Just ignore his review. He trashes the MOTU and Focusrite and calls them toys. He doesn't like the MOTU only because he didn't like the feel of an XLR input clip and a little bit of dust on the front panel. Wow! Seriously? Dust? Let's review a product based on some specs of dust we don't like because that makes sense. And he didn't even call MOTU customer service in an attempt to properly diagnose the noise issue to see if it was a defective unit or a misconfiguration issue in his computer setup. Clearly, he was all emotional about the RME and had no intention of creating a fair review of the other two products.
@MikeLuke4 жыл бұрын
Interesting comparison, thanks for the upload. The biggest and most obvious jump is of course the one from the Focusrite to the Motu. So I was more interested to hear the difference between the Motu and the RME. What I've heard (using my open-back AKG K702 headphones): - The RME sounds "cleaner" with more clarity in the upper mids and highs. - The Motu adds a layer of warmth and glue and "Mojo", both in the low end and high end. The transients in the low end sound softer on the edges. - Having that said, the RME for me seems to be the more honest interface which adds no coloring whatsoever. That's a personal preference in the end, I guess. But adding the build quality and the stable drivers, the RME is the winner for me here.

Thanks for putting this up, there is very little YT content on the 828es. Picking mine up tomorrow! Considered the RME unit as well and while it's an excellent box, I couldn't justify double the price for the very little increase in quality.

First of all: thanks for testing! 828ES is both my sound and functionality favorite after a lot of comparison and everyday use, for many reasons. I use it with Neumann nearfields and AKG K812 headphones and prefer the MOTU sound quality A LOT above that of the Focusrite I used before. The RME is fine as well, but I still would prefer the MOTU, even if they had the same price. Using a Microkorg among other keyboards myself, I doubt it's the most convincing source as reference for a comparison. A Kronos, or a quality synth like the Prophet 6 would have shed more light on the slight sound/sound quality differences between the cards IMO.

I have an old MOTU 896 Firewire unit that has served me well for years. No, it doesn't have the latest in processors etc but for my application, thats not necessary, It has worked day in day out for at least 10 - 12 years except for about a year ago it wouldn't fire up, I contacted MOTU to see if it could be repaired for a reasonable cost or if I would have to go shopping. As far as a the click noise, run your main output to a monitor controller so you don't hear clicks, or take your headphones out of the matrix. Just my opinion.

One important thing - the drivers on the RME are rock solid. This seems like a small thing but it's not. I started with the Focusrite Scarlett but had many issues over time with crashes, audio not being routed correctly, and needing to work to get it to just work. Ordered the RME Fireface UFX II - and bam, no problems. The routing is also super flexible (although it took me a good hour or two to figure out the first time). I love my RME - no driver problems, ever. It's just something I don't need to worry about now. Also, I've been able to use the ADAT functionality to expand it and get even more I/O which is part of what you pay for with the additional price.

MOTU makes the same stuff at a fraction of the cost. I have the 828ES and the drivers are very rock solid on Windows. I almost bought the RME UFX but glad I didn't. MOTU offers more bang for the buck as I see no reason to over spend 1500 more for the same thing.

I recently bought the RME UFX+ and came from a Steinberg interface. I agree with all your points and think they apply to the UFX+ the same. RME headroom and HF response is remarkable.
@fiascoseven27966 жыл бұрын
The Motu had the most cohesive upper mid range which allowed the G-B-E Strings to appear more even and balanced. It also had the better string to string balance without drifting into muddy / boomy sonic territorries, I wished it had a tad more 'air' in its response though. The RME had the widest extensions in respect to the pure frequency response, more low- and more high end. The frequency response isn't accurate though, The treble strings never appeared to sound uniform enough in regards to amplitude and dispersion of harmonic density. Even though the sonics were pleasing, the RME lacked a tight time response which will be a detriment when handling percussive sound sources, because the transient detail will not be fully phase neutral. But the treble extension had a nice sheen to it, sort of a velvety smooth overlay which will suit vocal performances and other non transient sources. The Scarlett on the other side had a degree of 'echoing' in its signal which occurs as consequence of inproper filtering during the A/D conversion stage. Cost saving measures I suppose.

