Jeff Healy, born in 1966, is the guitar player. He lost his sight at 1. At 3 he started playing guitar & developed his style of playing on his lap. He was most popular in the 80's & 90's. In 2008, he died of cancer at age 41. The first movie I saw Sam Elliot in was in 1985's Mask with Cher. I recommend it. It was great to see it again. Enjoyed your reaction & commentary..

"Road House." - Peter Griffin Fun Fact: According to Kelly Lynch, whenever Bill Murray sees her sex scene with Patrick Swayze on television, he calls her husband, Mitch Glazer, to tease him about it. Roundhouse Kick Fact: According to Sam Elliott, all of the actors did their own stunts. They were all trained by Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, a holder of nine black belts in nine different disciplines. Urquidez believed so much in Patrick Swayze's abilities, that he suggested Swayze become a competitive kickboxer. Music Enthusiast Fact: The band playing at the start of the movie is Cruzados. After the band disbanded, lead singer Tito Larriva formed the band Tito & Tarantula, which is the band that played at the Titty Twister in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996).

I think one thing that really elevates this film is how subtle the "warrior" trope is handled, I mean Doc tells Daulton he could end up an old cripple and he blows her off, because if he keeps fighting, it means he will one day suffer Wade's fate, you can't win forever. In many ways the film operations like a Western or Samaurai film.

In an interview Jimmy's actor did years later, he claims the fight between him and Dalton was real. That they just went for it. He said he had no respect for Swayze because he was the dancer guy. He used an example of them filming that scene, Swayze tapping him with a kick and getting back in stance. He told Swayze that wouldn't work and to actually kick him. The next take, Swayze kicked him so hard it knocked him off his feet.

"Miss thing over here, dressed like a picnic" Well, she is a snack 😉 Roadhouse is one of those iconic 80's movies. It's raunchy, cheesy, incredibly violent, and so much fun! Patrick Swayze is fantastic as Dalton. He's so slick and easy-going until pushed too far, then you're done. "He'll seal your fate!" For the origin of Swayze's heartthrob status (and a lot of others) - The Outsiders (1983), directed by Francis Ford Coppola

A crazy thing about the end of this film: when I rented it, I got to the scene when the guys start firing at the car, which goes over the fence and explodes, and my Dad says "there you go, end of the film, he dies". It turns out he saw some promo version which was doing the rounds in a bar, and that's where the promo version ended. This promo was heavily pirated, and loads of people thought the film ended like this. I have since had this confirmed by a lot of people who saw said pirated version at the time and were amazed years later to see that the film continues after that!

I wouldn’t say Point Break is Swayze’s best movie by far, it is one of his best ones. Sam Wheat in Ghost was a very difficult role to play for an actor, since he cannot interact with most other characters, but has to focus mainly on reactive behaviour. Most other actors that were initially considered for the role turned it down. I think Point Break is right up there with Ghost and Dirty Dancing. And City of Joy. Jay, check that one out too, it’s a lesser known Swayze one, but a very, very good.

I love that you are mostly focusing on older gems from the 80’s and early 90’s. One I would love to draw your attention to is ”White Nights” from 1985. It is available used on DVD, but it’s not widely known, so you might have to look for it. However, it is a must-see movie starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. It has a great soundtrack too (featuring Phil Collins & Lionel Richie). I won’t give you any spoilers about the plot, but please do check it out!

This movie is a bizarre animal. It's obviously a "bad movie," it's about *kung-fu cowboy bouncers!* The central conceit is completely preposterous... but it's so entertaining! It's not camp, or a spoof or anything... there's is a self-awareness to it, but it never winks at the audience... everyone in the cast plays it straight and gives a sincere performance as actual people living in this weird universe... For a "bad movie" though, it is so well made, top to bottom. Like the script is the best script about cowboy kung-fu bouncers that could possibly be written. And it turns out to be surprisingly deep and sincere to a lot of the core beliefs of martial arts philosophy. And then they got Sam Elliot and The Jeff Healy Band and they just made the best kung-fu cowboy bouncer movie they could and actually made a *good* "bad-movie." In retrospect, it's no more ridiculous than the assassin's hotel in John Wick, and these days establishing a kung-fu cowboy world would just be called "universe building" but back then and over the years, it got a lot of skewering for being an SNL-sketch-level concept. The thing is, as those years go by, it just keeps getting more popular, and not just for "so bad it's good" 80's cheese value.

