As a former pro cyclist who was very weight conscious I learned that reps with weights induce hypertrophy (increase size). You can get incredibly strong and increase endurance without adding mass with weights, but you have to lift as much as you possibly can until failure-very high weights, low reps, to fail. The way you’re squatting, for instance, makes your body want to add mass, which you’re probably trying to keep off by dieting (depleting yourself). I know we think big muscles mean more strength, but that simply is not always true. Look at the skinny, little Olympic clean and snatch lifters-they’ll lift 3X’s their own weight. If you’re thinking of cyclists with giant quads you’ve got the wrong guys. Those are sprinters-but even modern sprinters are getting skinnier. For an illustration of the power to weight I’m talking about have a look at the Tour de France winners. They’re skinny dudes with incredible power and endurance in their legs. A boxer needs that, but whole body. Much of this research has come out of England in the last ten years so many strength trainers in other disciplines are unaware of it. Great series.