Great Review, My personal experience with the MOTU AVB interfaces,I have a 16A,1248 and the 828x.What is the big advancement over all the interfaces is the AVB Streams with multiple computers and AVB interfaces.I can use my Mac Book Pro 2013 with an 828x,using the (16) channels of ADAT I/O running any software say Komplete,.Route as many Instruments to separate mixer channels to the 16A or 1248 ADAT I/O.I Run Studio One or Logic on My 2013 MAC Tower with the 16A and 1248 via Thunder Bolt yielding a total of 128 AVB streams to my Software.My 16A, i run a mixer config.via Triton Studio,Roland XP 60,Roland Fantom 8,Korg Kronos,Roland Integra 7,Alesis QSR Rack and,Yamaha Motif Rack XS.All these analog sounds can be sent to the Mac Pro running the DAW software via AVB.Control all the Midi and Sync via MOTU Midi Express XT.I use 2 Express XT's, too much Equipment to list.Last i can run all the analog outputs to my SPL Mix Dream for 16 channels of analog summing,this is priceless i can add another summing mixer if needed.On the RME you get 8 outs with 2 you have to use for Monitor Playback.On the MOTU's an awesome 8 outs with 2 dedicated Monitor Outs.The MOTU AVB Interfaces have completely integrated my growth of my equipment over 40yrs.And at the price,it was a no brainer for me.All the other interfaces are great depending your studio size and needs.I did a lot of research on interfaces and the MOTU Series are the only out there "my opinion" that's trying to suffice to the broad range of studio applications.The MOTU AVB Discovery App with its Routing capability surpasses any thing out there on the market.The 828es was just released and i was floored, this model is so advanced for the price.This interface can be used as a 5.1 surround sound interface. A light bulb went off and said"I can use this with my Mackie Big Knob for more monitor support and an interface for my 003 control surface if needed. Finally to add, i purchased an Antelope Audio Orion32+,$3000.00. Pristine converters,for the sound out of the box untouchable. Were it failed was the routing software.For the bugs,i needs a can of RAID.Back to Sweet Water it went..It's nowhere worth that price. Can't stand up against the MOTU Discovery software or RME Total Mix software. Now, after listing to those great converters your ears will adjust and you will not notice the difference in quality of sound if you purchase something else with just as good quality converters.Don't let high end prices suck you end, i've learned. I just ordered an 828es to complete my arsenal of interfaces. My choice of Interfaces,Hands Down MOTU AVB. You will not know what your missing until you purchase one!

I honestly heard (with my FLAT RESPONSE AT phones) the quality go in the same order you demoed them - they all are totally acceptable, and really, price and what features... BUT sonically.. I actually heard a much more pronounced low end and wider stereo spectrum in the motu much more apparently compared to the Focusrite (along with the mid that everyone else seemed to also notice).. I think the RME somehow sounded like it managed to be a cross between colored and transparent.. maybe that "colored" vibe I'm getting is coming from the larger, apparently more rounder tone from the RME, respectively? (I don't have a ton of experience with Vintage Valves - you know the variable standard - i.e. since all valve pre's are different units every time you switch one on!).. But I've heard a lot of people on the PC side of the desk saying MOTU's software is about as flimsy as the hardware that you pointed out.. I own an Apogee Duet, and Behringer UMC-404HD (it's actually a great 2nd interface for a bedroom home studio.. don't knock it.. they've stepped their game way up at Behringer!), but I'm in the market for maybe Presonus1818, or Motu 828mk3, or the 18i20 from focusrite... and I'm a little disappointed in that quality of the buttons and knobs you point out on the motu... I'm use to sequence on hardware keyboards and an MPC and man soon as I hooked up my Presonus Atom drum Pad controller and trigger some drum samples in Studio One, it littery felt like I was still using my hardware MPC Drum Machine with no noticable latency even at 128 sample buffer setting. David Gnozzi from MixBusTV was the one that sold me on to MOTU after watching his reviews. I might snag a 16A as my outboard expands more. I can hook both the AVB interfaces up with single ethernet cable similar to Focusrites RedNet dante interfaces.

@@eman0828 Awesome setup, Eman! We're really loving the hybrid studio, as well. I love that the on-screen matrix routing in the newer MOTU units effectively turns outboard/hardware racks (Pres, EQs, Comps, Reverb, etc) into basically real world "plugins" in terms of how they interact with the DAW. The MOTU matrix routing handles the signal path, and all we have to do is click what path we want on the individual channel in the DAW. While, this only allows for one hardware instance to be used at a time vs near infinite repeatability with a software plugin, I find it is very, very useful when trying to shape a sound with hardware after being recorded. Example: Record a vocal direct to interface to DAW and then afterward, use the matrix routing to try that vocal in different hardware preamps in the studio. When you find the one you like, press record and re-amp the vocal through the hardware however you like. I hope that all made sense. Haha.