What I've always really liked is that Dalton isn't what you expect, especially from an 80s action star. The scene when he first arrives at the Double Deuce and just watches all of the mayhem around him is a real surprise because you expect him to jump right in and show everyone what he was capable of. Instead, he's calm, patient and tries to avoid unnecessary violence, which makes the movie stand out from other 80s action movies. BTW, not an action movie but also starring Swayze is 1990's Ghost. It's a really good movie and one that you may've skipped because it's a love story, but it also has supernatural elements, comedy and drama. It was nominated for Best Picture and Whoopi Goldberg won Best Supporting Actress for it. If you could handle and like Dirty Dancing, you should like it, too.

It's so weird that you've missed so many great movies whilst knowing so much about certain aspects of film, but hey, I dig it! I always hated Road House until I rewatched it recently for my podcast and realised how deliciously cheesy it was. Could not stop laughing. One of my life ambitions is to somehow see the Off-Broadway production of Road House, in which Dalton is played by Taimak, star of The Last Dragon, in a blond mullet. Sam Elliot is great in "Mask", with Cher, and a lot of people like "Shakedown", in which he co-stars with Peter Weller from Robocop. I used to enjoy him in "Fatal Beauty", in which he's sidekick to Whoopi Goldberg, but a recent revisit did it no favours...

I was like, "Oh the ugly dude with the big nose who was in that movie with the ugly chick with the big nose is in this movie? No thanks". It was the 80s I was a teenager what the hell you want from me? Anyway I ended up going to see it and was savagely entertained. The entire premise is so stupid but its just so beautifully executed you can't help but love it. Some people call it a guilty pleasure. I disagree. It's just a pleasure, there is no reason to ever feel guilt over enjoying something so awesome.

A movie that I will always consider a favorite thriller. Action, suspense, sexy and yet comedic at times. Glad you had a fun time too ^^ There are takeaways from this movie that I still employ in my real life ☮ (no, not the throat-ripping 😝)

1. This was my first Patrick Swazye movie and I've seen as many of his other films as I could. RIP Pat😇 2. He started doing ballet but injured his knee so he took up acting. Ghost, The Outsiders, Dirty Dancing and Red Dawn would be good starts for more of him. 3. Who doesn't love Sam Elliot? 4. This didn't get the love it deserved. It has now become classic. 5. This holds the claimed title "The best bad movie ever. I disagree. I love it.😁

I'm sorry Jay but Dalton did the throat rip before MacGruber. "I believe" MacGruber idolized Dalton and is paying homage to him. MacGruber does a "Dalton" when he rips throats out. LOL Don't get me wrong, I love MacGruber. Keep up the great reactions.

Thanks! And yeah, I know MacGruber didn't come out till like 30 years after this. 😂 Can I just say, when I read Dalton in this comment read it like that waitress. 😂

You are hilarious!! Your facial expressions and commentary are great!! I remember my parents watching this movie but not being allowed to see it, I mean I can sort of tell why. It was one I missed out on seeing too. Totally random, you weren't far off with the Dirty Dancing thing, because the song that was playing when Dalton and the Doctor slept together was literally the same song from Dirty Dancing before Johnny and Baby slept together!! Sort of random recommendation, my mom loves Sam Elliot, she had me watch Fatal Beauty with him and Whoopi Goldberg, definitely an interesting watch!

It's called Roadhouse because that's what those type of clubs next to the roads in rural areas were/are called. Its such a great movie you should watch Patrick Swayze star next to Keanu Reeves in Point Break. It's a brilliant action movie which I think you will really luv.

If Chuck Norris played a similar but different character role than Patrick Swayze's in Road House, Brad Wesley and his goons are gonna be afraid of him because of who he is and what he is capable of before he was a bouncer, beating the hell of them and leaving them broken and terrified.

Another great Sam Elliott film is Mask with Cher. It's based on a true story and is an excellent film. Not sure if you've seen The Outsiders yet but it's a fantastic classic 80's movie. Stars Patrick, Ralph Machio, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane and my teenage crush Matt Dillon. I hadn't seen this movie in awhile, great reaction.
