End card: "Is this the first Famicom game with toilets?" No, at the very least Deja Vu prominently featured a toilet in the women's room stall. It was cracked and leaking water, which is supposed to be a clue that Mrs. Sternwood was placed on it. Uninvited also had functional bathrooms including toilets.

Of course the toilet innovation would come from foreign games. 😃

7:20 - I like how the cover keeps the theme of the fretful green dragon "oh no what's he doing? What's he gotten me into?" On some of these remake games they redraw the character in a (then)modern art style so it doesn't jump out as being old. So it's neat to compare. 5:57 - A Soup Genie Approaches! Command?

Great video. I'm currently working on an achievement set for this game, and I appreciated the insight into its development. One thing I would've mentioned is that the game is seemingly self-aware about its absurd over-difficulty, so it gives you the Falun Shield relatively early, which heals you by a large amount every time it's used, infinitely. Can't think of any other RPGs that just hand the player an infinite heal button!

I kept alternating between thinking "oh that sounds neat" and laughing at how bad the ideas actually turned out to be.

This is the superior Dragon Quest. I'd rather go on a quest with a dragon than be sent on a quest to kill a dragon.

As rough around the edges... or make that rough around the *everything* as this game is, and how behind the times it is as a single hero DQ1 style RPG in 1990, I totally appreciated how out of left field it is in terms of themes, mechanics and storytelling. It somehow ended up becoming one of my favorite 8-bit RPGs, just one that I can't recommend to anyone due to it being borderline kusoge. The surreal final sequence of the game leading up to the last boss almost makes the NES RPG grind worth it on its own, it's got pure Mamoru Oshii all over it.

4:45 Is that where the story of Ash's Charizard comes from?

wow I guess I'm still getting used to these JRPGs having big-time anime names attached to it... for me it started with Chrono Trigger but apparently it was far from the first time! 4:54 LOL! had some good ideas but IDK about the sound of that final dungeon I mean six hours.... yikes.

Honestly, it's Dragon Quest I again, just with a dragon companion. This game has some interesting stuff, like the open-ended nature of it, neat cutscenes right before the bosses, the whole dragon mechanic... but it's just so darn cheap and ugly for 1990. The 2nd SFC entry is also middling at best from what I've played, probably that's why there were just 2.

I think it's closer to DQ2, but it is painfully backward. There's so many RPG's at the start of 1990 that were better options than this.

I'd like to see someone do an english translated playthrough of this one. It seems interesting but I'm totally lost on where to go lol.

I played through both the Japanese and English-patched versions. I uploaded the ending for the English version.

@@Doommaster1994 Any idea how to not get a green dragon? I keep feeding it but the stats didn't seem to go up. The toys work though.

This sounds like another of those games that are interesting rather than good. Incidentally, I have also seen the name translated as "Samsara Naga", which would make more sense from my perspective.

That's probably correct. "N" and "m" as a syllable ending use the same character in Japanese and the current romanization tends to just stick with "n", but you'll find a few places where "m" is more appropriate.

This game is so painful, I'd rather play Indora no Hikari! Other 8bit RPGs by Advance/Victor are a tad better while being as innovative and unique as this piece of dragon dung :)
