The 5 Miles of Hell trail located in southern Utah has long been known as one of the toughest and most challenging trails an off-road motorcyclist can hope to tackle. Completing this trail on a modern dirt bike is a tall order on it's own, but how about taking a vintage dirt bike bought for $500 through the gauntlet that is 5 Miles of Hell? Well, in our 5MOH $500 Motorcycle Challenge we set out to answer that question. In this video, we follow on-board with Wes as he takes his vintage 1980 Yamaha YZ125 through the daunting sandstone playground that is the 5 Miles of Hell.

It’s the rider, not the bike! Obviously technology has come a long way to make things easier and more comfortable, but those old bikes can do about anything. Awesome

YZ? omg. The suspension would come in handy on that route, but a DT175 would maybe be easier. Or, ideally, IT. Something that was very popular in this part of the world (New Zealand) back then was an XR185 or XR200 motor in an RM125 frame. That was an extremely competitive combo in slower and trickier going.

Love it, YZ and you did pretty well considering it’s a 125, it also sounded mint, running sweet, the age or bike shouldn’t be an issue they were well capable back then, as long as it’s well looked after, which that looks pretty mint, but power delivery was hard hitting it’s an MX bike, so you did well, love that wheel coming up lol. Keep this series going, love to see an 1981 Full Floater RM 125 possibly (82or 83 essentially the same) my fav era of Suzuki, Full Floaters were awesome. 🤙 or An IT 175/200/250 or even a 490 83 onwards sic🤙

Sounds like my Yammy IT200s. I had the 79 DT175, IT175K and still have the 200s (with an answer Roost Boost inline torque curve modifier). The IT 'retired' about 10yr ago when small cracks appeared under the frame that I could put a knuckle through at the end of the ride.. and the coil broke down (I hand wound it about 10 years before that...). Now I have a 97 & 99 YZ250... hmmm I wonder if I have a yammy fetish... though I haven't ridden for a while, lately I'm doing downhill MTB'ing. (I've also had a 75' SL250 motorsport, SL125, XR250A, Gasgas250EC 97' and a Gemini 80 & 125 (Shin San Ton made, circa 1975 copy of the DT).

It's hard to believe you chose a bike with almost no low end power for that ride but the fact that you killed it on that bike is amazing the only reason you were able to do that is because you had a secret weapon and it was that cutting edge seat cover you guys should start selling those at Rocky Mountain it will revolutionize the industry.

The thing that surprised was being an air cooled bike it didn't seriously overheat with the slow speeds?, love to see this done on a cr125 from same year and comparison, rode a yz250 from same year, the power delivery was bruuutal, like getting punched in the guts, it was beefed up though💥🥴🤗
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 4 жыл бұрын
Trials bikes are very slow, and existed before water cooling too. They never overheated to the point of failure like water cooled bikes do if you lose the water, but they did lose some power when they got hot.
