is no dancing in the MV, this was one of their lead promotional tracks for this repackaged album, so they performed it on music programs and in concert. This choreography is so uniquely SHINee. I think you will fall even more in love with the song, once you see the full performance. :D

You're not alone in thinking Tell Me What To Do sounds like two different songs stacked ontop of eachother - it's because of the time signature. TMWTD is in compound meter, 12/8 to be precise, in the 250bpm range. But. Compound meters are so called because they are compounded of ways to hear/count the beats. In this particular 12/8 at 250 bpm you can hear the basedrum at 125 bpm (6/4) and the singing is alternating between that and ~62 bpm (3/4) and parts of the instrumental is trucking along at ~85 bpm (4/4) all of it overlapping and playing off eachother. And that is so cool and I love it so much. There is a b-side on Everybody named One Minute More that does a similar thing. That is really one of the things I really love about kpop, they do cool technical things to the music that you don't really hear in western pop, at least not to the same extent.

I agree with you. After view they got more "organic" (I can't put it into words too hahaha) but then you went to a Japanese release where everything is different. Japanese releases are just like that cousin when she gets drunk at a family party. You never know what to expect and it's gonna blow up your mind hahaha. Nice reaction.

Tell Me What To Do is one of my favorite SHINee title tracks! The MV is crazy lol but basically Taemin liked the girl, but the girl liked Minho and Minho liked her too so they ended up together. Taemin gets jealous about it and confronts them but the girl still chooses Minho so Taemin in a fit of jealousy makes the car explode 😮 They actually talked about that when they were in Jonghyun's radio show Blue Might kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaCshJmQi8-GZ6c (they started taking about the mc at the 26 minute and Taemin mentions the fire at minute 28, although the whole thing is worth watching hehe they even performed TMWTD live)

The simplicity or complexity of SHINee MV’s would be based on the concept they are aiming for.. but indeed starting VIEW, when SHINee had more and more input.. it felt to me like MORE NATURAL..more THEM regardless if the mv is simple or playful.

You should see the behind the scenes of SHINee filming "Get the Treasure," kzbin.info/www/bejne/poLGoquoiMmasJo. I think you might find it interesting to see what was actually real people who were made to freeze in the scene, what was real set pieces and mannequins and what was CGI. You would be surprised that some of those people who you see frozen were real actors who were rigged by wires to look like time had been stopped in mid air, etc. You also really need to see SHINee's live performance of "Get the Treasure" from an SMTown concert in Japan. The choreography is so good live. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ-5gJ5-eJyjia8 Since SHINee's iconic "Odd Eye" Inkigayo comeback stage performance, kzbin.info/www/bejne/poHTapeXZZKElac, I think Key has decided that an eye patch makes him look really cool, so he brought it back for "Get the Treasure." :D But also an eye patch makes sense in the storyline because SHINee are supposed to be thieves -- they are there to "get the treasure," which is the big diamond that Jonghyun takes from the glass case. (A diamond is SHINee's symbol, so they are stealing the treasure -- the diamond -- which represents the hearts of Shawols.) Fun fact: Pirates didn't just wear eye patches because they injured one of their eyes. But eye patches were more often worn by thieves who had perfect eyesight. An eye patch helps you to see better in the dark or in low light. If you shield your eyes from bright light, when you enter a dark room and remove the eye patch your eyes adjust more quickly to the dark. This allowed pirates and thieves to be able to see better and be able to get in and get out more quickly as they go from bright daylight to darkness of a low lit room or hull of a ship, etc. An eye patch is a more practical device then you might think. ;P And as we see in Taemin's MV "Criminal," Taemin has decided to borrow Key's eye patch as well. ;) We all know Taemin stole clothes from Key's closet while Key was in the military, so he must have taken the eye patch too. (LOL, just kidding. Key's eye patch is way different than the one Taemin wears for "Criminal.") Fun fact No.2: SHINee's lightstick is also shaped like a diamond, and when you hold it up to a solid surface you see that the reflection it makes is a 5 point star -- each point representing one of the members -- so that is one reason why you see them make the star shape on the floor as part of their choreography in this song. And it's also why you often see references to stars in things that SHINee does, because they SHINe(e) like shiny stars or sparkling diamonds. You see the helicopter because, if you notice, the stage has a giant H on the floor which is the universal symbol for the designated place a helicopter lands. They are dancing on the helipad waiting for the helicopter to show up so they can make their escape -- they blew up the car, so they need a different way to get away LOL. If you notice the spotlights that are on them at that moment are actually flashlights being held by FBI agents who are trying to arrest them for stealing the treasure. This was SHINee's 5th full length Japanese album and the album was named Five so that is just one of the numerous reasons why they say "This is SHINee 5" in the song. This song and album was promoted right after their "1 of 1" album which was their 5th full length Korean album. They pretty much follow every Korean comeback with an equal Japanese comeback. Sad fact, this was SHINee's last album with Jonghyun.

