I visited friends in Abu Dhabi and Dubai a number of years ago and to see the shots of the desert brought back memories and then, when you were walking around exactly where I had been, that was incredible. Keep these coming. I will be in Dubai in two weeks' time. I was recently in Bahrain and it wasn't what I expected. There is such a depth and richness in the Middle East and a serene kindness in the people, it is a great shame that the politics is so volatile. On the subject of deserts, when I was based in California I loved the Mojave Desert. Coming from New Zealand I expected lots of nothingness but every step you take in a desert is an eye opening experience full of pleasant surprises.

In those places, well a little bit south, in Socotra Island, my favorite plant is growing, the Dracaena Cinnabari. Almost endangered plant. I've tried to raise one here, a couple of years ago, but it died because it was too hot in the night. Crazy but true. I'll probably try again in a near future. I like it so much.
