kAN's comment about grade in relation to aircraft approach angles is interesting. Most commercial aircraft are certified for 2.75-3.5% for precision instrument approaches. Another point to mention about brakes (especially tread brakes, as they are still very common on most American trains and on some European trains), is that when the brake shoes get too hot, especially under heavy braking, they experience something called "brake fade". Basically the brakes get so hot that they're no longer effective at actually slowing down the train, and as a result the braking power is greatly diminished. This is a massive problem because it usually happens going downhill or under heavy load, when the brakes are working their hardest, and when you REALLY need to stop. This is also part of the reason why a lot of modern European and Asian (and some American) EMU/DMU trains and some locomotives have disc brakes like automobiles as opposed to the old-fashioned tread brakes, because disc brakes generally perform better under heavy braking and are less susceptible to brake fade.

Oh and if you want the BEST narrow gauge mountain experience: Mount Washington Cog Railway. It's 4' 8" so technically narrow by 1/2" so you could get away with running a standard wheelset if you wanted to in the gauge. Russian and Finnish trains have the same 4mm gap and used to interchange. But standard gauge equipment could not handle the grade. 37% on Jacob's ladder, averaging 25%, and using a Marsh rack system. From my understanding (and I last rode steam there when I was 3, so I'm impressed I remember this tidbit) the fireman shovels about a ton of coal on the three mile run up. It's about an hour of nearly-constant coal shoveling, opening the door every 20 seconds. The locomotives are actually articulated 0-2-2-0s, despite being tiny little workhorses that make a massive sound. Steam still runs 1 trip most mornings during operating season.

To answer Kan about airliners: Approaches to landing are all 3° (5.25%). I have seen a few steep approaches as much as 5.5° (9.6%) in mountainous or city terrain but those are pretty rare. 3° is the standard. Source: me! I have an airline transport pilot license
@Astrolex12 Жыл бұрын
And to add to that, an airplane should be in a "dirty" configuration to follow approach paths. This means having the wheels and flaps extended to increase drag and control your speed. If you fly a 3° slope "clean" (wheels and flaps retracted) you'll find it very hard to control your speed to a reasonable approach speed and end up way too fast. It's therefore common practice to descend (fast) to an altitude below your glide slope (3° approach path), then level off the airplane to slow down to a reasonable speed where you can dirty the airplane (wheels and flaps have a max speed for extension) and then intercept the 3° glide slope from below
@VestedUTuber Жыл бұрын
So, a bit of advice... increase the grade in the leadup to the first bridge across the valley after the helper station, then you can decrease the grade of that bridge. Add a second loop so you can pull out of that helix higher up. At the "turnaround" point before the lookout bridge you can probably build another helix to reduce the grade there and then reduce the grade of the lookout bridge as well. Due to the extra helix loops you can probably get the average grade of the whole thing to about 4% - still pretty ridiculous but a lot more manageable with the equipment you have. Alternately, you can commit to buying a Shay and slowboating it the whole way up. As for Mallets pivoting like that, I have a G-scale model of SEG 104, one of the big Hanomag meter-gauge Mallets from the South German Railway, and while it doesn't really have that whole "I heard you're talkin' shit" look to it because it doesn't have the huge lamp base on the front truck, it still articulates pretty far on an LGB R1 (645mm radius, or about 14.5 scale meters in European Gm) curve.

Geared locomotives in the West could and did do grades this steep as a way of life. Some grades brought in another consideration you have not mentioned, the crown sheet factor. Trains would made up to keep the locomotives pointed uphill to keep water on the crown sheet. Also, and on the safe side, the loco would be on the uphill side of the train to keep the drawbars tensioned. If you get a runaway, the crew was safer that way. Of course, I can’t see you could uncouple a tensioned drawbar!! 😮

Well.....there was one railway in the UK that had the stone age policy of small engines. The Midland Railway in the UK was the only railway that used small engines (with two exceptions being the SDJR 7F 2-8-0s and Big Bertha) and the policy stayed that way until the LMS came about in the 1923. Once that happened, the smaller engines were relegated to the lighter trains and lighter branch lines on what was the original Midland Railway route (one exception was the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, which had to have two engines on the trains, as the grades went as steep as 1-in-50 *don't know what that is in percentage* and when the Standard 5s and Standard 9F's came along, they could do the run with one engine, but that wouldn't last too long).
