Ahead of the Vilnius Summit, the NATO Contact Point Embassies of Germany and Portugal, the Atlantic Council’s Northern Europe Office and the Lithuanian Embassy hosted a Pre-NATO Summit in Stockholm on May 11.
The pre-summit brought together representatives from Sweden, Finland and NATO Allies to discuss Swedish and Finnish contributions to NATO, goals for Vilnius, and possible outcomes of the summit.
After introductory words by the German Ambassador to Sweden, Dr. Joachim Bertele, the Swedish and the Finnish Ministers of Foreign Affairs - Tobias Billström and Pekka Haavisto - opened the summit, followed by keynote speeches from the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs - Gabrielius Landsbergis and NATO Deputy Assistant Secreary General for Defence Policy and Planning - Major General Jörg See.
A panel discussion, “Entering a New Era of Strengthening Euro-Atlantic Security: Sweden & Finland in NATO,” followed, featuring the Swedish Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Michael Claesson, NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning, Major General Jörg See, and Deputy Head of Department for European Security Policy, Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ditte Egnell.
The discussion was moderated by Anna Wieslander, Northern Europe Director at the Atlantic Council.