SHINee live really is something else, can't wait for any more live performances you get to in the future! Also Born To Shine and Internet War in one week might kill you, good luck with that! I'm not even sure which one would be less destructive to watch first. I still want to plug Your Number, it's another Japanese mv that is safe to react to and is really one of their best imo. Tell Me What To Do is so underrated, it was the repackage single after 1 of 1 (like Atlantis was for Don't Call Me) and as usual it didn't get as much attention as the main single. I think I get what you're saying, though some of it might have been the overall change in trends for music videos, they were certainly at the forefront of it. I did have a laugh knowing what you were about to see in Get The Treasure, it's over the top in the best way. The behind the scenes video showing how they filmed it is fascinating. I can't not sing along to "this is SHINee Five and we're right by your side" every time. Eyepatch Key is a favourite, maybe someday you could watch their Odd Eye performance on patreon? A lot of their best epic sounding songs are actually Japanese, perfect concert songs. Loved this reaction! It feels strange that after this you'll be getting to The Story Of Light era which is such a change of atmosphere. I do think it would be a good idea to do Born To Shine and Internet War first!

Chuckling at your comment before the totally dramatic Get the Treasure...Tell me What to Do is one of my all time favourites..I love the juxtaposition of the bouncy melody and the darker lyrics.. although not the 2Min fight 😥..although I believe the anger and hurt is as much about the group breaking apart and not knowing what will happen, as about the girl. Doesn't want to lose his friend and the chaotic lifestyle...Very Peter Pan/ Lost boys to me...GtT is just fabulous and delicious...plus eyepatch Key ..😁Shinee have 5 very unique voices. It constantly surprises me that their clearly different voices just create an amazing something else when they harmonise and blend together..I love the message too..you can't buy love regardless as to much money you have..I'll find the link for Born to Shine and Internet Wars (which is a cover version by Jjong and Taemin)....I hope you survive them...🤣

I wish to add links to a few of the Internet War stages. The one on fofficina's site has a split screen view and kind of loses the ultimate moment when Jjong and Taemin meet on stage, so to get the effect, you may wish to try the SW II Hong Kong performance first: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5jTXqmLmNVkatk Another good stage is Tokyo, which focuses more on Taemin before they meet up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYnSk3-LoL-nkNk And for your ease, here's the fofficina link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXTGqWeshbaoo9E But a thanks to Hannah Diamond. Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. I am so excited to start watching ur Shinee content. I recently got to watch a reaction with all the MVs. So i am halfway caught up i think. But now its relisten time. Plus, I love to hear what u think of each song. Taemin bias here and OT5. Tell Me What To Do has so much feels. Love it. Adore songs with feels. Get The Treasure was my 1st listen. The MV was cool. I thought BTS were the only ones who used frozen sections in their MVs but i guess Shinee was 1st with the concept maybe. Cool. This song is not for me. Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army💟

Maybe don’t react to Born To Shine and Internet War if you’re not that into Shinee yet… It might be too much for you. If you do react to Internet War, you should at least read into the reasoning behind the performance. It wasn’t meant to be fan service at all but a lot of casual watchers just assume it is.
