The plastic shield is also because the drums can set up a resonance inside the bodies of hollow instruments. If placed wrong or not shielded it will change the sound of the orchestra instruments. A sound engineer commented about this on a Within Temptation (Black Symphony) concert where they also have a full orchestra and choir.
@cyberjarl4 жыл бұрын
You mentioned the connection between Floor and Simone, as well as Floor and Mark (both were in After Forever) but the connection doesn't end there. Simone is married to Oliver Polotai, the keyboards player of another metal band : Kamelot (in fact she was pregnant during this show which is why she didn't headbang as violently as Floor did xD ) . Very early Epica (then named Sahara Dust) was in fact Kamelot's support band during their Epica tour (from their namesake album), and it is from Kamelot's Epica album title that the name of the band comes from. Kamelot was the support band during Nightwish's 2012 Imaginaerum US tour, during which then-Nightwish-vocalist Anette Olzon fell ill minutes before their Denver show. Kamelot's session vocalists Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz covered for Anette and the show went on while she was hospitalized. Nightwish's decision to go forward with the show upset Anette and she publicly criticized the band on her blog. This was the last straw in Anette's and Nightwish's already troubled relationship and days later, the band fired her, with Floor acting as her replacement for the remainder of the tour. We know the rest of the story. Elize Ryd was also considered by Nightwish as a vocalist - way back in 2005 when they fired their first vocalist, Tarja Turunen. They thought Elize was too young and inexperienced at the time and went with Anette instead. Elize went on to found her own band, Amaranthe. Unrelated to this, on their first album with Anette, Nightwish released a song titled Amaranth. Is your heads spinning yet? XD

I remember watching this for the first time live on my laptop! It was my first ever livestreamed show and if I remember correctly it was 5€ to see the stream. I've done a lot of these this year, but in 2013 it was not the norm! Since it was their 10th anniversary, they wanted to include as much fans as possible and managed to get their show streamed! Simone was in the early stages of her pregnancy here, they made it public a few weeks after this show. Floor wasn't the only guest, former band members Yves Huts (bass), Jeroen Simons (Drums) and Ad Sluijter (Guitar) joined the band on stage for the song Quietus, replacing the current members just for that song.

This is the moment when acoustic guitars are brought to a fixed base. To play the song design your universe. At the beginning of the song, both guitarists start with acoustic guitars and then quickly switch to the electric guitars they put around their necks. This concert belongs to 2013. Simone is three months pregnant at this concert. And one of the best epica concerts. In the 39th minute of the concert, one of the violinists comes to isaac and they start playing the presto song, which of course the orchestra accompanies them in the background, which is wonderful. This concert is worth seeing in full.

I also have heard Floor helped Simone with vocal training, but like Henk Poort and Floor have discussed, even this far along in a career you really can use a trainer or someone to work with, to stay atop your game. Henk is 64 I think, and he still works with a coach (who helped him learn distortion for singing to Floor)

Like the one about Mark Jansen leaving AF because of Simone... Here's the thing: they're all just good friends! Mark and Floor started After Forever together with Sander Gommans and other dutch musicians in the late 90's. After their second full lenght Mark left for creative differences and if I remember correctly it was not exactly amicable (Epica's song 'Run For A Fall' is said to be about how Mark felt at the time). But they made their peace years later and Floor has been a recurrent guest for both Epica and Mayan (Mark's side project) and in that meantime she became good friends with Simone as well. That's it. :)

Thank you for more Epica! Very good live, if you get the opportunity GO! One of these days you need to react to Therion, arguably considered the founding fathers of Symphonic Metal. They where releasing albums with this sound back in the mid 90's with symphony, choir, and operatic vocals. Unfortunately not many live shows exist in good quality. Plus most studio tracks the songs contain only operatic vocals, so live shows sound completely different. Defiantly something that warrants a live vs studio comparison in the review. Therion's sound is not for everyone and each album's concept can vary the symphonic element. Please put this band on your radar as they play a role in the history of Symphonic Metal. Best albums in my opinion release from 1995-2007, they changed the sound a bit after that and many fans dropped off. A new album is coming out and the track released has the classic sound so they may be returning to their older style. The 2007 tour probably has the best quality recordings online. Just remember the live show will sound VERY different from the album. I know you prefer live shows, but IMO to truly appreciate Therion the studio recordings should be included in any review. Some personal favorites: Cults of the Shadow - Theli, Rise Of Sodom And Gomorrah - Vovin, Via Nocturna - Deggial, Ginnungagap - Secret of the Runes, An Arrow From The Sun - Lemuria

The acoustic guitar at the end was probably for Design Your Universe, another amazing song by Epica. And yes, the reaction you did for Poet and the Pendulum was Wembley. And speaking of Wembley, please, please do The Greatest Show on Earth from Wembley. Tampere is amazing but Wembley is just extra special. I promise you won’t regret it.

It is so nice to see when you discover bands I've been hearing for ten years ore more.

My favorite moment, which no one seems to mention, is the little shimmy Simone does just before the breakdown. She's so cute doing it.

The whole choir really gives this song and other in this live show a big uplift in what singing can do! More choir metal is needed ;) I really have to wonder why Finland does not have huge amouth of heavy metal choirs? :)

Sancta Terra was originally on "Divine Conspiracy" That's the first Epica album I ever listened to. If you run out of Retrospect stuff, their live recording of the "Classical Conspiracy" show in Miskolc (sorry, probably wrote that wrong, I'm terrible at remembering geography related data 🤣) which also has a full choir and orchestra is awesome, too.
