I was able to get the dash all buttoned up and ready to 3d scan so I can make a new piece and have it wrapped in leather.

I still think this custom dash is the most technical and seemingly impossible task on KZbin. This is crazy. Nothing I would attempt. I know you can do it, so I'm excited to watch this progress.

Also, I have doubts that the bondo will hold up with the flexing of the dash. I can see it breaking loose and cracking. I hope i am wrong.

I've been watching this from the get go. I love that you never let any obstacles get in your way and didn't go the cheap way. There are a lot of people just adding a front and a motor. You are 100% going from scratch. Absolutely love this. Thankyou for going through all the frustration headache and I'm sure split knuckles to build a beautiful original 1 of 1 actual hellcat magnum.

Dave, you should make the dash like a cover, with separate internal skeleton sections , that would unable you to use and bolt on all those different original individual pieces without having to cut them for replacement. The dash looks nice

Wow! Ambitious project! I think I would have fabbed up a pallet-like platform to hold up the bulkhead assembly, so you can move it out of your way via a forklift. That way, you won't be stumbling over it in the middle of your shop. Also I think I would have glued some wooden paint stirring sticks onto the dash shell to stabilize the thin dash shell while working with it. I think I would have tried using spray foam and chicken wire to build up and contour the new surface. It would be light and still rigid. Regardless, I like the shape and the new dash configuration, and I can't wait to see it finished.

You're over thinking it. Just take a mold of the out side of the dash to create a cover panel and glue the factory bits you need to the panel with panel bond. You could make it out of carbon or glass fiber or vacu formed plastic.

Hey Dave, that is not an issue wanting everything to be perfect. It's doing the job properly. How often have I seen work done by trades persons that is not up to standard. That's where doing it yourself makes the difference, because you can take the time to get it right.

If you decide on 3D scanning the dash, you’ll need to add some textures and colours to help mesh the scans together. If you scan it the way it is now, it will have trouble aligning the scans. Food for thought.

Can't you hire a scanner operator for an afternoon? That should get you good results without the challenges of trying to source a high end scanner and do the whole thing yourself. Not trying to knock the DIY approach, but it's all about knowing what to hire out. You could probably hire out the whole dash to be made out of composites based on this model, but I expect the cost there would be prohibitive. There's a market for this level of work, but it serves the supercar scene where money is no object. Super stoked to see how you meet this challenge, can't wait to see it in the car!

This is a cool idea...I worry that the more aggressive transition to the right side of the instrument panel pod might be hard to vinyl wrap and have come out with no stretch marks. If there's one thing I've learned about wrapping panels in th last 28 years of doing custom car audio, it's that making your shape easier to wrap goes a LONG way to getting a nice result. Digging how OE+ this is coming out. Nice work.

I do a fair bit of stuff like this in Australia and I can tell you you're doing it the hard and expensive way. Just use cheap plasterboard filler instead, it's a lot cheaper and sands easier. Just do a polyester resin final layer and you can buff that out to smooth as glass perfect for mould making. Anyhow, great progress so far and impressive to see someone on KZbin not cutting every corner.

Was thinking Dave and this is certainly no criticism, maybe try using expanding foam for shaping I’ve used it for model making and seen Dave kindig ( I think ) use it for shaping stuff before moulding . This is a fab job but like you say the weight would maybe an issue I guess 🤔

I think I would have gone with a spray foam and then body filler. You can use a sander on the foam just as easily and it will flex better than inches of filler. Or perhaps something with strength and flexibility like fiberglass... Awesome work though.

A good fiber reinforced casting resin will be MUCH stronger than any of the 3D printable resins. The printable resins are either way too soft and flexible or incredibly brittle. Most of the OEM dashes all use fiber reinforced thermoset plastics of some sort.

So, I get wanting to make this into a complete single piece dash, but why not just produce and print a shell of the top portion and then attach it to a bottom framing and bracing? Maybe I am not seeing the complete dash to understand how that is possible, but I would think if you end up 3D scanning it, it would have a ton of space between the bottom side that meets the frame and the top side that the leather would get mounted to, given that is all just thick body filler. Either way, I am trusting your attention to detail and the process by which in you intend to approach this, I can't help just think this could be interesting to make in to multiple pieces and then have them all fit together and retain some of the harder print pieces like the bottom side with the mounts and etc...

Wouldn't a resin cast dash weigh like 100 lbs? If I were to make a 3D printed mold, I would make a compression mold, that squeezes chopped up carbon fiber and resin together. It would be incredibly strong, and super light. You would only need to design flanges that accept, like, a million bolts. Are you keeping the passenger airbag?
