Dandelion and Burdock is a really old fashioned fizzy drink which has made a bit of a come back in recent years (similar to the trend for ales and ipa's. the old is the new and everything is repackaged as artisan, case in point being look at all the different types of gin they have when you visit the pub) i suspect the closest thing you have in the states is sarsaparilla and the burdock is a plant which gives the drink "that" flavour. not sure about the dandelion bit as these are the small yellow flowers you usually see in grass lawns (but they might also be used to flavour it or maybe just part of the original name not sure about that ) other canned drinks to look out for are ginger beer (usually non-alcoholic) vimto (northern england) irn brew (scotland) which are sold all over and are unique to the UK. chin-chin

I've come to the conclusion that when people taste a drink that they have never tried before, don't like and don't know hot to describe, 9 times out of 10 they say it tastes like cough medicine.

So little story, there's a reason why the services you stopped at is in the woods. That's Fleet services which actually burned down not that long ago because the I think Burger King? had a fire. So they have this temporary building which is back behind where the services used to be at, and that's why its a little way back behind that path. Its still one of the nicer services though the fir trees around it make for a nice scenic break from the Motorway.
@EricIrl6 жыл бұрын
And me. Because it's only a few miles away, I rarely use it. It was a big news story when the service area burned down. Amazing you didn't get stuck ina traffic jam at Stonehenge. Every time I go down that road I get caught out. I love the A303 though.

So glad Alison managed to get her passport sorted - what a nightmare, but the Embassy obviously came through. D&B is the best drink......period! Original recipe dates back to the middle ages. No dandelions or burdocks are harmed in present production of this gorgeous drink ;) Another drink which is worth trying (in my own opinion, others may disagree) is Vimto - fruit based drink, berries, cherries, that sort of stuff. It is sugary, but you can find low calorie versions of it. Get it in a can if you can (sorry no pun intended) or you can get concentrate that you mix up with water. Have fun but you gotta watch out for sheep on those foggy roads, its the warmer than the grass so the sheep love sleeping on a dark, foggy road.

I'm so glad you were able to replace your passport. One of my students lost her passport in Madrid, and we were able to replace it in a day. While we waited, we were able to go shopping and out to lunch. Not bad for a day in Madrid! An old English belief/saying is that if you pick (snap off) a dandelion....you will wee the bed lol.
@paulknox9997 жыл бұрын
Dandelion and burdock are both plants/weeds. you will see dandelions growing all over the place bright yellow flowers that eventually turn to wife fluffy balls when they go to seed. Burdock is a plant that has long been used in many medicines so could well be why you recognise the taste as cough mixture. So keep drinking it as it will do you good and tastes delicious especially the fentimans as this will contain actual plant extract some of the cheaper versions will just be chemical flavourings
@MK-ex4pb7 жыл бұрын
Paul K Americans know what dandelions are because unfortunately they were introduced to the US as an ornament plant or medicinal, and they are easy to escape from a pot. And now they cover every one of our lawns in spring. Not to mention enterprising children love to blow the white puffs. Now we j just need to get burdock...
@paulknox9997 жыл бұрын
dandelions also a big weed problem in UK. we also use them as a clock, ie blow white seed puffs and count how many puffs until all gone and that's the time.... of course us adults fix it to always be the correct number of puffs to impress the kids. Also makes great tea. You may know Burdock as Arctium pretty sure it grows in north America.
@Theendlessadventure7 жыл бұрын
We definitely grew up with dandelions in the yard (my mom now picks them for her bunnies lol), but had no idea you could eat/drink them. It's probably a little too medicine-y for us to drink regularly, but we're glad we tried it :) - Allison

Our passports were stolen in Rome and the embassy there was fantastic to us. They even looked up the train schedule since we were on our way to Florence when it happened. Overall, it was a unique experience and fell on our wedding anniversary. Be prepared when returning to the states that if using the kiosks at border control, you'll be directed to the desk. They immediately knew we had replacement passports and again were very nice about it. Just all part of the adventure.

Back in 1995, I went to Austria and Germany with my mom and brother. My mom lost her passport, and like you, we had to make an emergency trip to the US Embassy (in Hamburg for us). We were staying with some German friends, so they did the very fast driving on the Autobahn for us. The crazy thing was we were going to the embassy on a Saturday.....on 4th of July weekend. They close at noon, but they were waiting for us as we got caught in road construction. I had to go with my mom as I was the only American citizen of adult status that could verify my mom's identity. The scarier part was the number of times we had to pass through the metal detectors before we could meet with embassy staff. I wonder what security is like now, 22 years later.

Welcome back guys, always an interesting perspective when people visit the UK. Everyday things we take for granted suddenly become much bigger for you. Dandelion & Burdock is an age old drink. Yeah definitely try vimto and irn-bru when you get the opportunity, just for fun. Hope you enjoy some fish and chips by the seaside :) weirdest thing about the UK imo is how accents can drastically change after a 3 mile drive! What intrigues me most is how "foreigners" feel in the UK, like what does it feel like being here. That's the most interesting thing for me. I doubt it feels like you're in Europe in the same way that travelling through France or Poland does