Good overview, thanks. I thought the MOTU sounded best just by a hint on my system. I think the RME and MOTU are just meant to mostly be left on. In all honesty, given that the differences are ever so slight when all the elements are put into the context of the mix, a slight 1.5-3.0db boost here and there would be an easy and cheaper solution. The RME sounded a little more rounded and full, especially in comparison to the Focusrite, it had more pleasing low-mids, but let's not forget one thing: Is it really a $1,650 difference in terms of the Focusrite vs RME? Clearly not.

I can only tell you what I experienced (and the people I did the comparison as welll). I don't know what exactly they changed, maybe it was "just" the headphone outs, but the same project/song, with the same headphones sounded a lot (!!) cleaner, fatter and with more detail on Gen 2. Even people that don't care for sound could clearly tell the difference. And believe me, the difference between Scarlett Gen 1 and Gen 2 was waaay more obvious than between those 3 (not saying there is none)

What about latency and how reliable and up to date the drivers are? I tend to use only line inputs rather than preamps for the most part running synths and drum machines into it. I absolutely hate it when my drum machines and synth parts are delayed or don't sync up with my vsts and in the box parts of the track. I also hate it when my soundcard fails to be recognised, has drop outs, glitches or other driver issues. I could afford the RME UC, UCX or 802 but I really think it might be complete overkill for my needs as a home producer who might want to use the card for the occasional dj or live performance gig. Everyone just says but RME - best quality, best sound, best drivers, best support. I just wonder If I have to or if i can be satisfied with a cheaper card. I'm not too fussed about the 5% difference in sound I may or may not notice - it's the drivers, latency and software integration i'm more concerned with. I already got burned once buying cheap with echo audio cards which gave me high latency, glitches, dropouts and now is discontinued and no longer recognised by my laptop. Thanks for your thoughts.
@MadebyMiike6 жыл бұрын
Hi! "my drum machines and synth parts are delayed or don't sync up with my vsts and in the box parts of the track." Do you mean software drums or synths? Because if you mean hardware, all of those units tested have direct in/direct out, so you hear no latency whatsoever if you jam with your hardware stuff to some tracks from your DAW. It's a little bit different with software vsti latency. I only tested Superior Drummer 3.0 (smaller kit, roughly 1 gb of data) and I found to be RME the fastest experience of those 3. The Scarlett was fast as well without clicks or pops (sorry, can't remember sampel rates or ms anymore), while I had trouble with the MOTU - but I bet that's simply because of the old browser on my laptop (surfing the web there is a slog, so naturally a soundcard that uses the browser as it's mix control will suffer too). Is there no way that you can try out one of the second gen Scarletts? Some store that lets you return stuff within a month or so, no questions asked? I feel you simply wouldn't need a RME, but I can't guarantee that a Scarlett will work on your PC/Laptop. These things are best tried out...
@MadelnMachines6 жыл бұрын
AllaboutafriendONLINE I meant if I'm routing midi notes out of the DAW to a synth or drum machine it lags behind the audio / vsts playing in my DAW. Yeah I could try it and just return it if it doesn't work out.

Hey Behruz, I think you missunderstood me. My personal overall winner is the RME - for the quality of it's hardware and software, but it's very expensive, while the Focusrite and the MOTU are both number 2. Motu has better features while the Focusrite has a more solid build. Soundwise they all come close, you definitely can achieve great results with a Scarlett 2nd gen! Just know that 2nd gen units work best starting from Windows 8.1 (they don't officially support Windows 8). Hope this helps, cheers, Mike!

There really is no this vs. that anymore when it comes to professional interfaces. Unlike 10 years ago when the whole digital age was in its infancy. ALL of the interfaces sound great today and most of them are using the same chipset (converters). What it really comes down to today, is I/O needs. RME has always had the edge with its drivers, but that is no longer an issue today because Windows and Mac are both on top of their game. Every since Windows 7-64 its just a none issue. All of these interfaces sound great, they just have different workflows. Good video,

Read the reviews on most interfaces there are complaints about poor driver support or ongoing development , even in 2018. This applies to most manufactures. You will find less complaints on Steinberg and RME, or the ones that continue to provide updates and development support.

