I got a cruiser bike with a coaster brake hub that didn't work. The bike was free, and I thought I could fix it. In this video, I take the hub apart, clean it, lubricate it, replace the bearings and put it bake together again. Now it works great. The hub is a Bendix 70. The bike is a Ross Central Park.

I know this is an old video, but I've got to say thanks RJ. This is what I needed to see. Being retired I needed another hobby, and buying old bikes, servicing them, and giving them to kids in the neighborhood was what I chose. I've learned to service the crank, front spindle, and headset already. The rear hub I saved to last as I figured it would be a bit more technical. But, this video made it look easy. Also, the first thing I learned was "Grease is good" after doing my first crank. :)

Greetings fellow coasterbrake enthusiasts. I am the chairman of the British Coasterbrake Bicycle Club. One handy tip, if you can get hold of any Anti Scuffing Paste mix a small amount of this in with a heavy duty, high temp extreme pressure grease. I recommend 90% Lucas Xtra Heavy Duty grease and 10% Anti Scuffing Paste. Rocol is the main brand in Blighty. This paste is for lubricating press dies and preventing galling when pressing roller bearing crankshafts together. It is good stuff, it's also pricey stuff. If you have a roller clutch coaster brake a light smear on the roller track is enough and use oil in this area or the rollers will slip. Lucas Red N Tacky grease is ideal for bearings and use the paste/grease mix on braking surfaces, ramps, dragsprings and worm threads. Axle threads need a bit of copperslip grease as that left hand cone can get hot after a good, long downhill and when ridden in the rain, something we have a lot of here, is all too happy to seize onto the axle threads. Happy coasting and remember sometimes the way forward is to pedal backwards.

Someone a distance from me is asking if I can explain how to do a coaster brake so I've been watching for the best video on youtube to send them. This guy is messy and very awkward like a back yard mechanic, but he gets the job done. This video is 7 years old I'm sure he's gotten better. Anyone looking to learn how to service a coaster brake, even if you have a different brand, this video is still worth watching.

Hi, I've learned a ton watching your videos! I have a suggestion for setting the bearing preload on solid axles. I use a vice grip or a locked out nut on the bottom side while I tighten the cone nuts on the top, that way when you are tightening the top locknut the whole axle doesn't rotate. ;)

I definitely needed to see how you overhaul a coaster brake hub cause the cruiser bike I bought from someone used the turned in into a motorized bike with an 80cc/66cc bicycle motor kit and apparently rode it pretty hard and I have to overhaul the hub and decide weather I want to take off the entire motor kit clean it up and make it an ordinary beach cruiser bike again and possibly resell it once I get a different bike or clean it up rebuild the motor or get a new motor but upgrade the bike with a front brake

The wear on the underside of the bearing race surface is indicative of too much end play ,probably from the same issue that made the stiffness of the spreader threads able to override the friction drag placed on the drag surface.Drag from the spring steel band should have let it thread in to brake and out to propel. HARD GREASE STAYS OUT WHERE IT DOES AS MUCH DAMAGE AS NO GREASE ON BRNGS. Very good video. I'm old, I like coaster brakes . Almost always fixable, usually no money!

i was riding my dads bike with a coaster brake and it started to make grinding noises when the brakes were applied. soon after this the hub started to have slipping problems both when pedaling and braking. after this the hub shell literally broke and spokes fell out. ever seen anything like this happen before? i've had problems with hubs in the past but never a catastrophic failure like this!

I have just done this. I got it all to fit back after three tries. But now it doesnt turn as smoothly as it did. I can feel it kind of jerk sometimes when I spin it. It feels like a few ball bearings dont roll smootly. But this wasnt so before I disassembled it. Is it just a lack of grease? Im pretty sure I resassembled it right after the third try.

hey RJ i've watched this video maybe 5 times first time bike mechanic here and had a problem with a clicking noise in the hub, learned the inner basic mechanics of the inside, troubleshooted that the brake pads were obviously causing some friction, disasembled regerased still the clicking, and what it was was the Spring, the spring had been compacted during factory assembly i guess, so i opened it up and expanded the spring so the pads could fully disengage with the Driver, maybe this might help someone in the future, the spring wasn't disengaging from being too tight from the factory, i expanded with a pliers, packed with high temp grease and it's not clicking anymore.. yet thanks

The coaster brake on our bike hub for some reason is engaging when you pedal forward. A half turn on the wheel when you pedal and it is locked. Yet, if you spin the wheel it will move freely. This started all of a sudden. At first the wheel seemed a little hard to pedal, but after about a 10 minute bike ride it now will not pedal forward because the brake is engaged apparently. Any ideas? Thanks and very well done video. Phil

I know of those coaster braike/kick shift hubs but I'm talking a more traditional. Basically my rear wheel taco'd, a direct replacement can be bought but i'm looking to see what other options exist since the bike is a sort of 'hey i got it to tinker with' thing.
