Ciao! This time I filmed in a beautiful historic café in Florence, Italy. The experience of ordering coffee in Italy is not for the easily intimidated. This episode I share with you all my tips for living the Italian bar or cafe like a local. I have included both beginner and advanced Italian lessons and hopefully there will be something useful for everyone seeking a free online Italian lesson. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:
/ kylieflavell
You can find my recipes and other information on moving to Italy, learning Italian or my filmmaking equipment on my website:

Please don't follow me on Facebook as that person is not me - they have stolen my identity for the past few years. You can follow me over on Instagram for daily inspiration from Italy and around the world to make you dream, learn a language, cook, travel, move to a foreign country, film, edit or pursue your passion:

When I was in Florence I stopped on my way to class at one of the bars you filmed in, and a bird wandered in and just hung out on the floor in front of the bar for a while. Little things like that that wouldn’t happen in America are so chill in other places.

By law there are 2 ways to pay for food and drink in Italy. Pay first, get your receipt and then ask for what you paid for or ask for something, get served and then pay for it. The former method is customary in very busy places where you want to make sure everyone has paid and it would be impractical or difficult to implement the other system. An example of this system is what happens when you stop at an Autogrill in Italy. The latter system is pretty common in places that are not as busy which means most places outside big cities, train stations and the like. Hope this explanation helps clarify the matter.

Cara Kylie. Over the years, I've had this dream of becoming a language teacher, but my confidence ( or lack of) always gets in the way. This video was a stark reminder of how much fun it is to both learn and teach a language. Words turn into sentences, communication turns into conversation and it's liberating. It is truly joyous to be able to speak a second language and, over time, have that language become part of your soul. This lovely video came at precisely the right time. Thank you for reminding me of that dream.

This is amazing. I will never forget when I was in high school 10 years ago and went to Italy. I was in Florence and going into a coffee shop was crazy! There was a rush of people and somehow you order, pay, and then get the drink. It was very different. They saw some of my friends as Americans and almost right away ignored them so it got to the point where I had to order in Spanish and they took that way better than speaking English. Soon I hope to go back!

The coffee experience is definitely one of my favourite things about Italy. I was blown away that, even at gas station along the highway, there was still a full coffee bar with the same quality you'd expect in Rome or Florence. And you're right Kylie, manners go very far in building rapport. When I stayed in Rome a few years ago, my closest bar was a place called Materia. I got my morning caffè there each day and after only three mornings I was already feeling like a regular.

Actually, coffee at the service station along the highway is probably the best, as they literally make thousands a day, and the more they make the better it gets. Also, as they are open 24/7 they get the cornetti fresh out of the oven from the bakery. Yum!

In Italy it's not just the coffee, but every little detail and pretty much everything that's usually of the highest quality. If you ask for an orange juice, you don't get something out of a carton made of concentrate, but you watch as the barista squeezes real oranges then and there (which is why one should not ask for spremuta d'arancia in the summer, seeing as oranges are out of season then).

I’m actually impressed with this video, very well done, so kudos to ms Flavell, really. That said you did a small mistake about the water served with coffee. First of all it’s not just a Roman thing. It’s a way to serve coffee which is pretty high standard although the practice has become more common. The water is served with the coffee to allow the patron to wash his mouth and enjoy the full flavor of the coffee better. So you drink the water first and then you drink your coffee. Doing the opposite means you did not enjoy your coffee, the taste was foul and you need to wash it away. Also a funny thing about service costs in Italy (“coperto”): you can get in very classy and costly places and pay very little without sitting down. I remember fondly of the time I was a university student and with my friends we used to get into one of the most exclusive places in Padua having our coffee at the counter (“al banco”). That way you could only be charged for the product which was the standard price (the equivalent of 0.50 euros today) had we sat down the amount for the service would have been 20 times as much. In places like Venice this becomes even more ridiculous.

A caffè americano is sometimes also an instant coffee. I believe they call it also caffè lungo (long coffee). Not sure though if it's the same. About the pronunciation, when there are two letters of the same kind together, put the emphasis on those, like pizza, not piza. Not finished watching the video yet, but un affogato di caffè is ice cream with an expresso, really nice.

This is excellent advice and quite inspirational ! I came across Kylie's channel a couple of weeks ago as I am currently learning Italian and I have found the videos more than helpful - what a pity I did not discover the channel earlier. An really high quality standard of presentation and audio which makes such a hugely refreshing change to some of the other material which is often posted. Thank you Kylie and keep up the fantastic work!!!

Hi Kylie, I also believe in manners and I was raised to have them given that my parents were from a more polite, traditional society in many respects than modern day USA, (their childhood=1940-s-1950's Uruguay/ Argentina). Living in the USA today means that you need to be wary of polite manners in public as people can see you as strange/ weird. Society here is much less formal or polite than in Europe. I think that the polite, more formal nature in Italy is one of the characteristics that make Italy beautiful. Example: when I was a kid at the dinner table here in the USA, my father would always correct me when I would say, after being offered seconds, "No thanks, I'm full." He would say: "Don't be barbaric, you're not a car getting its gas tank filled at the gas station. Se dice/ you say: No thankyou, I'm satisfied." Kylie, you are very good at this, I think that you should offer lessons in common Italian exchanges that an English-speaking foreigner might encounter in Italy, perhaps through Patreon.

Kylie really enjoyed your video which I stumbled on by accident, I worked all over Italy for a number of years. Totally fell in love with Italy and it’s people from the first visit, and believe me I have seen the good and bad of both as a resident. I made a conscious effort to learn to understand the language as best as I could at the time, and your comments around trying to understand even one word in a sentence to build on in the next encounter are so true, It’s amazing what you can do with such limited vocabulary, a good intent and as you point out good manners and politeness. The general level of civility in everyday transactions is just wonderful and I have witnessed the evident disappointment when tourists don’t understand the “norms” of behaviour expected. I often now watch Recipe videos in Italian and can only sometimes think of Italian words for items, Might start to watch your videos and get back into learning everyday Italian again such a pretty language.

I just wanted to drop in and say….I put your Italian learning videos on repeat two months before my first trip to Italy to see family I hadn’t met yet with my mother. 😅 This along with the other studies helped SO MUCH. These videos truly prepare you for everyday instead of the junk the apps and other lessons teach you. I had to speak for both my mother and I the whole trip. I had NO trouble asking for directions, taking the train, taxi, ordering and general conversation. In fact I was complimented the whole trip on my Italian. THANK YOU!!

Oooh I would love a video on manners and what to say, how to say - great idea Kylie, love your work - and yes, I was thinking the other day about how society is fast becoming cheap... The other day mum got a phone number written by an elderly lady's husband, mum was overwhelmed by how beautifully the numbers were written... we're losing the old ways and you're restoring them, thank you!x

Loved this video. Years ago I had a very educated lesson where I asked for a coffee....and got an espresso. As a South African we just call filter coffee, coffee. I must admit, it was a really delicious mistake. I now love espresso.