Thank you very much for making this terrific comparison video. Currently I've been looking at all 3 of those manufacturers for an interface to replace my TC Electronics Studio Konnekt 48. My main issues with the TC have been poor build quality(it's been sent off to repair 3 times.) very poor driver support for it's proclaimed excellent firewire interface(it took them about 2.5 years to get a driver that seemed to work in a stable way. At least they continued support for the unit I guess.) and now I'm having issues with the gains on all channels so I'm keen to try another manufacturer. I've been debating the validity of obtaining an RME due to the higher price tag but as your video clearly demonstrates, build quality is much better. My only other issue is that while RME have an excellent driver support for there hardware, there customer support seems to be a touch lacking(I'm still awaiting a response from 2 days ago on what Thunderbolt card they recommend for a windows PC for example. This is important as on the TC I had a lot of drama's until I obtained a Firewire card with a TI chipset for example. I don't want to repeat that experience with an interface like RME that should function flawlessly out of the box.). So I guess RME will have me sold if I get a decent response from them. If they don't replay within the week, then I'll have to assume they don't care and I'll look at the Focusrite range. Thank you for your excellent overview it's helped me steer towards the final 2 decisions in my new audio interface setup.

Hi Sean. This is an interesting topic and one that I have thought about recently. In a sense I feel we are spoiled these days that we contact the producer of something and demand an answer. Imagine, just 10 years ago, if you wanted to buy a new Mazda, you would have never even thought about writing Mazda Japan and ask them something about the car, no, you probably would have asked your dealer. And maybe I am oldschool, but I still rather ask my dealer (or consult some forums) than to ask the manufacturer of a product some questions. My point is...well, I don't really know what my point is, I just find that funny that we take end-customer support for granted, when in fact, we technically don't even buy from RME/Focusrite/MOTU/whathaveyou, we buy from a dealer of choice :-) Anyways, can't tell you how long RME costumer support takes usually, I hope (and after a couple of weeks of working with my RME, am hopefull) that I will never need them! Thanks for watching! Mike
@seancurtin51316 жыл бұрын
It would be great to get product knowledge like that from the local dealer but sadly they simply shrug at me. Also knowing the best interface to connect a product they designed would surely be a question only they themselves could answer(there test setups should have yielded a result.) This said the more I look into Thunderbolt interfaces for the PC, the more it's looking like I'm going to need an entire motherboard upgrade to utilise Thunderbolt as add on cards seem to be simply interfaces for motherboards that support Thunderbolt, it's not simply a case of obtaining an upgrade card like the old days it would seem. (That said evidently cards are coming out.) Thought I'd share that as Thunderbolt is so new to the PC world that it's sadly like Firewire before it going to be MAC supported first and PC supported 2nd. I wish audio interface designers wouldn't assume all musicians use MAC's because honestly it would be a small fraction of the overall recording world out there.

The sound quality is great I wouldn't do RME Money for an 2% better quality lol. And on top of that at the end of the day it is really up to the audio engineer to deliver the mix of the song the quality the feel ect... Start with learning how to get great at mixing never look at what everyone else got and use what you have. The Motu is an better choice for the money and sound. it has a lot of options on this unit and the headphone amps is loud lol. Shootouts like this is not real world test you never know what people are doing behind the camera so never trust it. Best way to do is get hands on with it and make your decisions from there like I did.

And... MOTU has a far better warranty program than RME. With MOTU, the first 2 years are free, and out-of-warranty is just a flat $99 fee to fix anything for life. RME has a 2-year limited warranty for the USA and 5-year limited warranty for Germany. RME's warranty comes with a lot of exceptions, out-of-warranty costs are all on you and is supported by a third party and not RME. The MOTU warranty is simple, hassle-free, and much cheaper for repairs while the RME warranty is not.

You can't go wrong with a MOTU M2 or M4. The M Series marketed toward the Home recording and DJ market. You don't need to spend a lot on an interface these days. I was worried about the Quartet OLED giving out, that's why I sold it. The MOTU M4 is very nice to operate (e.g. stereo linking by long-pressing MON1 button) without an app. I find the beed for a powered hub annoying, the M6 or ULMK5 would cure that, though. Sound quality is ok, however DAC headphone monitoring AKG Q701 & old 240 DF) can sound a bit boxy. Was better on Apogee and RME. Looking for ideas: Really looking for a new interface. The Apogee Symphony Desktop is visually the sexiest interface I know. Would also consider UCX II, MOTU M6 or UltraLite, Sound devices MixPre6, ...??
